@@kathyflorcruz552 Actually I did hear Lucy bad mouth Desi; but never the reverse. (Not hear about but actually hear her call him a "loser".) Also, everything is blamed on Desi's drinking and womanizing; however, very late before Desi asked for the divorce (he let Lucy be the one to file for it - acting like she asked for it), he said the boozing and womanizing was a way he was unwinding - he said he had too much stress and wanted to sell Desilu productions - Lucy said no. I do feel that she is equally responsible for their difficulties. During the home videos watching him with the children, he was always warm and feelingful. Lucy less so.

@@LJ-ht4zs Lucy DID indeed acknowledge Desi's drinking & womanizing but refused to diminish him as a talent or his contributions to their careers & television. EVERY Holllywood marriage takes hits & compared to what FILTH you see out there now & degeneracy & dragging through the mud & custody battles & baby mama drama etc - how Lucy & Desi handled their situtation in the spotlight was lightyears better than anyone can claim now. In fact the disgusting presence of social media has made it all even that much worse, an activist judges have too. Men ALSO have been ALWAYS raked over the coals in the public eye when it comes to divorce or relationships & child custody & support & alimony REGARDLESS in MOST situations of the behavior of the women. Again - I think Lucy was a taskmaster indeed, took the reigns when she had a company to run, and she HAD found Desi & had children later in life & wanted THAT desperately to work too & worked hard at it & when it failed was still determined to make a success out of it & didn't HAVE to take Desi down in the public eye to do it. I admire her for that. I admire them both for not hating each other & being loving parents for their children & grandchildren the rest of their lives.

Hedda Hopper wrote about her experience appearing in this episode. She noted that Lucy, as the producer. was having trouble with a particular segment- and Desi walked onto the set, offering to help smooth things out. "All right, go ahead and try it!", she snapped. Hedda noted, "In ten minutes, Desi had the revue ticking like a fine clock."

That doesn't surprise me. Desi never really got the credit he deserved when he was alive for his amazing talent. I'm sure part of it was because Lucy was the star, and even today people give the stars all the credit and almost no credit to the people who make everything work behind the scenes. I'm sure part of it was also because of a certain amount of racism. And part of it will also always be how Desi treated Lucy in their personal life. And don't get me wrong, his womanizing and drinking really did hurt his family and his wife in very big ways. But there will always be a part of me that will wonder if Desi had gotten the credit and respect and gratitude he deserved if he ultimately might not have needed the drinking and the women on the side. I don't think Desi even cared that much about the public or industry giving him the credit. I always got the impression the reason he worked so hard was because it was his way of trying to give back to Lucy and show her he loved her and to try to make up for hurting her with the other things that he did. He was a brilliant manager, a formidable businessman, an incredible musician, and an amazing actor. Often the hardest part to play in a comedy is the straight man, and Desi played that part to perfection, while still having perfect timing whenever it was his turn to be funny. None of that takes away from Lucy's genius. She also had incredible instincts on the stage and in business, and when she was forced to step into the role of management she held her own and made some daring decisions that ended up paying off back when the business was dominated by men. But in every area of their professional life, as talented and creative and strong and daring as Lucy was, Desi still outclassed her because he was just that good. And the fact that he never tried to outshine her, but instead was doing it as part of the team to make her look good is even more to his credit. I guess there's just always a part of me that hopes Lucy was able to say to herself at some point, "Desi didn't treat me right, and I was completely justified in protecting myself and getting a divorce. I gave him every chance in the world. But I also know that none of what he did was really personally. He was overwhelmed by his demons and addictions and didn't have the strength to defeat them. But I also know he still cared about me, and the tribute he gave to our love of working so hard to help me in my professional career is noted and appreciated and is quite amazing and quite special."

@@hollybigelow5337 Desi was an addict: booze, womanizing and gambling before he married, during his marriage and after it. His 2nd wife almost divorced him too for the same reasons - also I read somewhere that she also realized that he still loved Lucy. I think Desi loved Lucy and his 2nd wife Edith but he loved his addictions more.

Yes, that is odd, isn't it. What puzzled me is how and WHY Carole Cook ever got anywhere. Her only best known movie role was as "Bessie" in THE INCREDIBLE MR. LIMPET. I never saw what was to "outstanding" about her. While she might have had an interesting voice, her appearance was a bit horrifying. She was surely no threat to Lucille Ball. Even into her 70s, Lucy retained her beauty in a matured fashion. Carole Cooke just grew more grotesque. She might have fared better as a "Character Actress" in dark films, or more specifically horror.

Thanks for posting this, never seen it before. Ironic stuff. The last Christmas for the famous couple together. Right before the new decade is set to start, and the last 'I Love Lucy' episode in 4 months. Watching this I can see why it bombed. The critics opened fire on it, even calling Hedda Hooper a 'hack' for being in it, and that even the 'Lucy' cast couldn't save this monster. Ball was so upset over the reception it received that she dropped plans to develop it into a production and a Broadway show. Robert Osborne, the famous movie historian, was in the group and appeared a great deal in the show. He was a favorite of Ball, as was Carole Cook. Osborne decided to pursue other things in show biz and stopped acting after the show. Cook went on to a fairly decent career, often appearing on Ball's future series and specials None of the others in her group made it in show biz, most fizzed out and a couple only managed to do minor work. Ball's attempt to duplicate the old MGM Actors School, run by Ginger Rogers mom, at Desilu failed big time. After this show she moved onto other things. Her and Arnaz divorced several months later. This was the next to last show they did together.

The genesis of this program is covered at some length in Thomas Mallon's new novel, "Up with the Sun," a novel based on the life and murder or Dick Kallman, one of the bright new stars featured in this program. Mallon spills a lot of gay tea about Lucille Ball, Carole Cook, Kenneth Nelson (Boys in the Band) and many others in the New York theatre scene of the fifties and sixties. Think of it as a more literary version of "Valley of the Dolls."

I'm actually very surprised this wonderful show was even made. Another channel did an in depth look at the final 'Comedy Hour' with Ernie Kovacs that aired in March 1960 but was apparently filmed and in the can the previous August or Sept. Everyone knew it was the last episode and there was a lot of sadness and tears during the filming. It makes me wonder when this Holiday special was filmed. I don't know the air date, but likely mid-later Dec. '59. I wonder if perhaps it wasn't shot the previous spring or early summer.

Do you have it without the colorized logo on the side? Look at Carole Cook, wearing Lucy's dress from the baby show, she gave it to her.

The pioneers of television as we know it today most of the credit should go to Desi Arnaz as well as his then wife Lucy Vivian Vance William Frawley Lucille Ball of course is the legend we have all learned to love and enthusiastically enjoy

There’s definitely a mystery here. It’s 1959. Jedda Hopper looks gorgeous here. However, her adult son William was the White haired private detective Paul Drake in Perry Mason at that same time frame.😮

Wow, through simple Mathematics I have solved my own mystery. In 1959 Hedda was 74 years old. My my, she surely did not look that old.

Marilyn Lovell. She retired from show business in the early 1960's to be the wife of astronaut Jim Lovell (to whom she'd been married since 1952).

The logo is too big. I wonder if being under contract to Desilu inhibited the careers of these young people. Carole Cook is the only familiar one because she made so many appearances on the Lucy Shows.

I'm a huge Lucy fan. Actually cried when she passed away. Never understood her friendship with Need a Hopper though. She was a flaming bigot. Carole Cook was more her style.

I love Lucy too. Have all her episodes on DVD, movies, specials etc. I don't collect The Lucy Show or Here's Lucy because without Desi to handle the business end the shows just got ridiculously stale. Lucy had a workshop to develop new talent and a couple of the students did ok. This special was obviously done to showcase them but turned into 1959's reason why Vaudeville died. As to Desi and Lucy's marriage, relationship and eventual divorce is really nobody's business except theirs. Lucy stated herself she knew what she was getting into when she married Desi. Thanks to tabloid trash and the whore monger media of then and the world today, none of their personal life will ever be left alone. Damn shame. Desi and Lucy, I Love You.

Well, it WAS only on the cheek; this may have been after they shot the last hour-long show, and they knew they'd never see (or, at least act together) each other again.

You know they ARE actors....Constant money flow from the Actors Guild makes you do things to people you wouldn't want to do normally, perhaps repulsed to do... Like when Mike and Carol Brady kissed...

It’s not ‘I Love Lucy’ but it has all the ingredients--notably the Ball/Arnaz/Vance/Frawley dynamic and Lucy doing her dizzy-redhead schtick as she darts about while the big show is put together. Many I/❤/L fans will like this trip back, in glorious black & white. And to whoever thought it was a good idea to leave the garish little full-color headshot of Lucy in the lower left corner: it wasn’t. It distracts attention from the entire show.)

Lucy was THE person responsible for both STAR TREK and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE to appear on TV; it was essentially her "say" since she owned DESILU by then.

This is better than most of the Lucy-Desi comedy hour specials. They should have opted for this format instead. To be clear, this special is not outstanding by any stretch; but it’s better than sitting through an hour of very forced comedy.
