Mr. Dale, I started turkey hunting at about 19 years old. My family are all deer hunters. Your educational videos have taught me so much over the years. I’m 26 now and I can’t tell you how many birds I’ve stood over thinking, “thank you Matt Dale.” I killed my 3rd gobbler this year in Alabama using the whine as a matter of fact. Thank you for what you do and keep the tips coming.

Matt a few years ago I walked up to my listening spot on a farm I hunt at about 11:30 am and soon as I got there I heard a hen. I got set up by a big beech tree and man she was all around me and I had never heard anything like it. She would moan is the best way I can describe it. So much so that I named her Mona. She went on for quite a while and now and then I would call lightly and she would start up again. She left finally or so I thought and then I saw a head coming up over the bank and thought it was her. Then I realized it was a red head. Big Tom came in silent and I rolled him. The very next morning I was there before daylight at the same beech tree set up and up the pipe line above me she started up. It was Mona !!! A gobbler started hammering and after just a few soft calls from me and moans from Mona she dragged him right down to me. Big Tom number 2 rolled him at 10 yards. I told my brother about Mona and let him listen to her on my phone and the very next morning he and I set up at the beech. Mona started up again and Big Tom number 3 started hammering at about 100 yards across the little hollow. This time I guess Mona was tired of getting her boyfriends killed so she walked right past us and went to the Tom. I have killed a truck load of turkey since 1996 when I killed my first one but that was the most insane thing I’ve ever heard a hen do. Needless to say I have mastered the moan and use it often.

As a Tennessee resident and hunter I stop hunting turkey do to the falling population of turkey.. the failing turkey population is due to the poor management practices of TWRA and the TWRA officers who fail to do their jobs.. the call you are making is related to feeding and close social calls and breeding purposes.

As far as calling goes, in general, can you really over call???? I try to sound like multiple hens. Turkeys seem to talk, in one way or another, constantly. Especially if there are multiple birds together. One is bound to be talking.
