The Whisky Ghost Story Of The Imperial Distillery

Have you ever met a ghost? What about a Ghost Distillery? It's Halloween so why not indulge in a ghost story. Today I want to tell you about the story of the Imperial Single Malt Scotch Distillery, perhaps the most ill timed and unlucky Scotch distillery that ever existed. It's a fascinating history fraught with closures and Imperial just missing its moment to shine. When it came, it was too late and Imperial had been knocked down, laid to waste, only haunting us in bottles like this one as a ghost distillery bottling. This Imperial 1998 22 year old Single Malt Scotch Whisky was bottled by the Independent Bottler "Single Malts of Scotland" for what is most likely Canada's best whisky shop, the Kensington Wine Market in Calgary, Alberta. Drawn from an Ex Bourbon cask it was bottled at 54.1% Thanks as always for watching, I hope you enjoy this Halloween trick. Or is it a treat? Cheers.

Nice creepy video Matt. I’ve tried a couple of Imperial and really enjoyed them especially the SMoS bottlings.

I'm sitting here going, "I know I have an Imperial tucked away somewhere. WTF is it?" XD Had to do some digging - I picked up the SMWS bottle 65.7 Timeless and Magnificent, 30yo Imperial. A little birdy got in my ear and told me to get in on this one, and despite SMWS pricing, I picked it up blind. As you can imagine it's buried DEEP in my SMWS bottles for that moment when I either "beat the charges" or "the biopsies came back clean". XD

I'm glad to hear that you've got that SMWS Imperial tucked away somewhere in whisky mountain, err, I mean, your stash :p Leave it buried deep in the Mines of Moria in whisky mountain until the jury finds you not guilty. I opened this one, but it was partly because I splurged on a backup for the future. Probably why I live off ramen now. Oh well, worth it. Cheers Hex 🥃

I've only ever had Caperdonich as well but Rosebank and Brora are on my list which I know both of them are mothballed rather than ghost but still :)in terms of ghost Banff has always intrigued me. Banff would be such a cool distillery to try! A heavily peated mainland distillery from that Era sounds pretty epic! I'm suspicious that the reopening of Rosebank, Broadway, and Port Ellen isn't for enthusiasts like us. Sounds like they belive they'll cash in big on the reputations and prices they garnered once they closed. Personally it would be awesome to try pre closure Brora or Port Ellen. Hope you find your Banff one day Sertug! Cheers buddy 🥃

Yeah when I said Port Ellen and Brora I did mean pre-closure because I completely agree with you in terms of cashing out on the name and reputation for the new comers. Dude literally 3 days after I commented on this at a highly unlikely bar I came across a 1971 36 year old Banff, 1977 30 year old Inverleven and 1980 26 year old Dallas Dhu, all cask strength single casks! Needless to say I've tried all three and a big joy was had by me! So thank you for hoping this for me, I have found it :) @@whiskyonthewestcoast

Very cool video, Matt...yep tried a lot of "ghost" distilleries as you say, but don't wanna come across as "showing off' here naming "this" & "that" closed distillery (you already have an idea about it), even if I haven't tried all of them...Imperial ? yes... Btw, this video is the evidence that you can do great even with almost no editing (except the music) ! Cheers !

Thanks Greg! It was fun to try something a little more dramatic with this video. Good for a change I suppose. Sorry about getting to this late. These things get away from me. I can count the number of closed distilleries I've had on only one hand but I have a feeling you may have seen the golden Era of closed distillery bottlings.
