It was a frequent site at the White Stripes concerts to see Jack White introduce his bandmate as “big sister Meg.” The White Stripes formed in the late 90’s at a time when Rock N’ Roll was kind of in a weird spot. The dust had settled on the alternative rock movement of the early 90’s and while there still were bands on the charts from that era, it was a far cry from their heyday. Most of the popular rock songs of the time were considered pop-rock and what some would call post-grunge. The White Stripes seemed like a breath of fresh air while also being a throwback. A band that paid homage to the blues. The White Stripes would go on to heavily influence the revival of garage rock in the late 90’s and the early 2000’s with band’s like the the Black Keys and the Strokes following in their footsteps.
But from day one Jack and Meg concocted a story that they were brother and sister, despite the fact that they were married. So how did they get exposed out and why did they come up with this idea in the first place? Stay tuned to find out.
Hailing from Detroit, Jack White was originally born John Gillis. As a teenager he attended a mostly ethnically mixed school. Hip hop was popular with the kids at the school he attended, but Jack didn’t count himself a fan, instead focusing on mastering the guitar as his influences included Led Zeppelin, Captain Beefheart, Pink Floyd, The Doors and countless old time blues musicians, Obviously he became the odd man out at school. And music wasn’t Jack’s first calling in life as he would reveal to Rolling Stone, that he initially had several ideas of what he wanted to do after graduating including entering the priesthood and possibly joining the marines
There was one moment though in White’s life that he can vividly remember that turned him onto the Blues. It would be a 1993 Radiohead Gig when he heard Son House’s John The Revelator played as the intro music, and it was something caught his attention. Eventually getting his hands on a copy of Son house’s House of the Father Of Folk Blues LP from 1965, the stripped down, yet effective sound caught Jack’s ear. He would reveal in the film ‘It Might Get loud’ with Jimmy Page and U2’s the Edge
“I didn’t know you could do that, just singing and clapping,” “It meant everything. I heard everything disappearing.”
“It was as if someone, with a single blow of the axe, had opened up the world to me… After that, my life received meaning.” Soon afterwards, Jack started to pick up other blues albums. And Apart from playing guitar, he also played drums and was into poetry. .He would also attend open mic nights at a local restaurant called Memphis Smoke, where he met future bandmate and wife Meg White who worked there as a waitress. The two hit it off immediately and began dating getting eventually married on September 21, 1996. John Gillis became Jack White taking Meg's last name.
Then on Bastille Day in 1997, everything changed. Meg White sat down and played drums for the first time on Jack’s kit. White would tell Rolling Stone in 2008
"When she started to play drums with me, just on a lark, it felt liberating and refreshing. There was something in it that opened me up" he'd remember.
Soon afterwards the pair formed a band and threw around a few names to call themselves including Bazooka and Soda Power. Thankfully, the band choose the White Stripes due ot the fact there last name was White and that Meg loved peppermints.After they formed the band, the two concocted a story of them being brother and sister, but why go through all this trouble of doing that. Well White would tell Rolling Stone in 2005 that the lie forced people to take them more seriously
"If we had presented ourselves in another fashion… how would we have been perceived, right off the bat? When you see a band that is two pieces, husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend, you think, 'Oh, I see…
"When they're brother and sister, you go: 'Oh, that's interesting.' You care more about the music, not the relationship." he'd say.

Not as much as you think. Most high schoolers, myself included, get a Military recruit talk during Career Fair time. Many people join just for the stability and leaving toxic family enviroments. Crazy thing is I'm a musician, I was in the Marines and I have my ministry license. All three were dreams I accomplished. I wanted to be a pro baseball player too, but I never kept up with it, even though I was a power hitter. I also wanted to be a pro wrestler, I did accomplish that but now I just do stuff backstage. My uncle owns a indie promo called SWO, Susquehanna Wrestling Organization. I grew up in the business and trained in it. I did wrestle for him a little bit but joined the Marines and that ended my wrestling days. It's all odd yes, but I get him on that. So if you have dreams, yes even multiple dreams work for them and go after them. Even despite how drastically different they are from each other, go after them.

Everyone in Detroit knew both Meg and Jack were not siblings. This was pretty much a known thing anywhere around town...in fact I used to work with Meg at Memphis Smoke BBQ in Royal Oak in the early 2000's when she was a daytime bartender. She was describing to me the concept of the White Stripes at that time. Jack had been with some other bands before that, and was starting the White Stripes project. She's really, really, nice and was a fairly low key personality. Never expected them to blow up the way they did, but good for them.👍

Was wondering if there was some reasoning for saying that, but to say they're siblings, when they're actually married/divorced, to avoid, "gossip," seems like bullshit. That story, and the reality, only creates the gossip in the minds of people who are interested in, and even obsessed with, celebrity nonsense. The only reason I watched was I remember my friend's roommate saying they're married AND siblings back then.

My favorite interview of them is when Jack says he achieved everything he ever wanted with the song "seven nation army" and when he explained how he doesn't care about the fact that common people can't remember the title of the song but everyone knows the "dum de de de dom" rhythm and he's thrilled about the fact that people in sport events are all singing it out loud. I believe it shows his true character. I liked the band but I found him quirky. After that interview I was like: He's a musician, an artist and humble (!) in a way that he doesn't care about the song title but is happy that they gave the world a timeless rhythm that a whole generation knows and can repeat. 💚🎶 I don't expect more from an artist, he's right about it. They achieved already everything and he's grateful about it. Nice. And their private life can be private as long as he doesn't beat his girlfriend to death like the singer of noir desir or molested like R Kelly. Those types of stories are shocking! The rest is just usual show business. Let them live.
@Spect3r.
@Spect3r. 2 жыл бұрын
And if you ever saw them live you can totally understand why. I have been to hundreds of shows, and I'm not even that much of a White Stripes fan, and I can tell you that very few things can compare to "Seven nation army" being played live. The energy in the crowd when the "dum de de de dom" starts is out of this world.

It wasn’t really lies , it was more that they were having fun exploiting the media and the general public as well. The Sex Pistols used to invite media to their shows but then NOT ALLOW THEM IN TO THEIR SHOWS. That way, the media had to rely on what the fans were saying, to write their stories or speak to their bosses. I do appreciate that you used the same trick to sell this YT video, by writing the title that you did .❤️

Seven Nation Army is a bootlegged song like so very many are throughout the entire music business. Many artists are lying to the fans about the true origins of the songs that made them successful. White Stripes are involved with a bootleg recording conspiracy that is so huge that no one will believe the truth when revealed. Simply put, Kurt Cobain didn't write Smells Like Teen Spirit, and he hated the song because the song is about the conspiracy ripping off Teen Spirit as it being created. This illegal copyright conspiracy scheme just gets worse with each artist and song revealed. Taylor Swift didn't write many of her songs as she claims. Even George Harrison didn't write Handle Me With Care. Tom Petty did not write Eddie Rocker, Last Dance With Mary Jane, or any Traveling Wilburys song. Even Dylan did not write the song. Congratulations. Dave Ghrol is involved with Foo Fighters songs many he didn't write. Trent Reznor didn't write Hurt. The conspiracy is real, so they are all lying about the songs. The fact is that the songs are all created by one underground guitarist.

Staged persona that's hilarious. People can call it whatever they want but in the end it's still a lie. The two of them will only know the real reason of why they did it because like this video proved they just keep lying. I personally don't care if they're brother and sister or divorced other than the fact if people saw them making out it would be incest if they were related. It's pretty much BS anyways because there was no good reason to lie about it to begin with because if you become simi famous or full on rock legends the media is going to follow you, investigate you or stalk you for any little bit of info or picture they can get. That's what makes this lie so stupid. Either you like their music or you don't. Either you like them personally or you don't and neither are wrong how "you" feel. Personally I think it's stupid to make a lie up this big and then try to fight it once it's uncovered and continue the lie. Tired of people making excuses for all the BS they do and if you're caught just own it. It's ridiculous and if people like you or your music they'll still buy or go to your show.

I thought the whole reason they were claiming they were siblings is that as a married couple everything sort of had a ticking clock to it of when was this whole thing going to implode? Nah, dude. Back in 1997-1998 all they played on the radio was Korn, Limp Bizkit, and the other douche-rock bands. I was big into Modest Mouse and Built To Spill at the time and they weren't on anybody's radar back then. White Blood Cells and Destijl got more people listening to "rock" music and I think the indie explosion of the 2000s does owe a lot to Jack and Meg.

Don Gately grunge was indie. Radio head, blur, oasis, the verve, smashing pumpkins, all that retro guitar stuff was indie. @dongately2817

@Natmanprime!! ! - Yeah that's true but grunge pretty much died out after 1994. Radiohead is basically the Beatles of Gen X. The Brit pop thing was dying by 96-97. Music that got radio airplay was getting pretty bad (a friend of mine called every band on the radio Matchbox 20 -21 - 22 or Third Eye Blind - Fourth Eye Blind- you get the picture). It was a lot of boy bands, crappy post grunge (Creed!), and douche-rock (Limp Bizkit and many others). There was great music being made by bands like Sleater Kinney and Yo La Tengo but it wasn't breaking through like grunge had, and how the early 2000s rock bands would.

Don Gately forgive me, but I think you over categorise things, it's unnecessary. Good bands came and went throughout the indie scene, through the 90s onwards. White stripes was one of them. That's all. It's like you're talking in media-speak.
