MMMM has the occasional highlight where the goofy boyband comes together with a compelling tune, but the lows on this album are horrifically cringe.

I’m a big fan of this album, but I can definitely see why you dislike it. I don’t mind the corniness in the lyrics and actually enjoy it a lot of the time, mostly because I have never once taken it seriously. Never have I once listened to this album and been like “damn that was some pretty insightful shit”, it’s just stupid fun to me. Casting that aside though, I can see where you’re coming from on most of the ones you dislike. Haiku has a boring instrumental, but I can usually sit through it because I like the corny lyrics. Just apathy is the most boring song on the album musically, and it’s lyrics are ass. Be born’s instrumental is nice, but I fucking DESPISE the lyrics. Where I disagree most is with the whole world and you and banana man. I really enjoy both of them and cannot be convinced otherwise. Despite my differing opinions, I really enjoyed this video. Watching someone talk about how they dislike this album just made me realize why I like it. Unsubscribed.

I think this album is all pretty intensely mid-2000s and your mileage may vary with this album with where you stand on that and corniness. For me, the corniness gives it a kind of campy charm that’s endearing for me. It’s uncompromisingly upbeat in a way that can be refreshing when a lot of music out there has to be serious, cynical, or cool.

@Aquarium Gravel emotion without logic is... emotion. that's what emotion is. a lot of people (but not all) feel emotion before anything logical. logic is the analytical evaluation of emotion. it could be possible this video isn't meaning to be analytical, but a person expressing emotion; saying how he feels without explaining why he feels it and all yk? this is a first reaction, not a review. his constant ridicule of it (though it may seem unfair, not logical and confusing) could simply be him expressing his emotions. emotions, again, by nature hold no logic. to me it seems most of all of it is jokes / purposeful exaggeration to convey his feelings, like a lot of people do when they dislike something. like the expression to "rag" on something lol and i could definitely understand how (especially if you don't agree with his opinions) it's very rude and crass. --that's all just a theory on a possible interpretation though. he could be actually analytical in this video, you could find it illogical and believe he just doesn't understand the album because of it, but it could also be likely that you just don't understand him. i see lots of people accuse others of 'simply not interpreting it the right way' or 'not understanding it' when people scrutinise media they like. im not saying that's definitely 100% the case here, but just as an (overused) reminder, art is subjective! let people enjoy what they wanna like, let people dislike what they wanna hate.

this has always been my ‘comfort album’-something that i could look to when i felt bad. i acknowledge that it isn’t perfect or anything, but i somewhat dislike when people write it off just for being weird or whatever. It takes me back to being a young child and not taking the world too seriously. @Jeremy U's ReevU I don't think Brad is against artists being oddball lol. He's pretty clearly got a thing for experimental music. However, many of these songs sound equally experimental and uninspired, which are not traits that mix well. He considered Ruler of Everything the best track on the album despite containing a boatload of Tally Hall's staple cornball edginess. That's probably because it presented a fully-formed idea, which was actually well represented in the song's execution. Personally, I find a lot of the songs in this album contain that 'insufferable theatre-kid melodrama while simultaneously lacking any tangible emotional core'... kinda... vibe? @@moris_tm6670 Fair enough, I'll admit that a portion of my perspective on the band is due to the fanbase and its tendency for overanalysis (not a unique quality to any fanbase). That being said, how did you decide on those two songs? Is there an interview I’m missing? Only a few of these songs come across as light-hearted or silly. **Maybe** the band intended to make a serious song for shits and giggles, but then that just makes them seem more uninspired lol I think Brad might have been less **irritated** had he come in less… cynical (although that’d be woefully out of character lmao), but I don’t know if it would have changed his final score. In his review of Pop Food, Brad explained his impression of Stauber as "empty music that was trying to be experimental but didn't feel experimental in the slightest," which strikes me as a more accurate representation of his irritation here than “He doesn’t like quirky music / he’s annoyed the band takes themselves seriously.” The difference was that said album somewhat won him over in the end whereas this album failed. Frankly, I don’t think Tally Hall was ever gonna be Brad’s kinda music but neither is almost anything I listen to nowadays. Enjoy what you want and Good Day ;]

pausing the album every few seconds to point out the “cringe” doesn’t really make for a good first listening experience. this really shows as well because after re-listening with a different state of mind you rated many of the songs higher. otherwise, fun review. much more fair to the album than the hp2 one was and i agree with some points here. be born is trash, and banana man is.. questionable. i still do love this album, though :) and thanks for pointing out joe’s controversy; i disagree with the transphobia points bc he was just misinformed (im trans) but though the doc is accusatory and that video is garbage (made by a conservative ranttuber??☠️) some of his behavior *is* concerning, and he shouldn’t be put on a pedestal like many people in the fandom do. i do adore his music but he’s human, after all.

if you’re not already familiar with them you might appreciate they might be giants a bit more; “flood” is the only album of their’s i’ve heard in its entirety but it similarly has a sort of goofy, not-very-serious tone to it but benefits from a lot of variety and exploration in different sounds, non-pretentious lyrics with oddly specific but unique subject matters, and songs that can’t really overstay their welcome given how short they are, for better or for worse

They Might Be Giants is like Tally Hall but better in every way. I really want a Flood reaction now. Lincoln, Apollo 18, Here Comes Science, The Spine, Nanobots and I Like Fun would all be fun reactions too. I listen to a lot of depressing emo stuff, so it’s nice to have a band that can just put a smile on my face. I can always count on them to make fun, happy, carefree vibes with occasional deeper meanings. They also make music specifically designed to appeal to adults and young children which is cool. The fact that they have 22 albums and only one song that’s in my “sad mix” playlist is remarkable.

Edit: The reason Hidden in the Sand and Murders are popular is because of TikTok. I was like you once, I kept hearing the name "Tally Hall" mentioned, and every time I checked them out I didn't really like their music. Then I heard Ruler of Everything. From that point on, I couldn't stop listening to it and decided to check out the album. I still didn't really like most of the songs, except maybe The Bidding. Over time, I kept listening to the songs and gradually became more and more warmed up to them, then I started to actually choose to listen to them to the point where I enjoyed Miracle Musical on my first/second listen. All in all, I would definitely call them an acquired taste, and everyone's different so your experience will almost definitely be different from my own. I'd like to finish this by saying no one's forcing you to listen to this, and if you don't want to, that's perfectly fine. I'm glad you went over the allegations and came to your own conclusion. It's very common that one's enjoyment of a person's art can make them biased, and clearly I'm no exception. It's hard to come to terms with the fact that someone who helped create something that brought you so much joy brought others so much pain. It's also hard to decide what to do with the memories you have with their work. Are they invalid and phony? I'm not quite sure myself. I wish I had a conclusive statement I could put here, but I'm still trying to figure it out myself.
@valkyrie2832
@valkyrie2832 2 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, I think the memories are valid. Especially if the music in question is very meaningful to you. (If it represents a time in your life, or a particular person for you, etc). As to whether you should continue listening to said artist, that’s up to you. I usually believe in separating art from the artist (while still keeping in mind what they did and not just sweeping it under the rug, of course), but it depends on the situation.

Ok dropping the whole Dog from Raditude thing and breaking character for a sec: It’s hard for sure. The Smiths and Brand New used to be my two favorite bands. Now, Weezer and Death Cab For Cutie have taken those spots, partly due to the fact that the frontmen of The Smiths and Brand New… aren’t exactly swell guys to put it lightly. I kept trying to hold onto the memories I have with those bands and not let it affect my enjoyment of their music, but I just kept feeling guilty in the back of my mind and it got harder and harder to enjoy the music. I still listen to both of those bands and it’s often enjoyable, but I don’t consider them my favorites anymore, not necessarily because of the people behind it, but more so the fact that it hindered my love for their music for quite a while. And they get paid for streaming so that also comes with some guilt.

Personally, I have loved this album for a while for its variety and unique/innovative work. Me watching this video made me realize WHY I like this album. If you look into tallyhall while their first album was out, they didn’t stick with a genre of music. That’s the whole point on why some songs sound weirder than others. They made up their own genre of music, calling it “fabloo”. They ended up dropping it because people started identifying what fabloo was, and categories and genres for their music, which is what they didn’t want. The effects and the different writing of songs themselves are what make the album wonky, odd, and well, mechanical/marvelous. And throughout the video it was hard to follow along when after every 4 words or in the beginning, you would pause the song to start criticizing and insulting it of how the lyrics are “the worst you’ve ever heard”. The face palms and putting your head down every minute as well aren’t funny either. Each member would write a song of theirs, the band then cleaning it up and recording it. The lyrics and writing are definitely going to be different. And for all of the Joe hawley document believers, the majority of the doc was debunked. Lots of it was either exaggerated or made up to make him look like a bad influencer. Joe was misinformed, and he was not doing most things said intentionally. I recommend doing some research before reacting to tallyhall or really any artist, and then going off about how the story in their songs don’t make any sense and turn it into a video of insulting the members.

Yeah, I'm not sure I even knew who Jordan Peterson _was_ when I first watched that video, But I was definitely a bit skeptical of it, Because it seemed like the guy was not coming from a place of concern, Or trying to find the truth, But rather just trying to defend a musician he likes. Also I think one of the main sources he gave for Joe Hawley not being transphobic was that he remembered seeing a post where he said trans rights one time but couldn't find it afterwards, Which is honestly a really shoddy source.

I actually just listened to this album yesterday on vinyl and I gotta say, I freaking ADORED it. I would probably give it like a 10/10. It’s quirky nature and experimentation led to a wild and enjoyable experience for me from beginning to end. Each song gave me something new and entertaining. Although I can totally understand that it may be off putting for some, I figured I would throw my two cents in and say that I really love this album.

This is quite similar to how I first reacted to Marvin's when I listened to it for the first time. It's now one of my favorite albums of recent memory. You will convert soon enough, Bradley... Jokes aside, I liked the video a lot. While there are some really bizarre moments and takes in the video that I am in strong disagreement with ("the joy I get from listening to 6 foot, 7 foot as opposed to this" was a particularly absurd comparison to be making), I think this, once again, just boiled down to it not being your thing for the most part, and it seems like you made that pretty clear while also acknowledging the parts of the album where, musically speaking, it gets pretty good. Overall, I'm just ultimately glad you gave the album a shot, even if it wasn't your thing!

I cannot believe I watched a grown man embarrass himself for 45 minutes. It was funny but I spend enough time around children already so Brad here acting like a man-child caused an instant rejection in the form of what I find only fitting to describe as "cringe". I don't use this word often. Never, actually. The fact I have to resort to it now is disappointing.

40 minutes of a contrarian making shallow, reactionary points to an album a lot of people love. It's not insightful and he sounds more stoned than my deadbeat uncle. Doesn't enjoy starch or mid 2000s white people. Every point is juxtaposed by his future, sober self the next morning. Subscribed.

You've got some great points and criticisms hidden in here. It's just such a shame it's buried under a veritable avalanche of the word "cringe" and self-fulfilling prophecies (I've never seen someone sabotage a first listen for themselves as badly as you consistently did here). I'm not a superfan of the band or the album, don't get me wrong. Just was a genuinely irritating watch the entire way through that (ironically enough, given your overall thoughts on the album) made me cringe *hard*, despite how much I wanted to give the review a chance.

Now that we’re at tally hall, could you react to the Gizmodgery album by Self. It’s a (90s) band made mostly by Matt Mahaffey (thus the name Self) but their music is really refreshing. In this particular album they actually used an element from a toy instrument for each song, kinda cool idk. My excuse for this random recommendation is because their song “Dead Man” was played in a tally hall vlog. Anyways please and thank you and bye
