In June 1966, The Who's co-manager Chris Stamp filmed the group up on the roof and in Pete Townshend's flat on the top floor of 87 Wardour Street in Soho, London. The interview lasted for approximately 20 minutes and this five-minute segment was intended for broadcast later in the year in the US on ABC TV's 'Where The Action Is' but it was never ever shown. The live clips towards the end include footage of the group at the 6th National Jazz & Blues Festival in Windsor, 30 July 1966. A couple of brief clips from this film were included in the 1979 documentary 'The Kids Are Alright'.

It’s funny to see how their personalities changed through the years, Keith seemed so calm and reserved in this interview and Roger obviously had a chip on his shoulder and seemed like he played the tough guy. Pete was more light hearted and of course John doesn’t say a word as usual.

Roger was the tough guy. As a matter of fact, he got the lead job because he was a tough guy and the others simply were not. Sure, later on Pete tried to be the tough guy, but we all know about him throwing his fists around and 'preaching from his chair'. They are all bad arse, in my book. The WHO rules...

Tough guy Roger was a bad mother F'er. He didn't do drugs and he didn't drink. He got kicked out of the band for putting all of the drugs down the toilet. He punched Keith Moon in the face so they kicked him out of the band. But I have been a big a big WHO fan. I was reading that Roger would not take any SHIT. He would just punch people in the face. So acting like a tough guy it's not an act.

@@SpaceGuitar69 well, he's certainly very calm here anyway. And he doesn't want the camera on him at first. Very Un-Keith like. If this is summer 1966, then he just became a dad. That's what made The Who "it" for me. They always (esp. Pete) seemed to have that self-effacing sense of humor going, like they're winking at you and saying "we don't take ourselves too seriously here". They even did it on stage...until suddenly, they were DEADLY serious (like the crescendo in Sparks or the end of Won't Get Fooled Again). Then? Clear the runway!

Jeff Stein (Director of The Kids Are Alright) had this listed as March 1967. Revolver wasn't put out until August 1966 and Where The Action Is was cancelled in March or April 1967, so that's possibly why this didn't make the cut. Persnickety about specific dates - I know. The Beatles finished recording Revolver at the end of June, but even if they were finished in the studio, the album cover couldn’t possibly have been ready as the album title wasn’t decided until July. Probably the summer of 67 they were featured on the “Today” show. It was my first exposure to The Who. My older brother and I watched the feature and my reaction was “why would a drummer use two bass drums, that’s stupid…”. At that time in life, I was aware of Ringo and Charlie Watts, both of whom used basic drum kits.

Funny because at the exact same time Pink Floyd were introduced to the US with Nick Mason playing double bass as well.
