I'll never forget seeing The Who perform this song in Vancouver, BC, Canada in the early 80s. During the song, a fan somehow managed to get onto the stage. Pete Townsend waved the security guards away and let the fan approach him. The fan shook Pete's hand, turned to the crowd, put his arms in the air in celebration and jumped into the arms of the crowd. The crowd (myself included) went WILD!! Great song!! I failed a Geography test to win this album from a radio station lol.

Entwistle's hand always reminded me of a Tarantula the way his fingers moved. And L K-O is right about the Toronto 82 version. You can hear Entwistle's bass growling throughout the whole song. He said he played at maximum treble and maximum volume. Best bass player I've ever heard or seen.

I still think Pete's best intro guitar lead was Toronto, December 1982. He never repeats the same riff, which is one of the things that, in my opinion, makes him one of the best lead guitarists of all time. His reputation as a guitarist was built on rhythm guitar, but he was able to go wild on lead guitar, beyond the norms of other so called lead guitarists.

You are right, it took four months of thorough investigation before he was cleared and that should be the end of it. Unfortunately there are vigilante types out there with a lynch mob mentality, who because the verdict didn't go the way they felt it ought to will continue to accuse despite a fair trial held in a court of law. If these people had their way they would have probably gone round to his house with torches and pitchforks, then hung him from the nearest tree without a trial.

Roger was the singer & lead guitarist in the Detours, a band that also featured John Entwistle. John recruited his friend Pete to play banjo & guitar…and eventually the Detours morphed into The Who. Roger’s guitar part in Eminence Front is dead simple, but don’t imagine he can’t play.

The Who have been a part of me since 1976 - my first live gig was, and this is the best gig EVER. This iS a TRUE MY STORY. ABOUT 100 true WHO Fans and Supporters were chosen, picked-up at Hyde Park Corner, and taken, very nervously to Shepperton Studios at Elstree, then owned by The Who. During the 1-hour coach journey, we were told that the band had to record 3 songs for the film, The Kids Are Alright. As this was exciting, most of us had no idea how it set up, we didn't care. Thought there would be many more people. When we got there, there were people only from our coach, the place would be able accommodate about 200 people, at most. There were professional video-recording cameras, approx. 10 strategically placed around the studio/'arena'. Then The Who came on, Pete didn't look happy AT ALL. Anyway, they played 'Who Are You', snf and was NOT good. And off they went. The song was recorded. They came back, Pete now very cheesed-off, recorded it and then Pete had enough of this, he pointed the cameraman, saying "We are here for them, NOT YOU. What followed was truly amazing, excellent, and 'mind-blowing' - they were now at the peak, with Pete turning up the volume to maximum. WE WERE RIGHT IN FRONT, COULD TOUCH THE STAGE, AND THE BAND WERE AT BEST ONLY ABOUT 15-20 FEET (NOT YARDS, METRES, ETC. AND VERY NERVOUS!! THEY PLAYED FOR AT LEAST 2-HOURS, KEITH WAS AT HIS BEST, ROGER AND JOHN WERE AT THEIR BEST - AND PETE WAS IN A VERY SPECIAL PLACE, AND FOR US, AMAZING DOES NOT DESCRIBE HIS MOOD. And Rabbit 🐰 was there as his usual best, and there was another lady percussionist, and was brilliant. They started-off with Substitute, and went ahead continuously for about 2 hours. No breaks. IT WAS THE BEST THE WHO GIG I HAD THE PRIVILEDGE TO BE THERE - SO FEW OF US, 'HYPNOTISED' (as in Won't FOOLED AGAIN). UNFORTUNATELY, IT HAD TO CONCLUDE AT SOME POINT. They went off with our clapping, whistles, etc., and came back to record Magic Bus, and best ever live Won't Get Fooled Again, the lasers surrounding Roger, BUT at ending, just before Roger's fabulous and very special Rock ending after Rabbit had completed his piano/keyboard bit of the song (2-3 SECONDS, AT BEST), SOME IDIOT from the council had noticed a BIT OF ONE OF THE LASERS HAD, AT A VERY LOW, INSIGNIFICANT (IMHO) LEVEL, AND INSISTED THAT THE LASERS ARE COMPLETELY SWITCHED OFF - SAID HE HAD TOLD MANAGEMENT OF THE LAW, ETC., THERE WAS NO CHOICE - OFF THEY WENT. The last laugh was with The Who - it was A PERFECT RECORDING of Won't Get Fooled Again, as those of you who have seen the film will confirm. Pete had climbed on to the massive speakers, and as Roger started his special 'scream', Pete jumped off, slid across the stage, while still playing the guitar perfectly. But it had to come up the end, Keith kicked his drums 'out of his way' and all of them came together 'TO THANK US' - we were deafened, elated, and we had to find a loo. To my surprise and 'shock', Roger came in, stood next to me for a pee - it took me a few minutes to get started!! Left speechless, he completed before me, he had said, 'Hi' and I acknowledged it, complimented the whole gig, and thanked him for "an excellent experience" - NO OTHER WORDS CAME INTO, BY NOW NUMB, BRAIN - HOW EMBARRASSING! IN CONCLUSION, THE EXPERIENCE WAS FANTASTIC. HAVE BEEN A MEGA PART OF MY LIFE, ALBEIT VERY POSITIVELY AND VERY SIGNIFICANTLY TO ME, BUT I HAVE ONE REGRET, THEY WILL NEVER KNOW HOW MUCH!! 🤣

This is what I would argue to be one of the best Rock songs of all time! Two chords, straight beat on the drums, keys doing the same thing just about the whole song, and some of the most colorful guitar work I've ever heard. This song carries two messages for me, the first one being that we all fool each other and ourselves pretending to be one thing or another, we get caught up in the "front" that we "put on". The lyrics explain themselves, really. The second meaning I find in this song, is that we should simply focus on ourselves, not get lost in the "eminence front" but instead get lost in a groovy jam, a hobby, nature, separate yourself from the ropes of society and just be happy. Do it in such a way that you don't forget that you're hiding, do it in a way that you forget you're simply out here living. Maybe the song isn't about girls and fast cars, drugs and drinking, but it is about being present and aware, and that's much more valuable than anything another person could offer you.

It is really hard to find a foursome with as much individual talent as Moon, Daltrey, Entwistle, and Townshend.

It's insane how similar Pete and Roger's voices sound. After listening to this song over and over again for the last three months, I just found out that Pete is the one singing. Quite shocked. I never knew he ever sung lead on any Who songs.

Townsend sang a lot, but it was Daltry who could put the volume, the angst, and rock and roll scream into it. Daltry was one of the best at that. Think about the "YEeeeaaahhHH!" after the long solo section in "Won't Get Fooled Again." Townsend was the principle songwriter and would come to the band with his demos who would then embody and expand the ideas that Townsend had, so it was natural that Daltry would need to be an extension of Townsend's vocalizations.
