Ripped myself from the 40th anniversary It's Hard vinyl - in much higher quality than any of the other versions uploaded here to KZfaq.
It was released exclusively for Record Store Day 2022 but I don't believe in artificial scarcity of music. Lots of people will want to hear this, so here it is, in great quality.

Amazing. I waited a long time to hear this. Yes, Pete's vocal (which I believe was 1st take) nailed it. And this a cool gem.

Listening to this again, they were right to release the version they did. This is cool, but the all-Pete version is better.

Yeah, I think Pete's vocals are more suited for this song. They're sharper and more cutting to the vibe of it all.

Some little vocal quirks that Roger threw in that don’t really click as well as Pete’s version. I can now see why this became Pete’s song to sing. I do wonder if the section heard here with Pete singing was always by design, or that Roger never sang those lyrics so they had to use them. It sounds like they lifted Pete’s vocals directly from the final song.

I'm sure Pete's vocal parts here are from the same take as the final version. I would imagine Roger probably recorded at least one full take of the song, more likely a few of them to try different approaches. But the call and response bit they do at the end suggests to me that this was a deliberate choice to record a take of Roger with their voices alternating... Mainly by the fact that Roger seems to intentionally weave around Pete's lines.

@@bluesrocker91 I would certainly buy this version digitally. It's interesting to hear every so often. The call and repeat from Roger & Pete near the end is very appealing, and I could see them arranging it that way live at times. Still, Townsend was the right voice for this one. You can feel his fire and cynical condemnation for the culture he's putting the harsh spotlight on here. Definitely a stone cold classic.

This was Pete's song most of the way. The Yamaha Electone and his return from substance abuse were the building blocks.

It wasn't, bizarrely. I hate artificial scarcity of music, it's a track and it exists and it'd take like 5 minutes for them to wack it on streaming services - that's why I've uploaded it, so everyone can enjoy it

Do you think the option in 1982 was to release this song with Pete & Roger alternating verses (as presented here) or was it to have Roger (or Pete) sing the entire song? In other words, is there a version of Roger singing the entire song? Did they just remix this in 2022 with Roger singing the first verse then Pete the second? Not that important, but just curious. I like the few songs where Pete & Roger trade off singing: Long Live Rock, Naked Eye (actual verses) and Baba O'Riley, Sister Disco, Another Tricky Day (live)...others? While I'm babbling, Drowned is one of those Who songs that has SO many version: Roger singing it all (LP, early live shows), Pete singing it all with Roger on harmonica (my personal favorite), Pete alone acoustic, Pete acoustic with the band. What a great song.

I once read that Roger did it on his own, too. That's what I expected here.

I assumed Roger probably recorded an incomplete vocal track and then they realised all these years later they could do a good 'alt' version if they mixed it with some of Pete's vocal track.

In 1982, they did record this song, with Roger singing. Pete did His.

Roger always tries to add his own flavor to these songs. In my opinion, I think he tried to have a hipster attitude. Didn't work. Maybe, overall Roger can't sing with a hipster attitude. I think Roger would have done a great job with his regular straight vocals.
