-Roger Daltrey
The Who were scheduled as the second to last act (before Jefferson Airplane) to play on Saturday, August 16th. When they actually started playing it was already Sunday morning around 5:00 am. They played their exceptional "Tommy" album, a Rock Opera dealing with the struggle of a deaf, dumb and blind boy who later finds a cure and gains stardom with his messianic movement. The finale of this performance took place during sunrise which occurred at 6:05 am.
Personnel:
John Entwistle - bass, vocals
Roger Daltrey - vocals
Keith Moon - drums
Pete Townshend - guitar, vocals
The Abbie Hoffman Incident was an incident that happened during The Who's set right after the song "Pinball Wizard." Abbie Hoffman was able to get on stage and grab a microphone while Pete Townshend tuned his guitar. He said: "I think this is a pile of shit! While John Sinclair rots in prison..." Hoffman was protesting against the imprisonment of John Sinclair (leader of the White Panther Party and manager of the left-wing hard-rock band MC5) who had been convicted and sentenced to nine years of prison because of marijuana possession. Townshend, angry that someone took the stage, yelled: "Fuck off! Fuck off my fucking stage!" allegedly hit him with his guitar, sending him off stage again. Townshend then added: "I can dig it!"; And after the song "Do You Think It's Alright?": "The next fuckin' person that walks across this stage is gonna get fuckin' killed! Alright? [crowd cheers] You can laugh, but I mean it!" No one ran on stage for the remainder of the performance.

I am currently watching The Who performing at Woodstock 1969,they would have to the most outstanding act so far I cannot wait to see Carlos Santana in action, the reason I decided to play the complete concert is that I will be turning 71 years old next Saturday and thought I would give myself an early birthday present.😊 Regards, Doug Hughes Williamstown Nth, Australia

This was one of the better bands that played at Woodstock. The conditions for the musicians and the concert goers sucked royally. I was there - up 3 days, wet, hungry, tired, but rocked none the less. I'm glad to say I was part of the Woodstock Generation. There will never be anything nearly as close to this concert - ever again.

I'm a huge fan of zeppelin and zeppelin bootlegs, but I will admit that my favourite concert bootleg ever is The Who at Fillmore East, May 6th 1968. It's the only soundboard recording of the who from that era (except for some BBC sessions and the Rock and roll circus), but Its a great listen! It showcases the who right when they're on the thin border between their regular rock & roll/pop inspired numbers of the early 60's and the free-form, power-driven playing style that they picked up with Tommy in 1969 and continued to play with throughout their career. I admit that If I were to choose a band I liked better, I'd still pick zeppelin, but I still have yet to see a concert that they did that matches the energy that you hear on the fillmore east bootleg (though "Blueberry Hill" and several of the 1969 fillmore west tapes such as "dancing avocado" do come pretty close).

I am glad to finally see the footage and listen to the bootlegs of the whole show. After hearing for years "The Who bombed at Woodstock" it is nice to see the footage and decide for myself. I suspect a lot of concert goers slept through the set and talked up how bad it was as a "sour grapes" method of convincing themselves they hadn't missed much.

The Who in its original form was simply a beast of a rock n roll musical machine. The entire band was on a different level of sonics as well as performance which is why they needed to be at Woodstock. The interactions are sometimes nuanced and at others very bold faced. My favorite thing about this footage is witnessing the deep rhythmic connection between Moonie and Townsend which was beyond intense.

Technical comment for guitarists and specialists: it is very interesting today to see how the great sound of the Woodstock guitars in 1969 was mainly produced by single coil pickups, whether they were Gibson P90s (The Who, Santana, The Grease Band with Joe Cocker, Mountain, Canned Heat, etc) or Fender (Jimi Hendrix Gipsy Sun and Rainbows) or Rickenbacker (Credence Clearwater Revival, etc)... Note: humbucker pickups had already been invented by Seth Lover in 1955 and only the Gibson ES of Ten Years After and Jefferson Airplane they had...

I saw the first Who show after Entwistle's death at the Hollywood Bowl. They had canceled the original show for a couple days to deal with it. Pete and Roger walked out and Pete walked over and gave Roger a hug, to the crowd's cheering. Pete said something like, "Sorry for the cancelled show, but we had a problem with our bass player. Typical." So brusque and understated. So British.

Actually, Daltrey said that the sunrise during See Me, Feel Me was one of the greatest moments of his entire career. It happened in conjunction with that exact lyrical moment in which the sun coming up was almost meant to happen at that particular time. Perhaps the performance as a whole was disappointing to them, but expectations were high, there were many distractions (which they rode out very well considering the circumstances surrounding the woeful stage area), the sound system sucked, the scheduling was awry, and there were too many psychotropics/psychedelics for their liking. Daltrey was sober the entire time and (for that matter) throughout his entire career as well due to a realization that, if he wanted to preserve his voice for longevity and maintain balance within the group in which there was so much craziness, he would have to remain straight and clear-headed. It obviously has worked for him as he sounds phenomenal to this day for his age.

Monica C. - yeah, it was pretty fu**ing great. The Who, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Humble Pie, and so many others who followed in their footsteps. The world will sadly never see their kind again. Now the young people listen to rap, hip-hop, whatever. It’s tripe, garbage. Your generation, however, has KZfaq, Blu-ray, DVD, and media that wasn’t even dreamt in my day. We only had our memories to carry us through until the next great show. Enjoy the great rock from its proud days young lady, and remember if it’s too loud, you’re too old!

I read somewhere that there was almost no food or water when they arrived and their set got pushed way back beyond scheduled start time. They were supposed to go on at some typical rock star time like 11:00pm and didn't play until something like 2:00am. None of which I believe as fact, it's just a rough of the story I remember from way back when. One thing is obvious: they rose above it all and played the FUCK out of their set.
