The three albums The Who released consecutively from 1969 to 1973, Tommy, Who’s Next, and Quadrophenia, are and incredible set of work and have to be considered one of the greatest runs in rock history. They took this band from being merely good, to a whole level that no one else was at or ever will be

How could you miss out 'Live At Leeds' (1970) in this run...? Not a studio album, but an example of The Who at their best. And The Who at their best live can't be beaten. It isn't possible.

The Who at their finest. Daltrey's vocals are astounding. And to answer Kel's question Quadrophenia is someone with four split personalities which the main character on the album Jimmy has.

I remember hearing this intro for the first time in 1973. I was in my 5th year of piano lessons and when I heard this I was like, “I want to play like that!” Then there’s Keith Moon’s masterful drums 💙♥️ I say it all the time, we really had the best music in the 1970’s. What an amazing time to grow up. I feel truly blessed 💙🎸🎤

Quadrophenia is a rock opera about a mod with multiple personality disorder. He has 4 (quad) distinct personalities. He is a lover, a fighter, a mad man and his normal, lonely everyday personality. The movie of the same title doesn't do the greatest job of remaining faithful to the album but it does a fair enough of a job and does a good job of explaining the mod culture to us Americans.
@deltaex2621

Agreed. As a side note: The movie was Sting's (from The Police ofc) debut film appearance.

Nice job, Kurt. I'll add that Pete created the word from "schizophrenia," but he didn't like the way it sounded, so he took the 'r' out. I think the movie is worth a look, as it does indeed give a good look at the "mod" culture, whence these boys came. One other note, and I'm sure someone has mentioned, Pete had another "rock opera" in mind. Can't remember the name offhand, but the Who's Next album (arguable their very best) had most of the music for it. Pete is definitely a freaking genius.

I sort of agree with your comment about the Ox but it's a hard call you are looking at the most talented individual in a band of very talented individuals. I think the Townshend edges it IMHO because of his songwriting skills. But then I might get up tomorrow and think it's one of the other

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY 🎉🎂🥂 Love both of you ♥️ Rich, you picked the perfect song for this celebration. My favorite Who song. Got chills listening to it. Did see the Who in 1978 with Kenny Jones on drums. Loudest amplification system for ANY concert I've been to. That concert was (also) one of the first that used laser lighting effects. The Who and Pink Floyd were the first bands to incorporate lasers in rock shows in the mid-70s ♥️

Happy anniversary! Been watching since almost the beginning, and I've been waiting to see Kel react to this song. It was worth the wait. I consider this song to be the perfect combination of hard Rock and classical elements. The way the (synthesized?) strings rise and fall, propelling that 6/8 beat forward, is pure musical genius. There is literally nothing about this song I don't love.

Went to the old Belle Vue Arena in Manchester (essentially a huge old Barn of a place). I travelled there from Liverpool and was amazed at the huge 4 way speakers they had installed for the waves and rain sounds. Went with a mate called Stu Fox and neither of us could hear a bloody thing for hours later. A totally body & mind experience. I've been lucky to see them live! 5 times from 1969 to 2005. Each gig was a whole body and mind experience. Only the day after was it possible to take in what I had seen and felt.

The 60s brought us new levels of rock n roll...a new generation of rock. The Beatles were wildly amazing. The Stones were incredible. The Doors...brilliant. Jimi...well...he's Jimi freakin' Hendrix. Enough said. But...The Who...was on a talent level, that, in my humble opinion, was WORLDS higher than the others. I can't even explain it. But, you get to listen to them, and experience them, for yourselves...and figure it out, in your own way. Happy Anniversary to the Show! Keep the vids coming! #feelthemusic o's - I'll just throw out my request, again, since it's been a while, since the last time I mentioned it. #MadSeason "Wake Up" "River of Deceit" "All Alone" They're a 90s "Super Group" comprised of members of a few grunge era bands; Lane Staley from AIC doing the amazing vocals. The best way I can explain them...think...if Pink Floyd was an early 90s band out of Seattle, pioneering the grunge scene. I really don't know any other way to describe their sound. You'll just have to give 'em a listen. 😉😎

Pete's 4th attempt at a rock opera. First there was the mini opera A Quick One While He's Away. Then came Tommy which is worth a listen straight through so you get the story. Then came Lifehouse which never materialized, but was based on the premise that one single note could change the world. It was supposed to be interactive with the audience and full of multi media set in a dystopian society. Pete could never really explain it clearly and it was technically impossible to produce at the time, so it died, but the songs became the landmark album, Who's Next. Quad is Pete at his best and most lyrical song writing. Quad was a recording 'innovation' but the main character also had 4 different personalities. Quad isn't recorded in Quad ironically. It's all based around the Mods vs. Rockers era in England.

Congratulations Rich & Kel. What an epic and timeless choice!! This song does give you goosebumps from the very beginning and Roger Daltrey's voice is unbelievable. Kel, how about the intro with the piano that just blows you off your chair? It happened to me too. Thanks you guys

Quadrophenia refers to the main character in the rock opera having 4 distinct personalities. It is a play on the quadrophonic thing that was going on at the time in hi-fi playback equipment (circa 1973). Lots of LPs were specially encoded to be compatible with either XS (Sansui) or SX (Sony) (which would enhance normal stereo to simulate 4 channel reproduction as well as handing the decoding for pre-encoded discs that separated instruments into four channels with some bleed between channels) or CD-4 (JVC) technology (requiring a special, sharper stylus with a low mass moving coil and demodulator to reproduce 4 discrete channels that isolated instruments during playback). Both formats were backward compatible with stereo, as in the LPs would play on any stereo playback system. But with the CD-4, the additional channels were encoded on high-frequency carrier signals that here etched into the top part of the groove wall (40,000Hz+) and would wear out over time with repeated playback and certainly would be destroyed quickly when a standard stereo stylus with moving magnets (higher mass) was used. Both 4 channel systems produced interesting effects, but most people considered it a gimmick more than anything else that required people to invest in twice as many speakers and additional equipment. Was it worth it? Well, it never really caught on. A few years later, it was basically supplanted with digital time delay and, much later, 5.1 and 7.1 multi-channel recording on digital media. I mention it here because, based on the album's title, a lot of people who bought Quadorophenia wrongly believing it was a quadrophonic recording.
