Thank God for the vocal surgeon at Mass General Hospital in Boston for saving Roger's voice! Daltrey sounds amazing on this entire album!!! His voice soars like the old days on "Beads On One String"!

Saw them on John Entwhistle's birthday October 9th in San Francisco. Mr. Starkey was far more than adequate on the drums and with full orchestration it was very impressive. As Pete reminded us several times "we are old". The Beatles put out two songs in the mid 90's and had no problem calling those songs Beatles songs. I think the Who have that same right. The album is better than average if for no other reason than it is getting late in the day. "Hope l die before l get old." Pete was not singing so much about physical age as he was how you think and how you feel. Some people in their thirties are over 80. Regards.

That was Roger's (iconic) singing, not Pete's. Re: the Beatles, they did have 3/4 still around, compared to 2/4 of the Who (and also Queen, these days). Just saying. I'm not sure what I think about this point, ultimately. If they don't call themselves [band name] then they won't sell as many records... true, but the less selfish-sounding aspect of that is that some casual fans of the band will possibly miss material which comes out under the names of the band members. (Obviously enthusiasts will recognize the member names.) So it's not entirely that simple.

While they aren't on the whole album, touring members Zak Starkey and Pino Palladino are on most of the album. Zak would have been on more of it, but he had other things going when the band started recording. I read recently that Pete and Roger extended an offer to Zak to become a permanent member, but he declined.

I am a 40 year fan, have seen them 2x live. I bought the CD about a month ago...gave it a listen. It sounded rough and I could not absorb it all. But the next day, relistened and it got better. Have played it over 20 x now, would rank it as one of their best. It wasnt them who was rough it was me. The songs are so rich, so layered that average listener cant fully absorb it at first. Thats the sound of a masterwork, the more you listen the better it gets...thats why they are second only to the Beatles in my opinion. Townsend and Daltry...TRUE MUSICIANS, sincere and still rocking our socks off. The rest of the band...PROS all the way. Thank you WHO, for giving me one more album to listen to !

The vocal for Got Nothing To Prove is from a 1966 demo, with a modern backing track. It's great hybrid that should have been the closer for both versions of the album, both for its sound and the sentiment of the lyrics.

Zak Starkey has been drumming for them for nigh on 30 years, he was chosen because Kenny Jones was not the right style of drummer for The Who. As for pre Entwistle/Moon stuff we all knew post the two of them it would have to be a compromise. As for 'youthful rage' they're sentegenerians FFS

The thing about rock opera's is - how many should one band do in their career? Many Who fans (because they're of later generations), don't remember when Tommy first came out. It was kinda considered a novelty album. One band had their 'Rock & Roll Story Book"; another band had their 'Classical Music & Rock' album, etc. Everyone was looking for a unique angle in releasing their new music. (I always thought Queen dropped the ball by letting The Who have the first Rock Opera, considering Queen are the kings of mixing opera & rock.) Then lightning struck twice for The Who, when they released yet another Rock Opera called Quadrophenia. After that, the Rock Opera schpiel became passe' and old-hat. Weird that Townsend still entertains writing song with that concept to this day.

I daresay that Pete and Roger are reluctant to incorporate two more fully-fledged band members because then they would feel pressure to write, record and do more concerts to justify having a full four-piece band again. They are well into their seventies and know they won't be doing this much longer, so they are content to make new records etc when they feel like it, with no pressure to keep going.

I completely agree your review. Probably i liked most "Break the news" than you did but it's normal, everybody has differents likings. I think that for me "Hero Ground Zero" (that is not my favorite track) was a revelation about Pete Townshend work. I mean we always think to Pete Townshend as a songwriter/guitar/ poet. But it is more than that he is an artistic project by himself. The reason why I'm telling this is that Hero Ground Zero is tightly connected with his new book "The Age of Anxiety". And it's means that for Pete Townshend doesn't exist songs and books but just way to express himself and his ideas in different ways but linked together.

Paul McCartney have frankly not been very active since late 1966... It is ok that people like Billys muzak, i just do not like the notion that people seriously believe that the guy who wrote "Yesterday" also did "Fuh you". That is not the case at all. Lennon had the balls to critize Billy for his muzak. And he did tell people in "How do you sleep" (Altough it went over peoples heads) that JPM is "Yesterday" and that Billy is "Another day".

Don’t want to get Wise is about not wanting to get old. Each verse covers the chronological progression of The Who. And finally, at the end in the last verse Daltry says they got wise Because all the high notes were sung. I’m not sure if you caught any of this but it seems like a very nostalgic song. This review made some good points but I think fussing over song order or which song appeared last on the album is an outdated purist thought process. We live in the digital age where songs can be purchased individually and playlists rule the day. Also, as with many of Pete’s songs, Danny and My Ponies has a deeper message that is there to explore. Street Song seems to be a farewell as if Pete and Roger are leaving much like the Elves did at the end of Lord of the Rings.

Classic rockers are in their 70’s now. The Who’s original lineup were high energy. But that lineup ended 40 years ago. What bothers me with classic band’s new releases is the constant 4/4. Listen to the old tracks and they were all over the place, very experimental like Baba O’Riley & Won’t Get Fooled Again. But I’m the odd music listener. I don’t listen to lyrics, I have to like the music and I love the bizarre. Zappa, Beefheart, Butthole Surfers, Sunn ((0 and The Residents. But being that odd duck who has to like the music over lyrics I have to say that” Who” is their best album in 40 years. Two songs “Ball & Chain” & “Danny & the Ponies” stand out for me. If an album has a couple great tracks, that makes it worth it.

I'm only into your video by two minutes, but I have to say I agree with what you're saying. It's hard to say what makes a group a group. Was it the Who with the first, second, or third drummer? Can it be the Who without Entwhistle? I guess what it comes down to is this: Is the music what "the Who" would make? As far as that goes, I was sorely disappointed with their last album, "Endless Wire". To me, the Who doesn't make slow songs like what comprised that album. They ROCK! From what I've heard of the new album, it's not bad. I have "Endless Wire", but I never listen to it. However, I'll give this one a chance.

Thanks for the review. I've been a Who fan since the mid 70's and have seen them live with both Jones and Starkey. Granted, The Who ceased to exist for me once Keith Moon had passed on and I've only seen a Substitute. The last Who album I really loved was "Who Are You" and I'm happy to say that I really like "Who", I'm still listening to and absorbing it. I love Townshend's old man piss & vinegar take and lyrics! I'd like to as you a question: Have you read Townshend's recent book, "The Age of Anxiety"? My guess is that you haven't as you would've understood the connection of "Hero Ground Zero" to that book.

As a big Who fan for over 39years this album is a big let down. The last great Who song after Entwistle’s death was “ Real good looking boy” and “Old red wine”. Haven’t gone to see them after the loss of John. It is now just Daltrey/ Townshend. Not The Who. Sorry

I actually retooled the track listing on my digital copy of _WHO_ so that it flows better, in my opinion. 1. Ball and Chain 2. I Don't Wanna Get Wise 3. Detour 4. Beads on One String 5. Hero Ground Zero 6. Street Song 7. This Gun Will Misfire 8. Break the News 9. Rockin' in Rage 10. She Rocked My World 11. All This Music Must Fade B-1. I'll Be Back B-2. Danny and My Ponies (if you really want to keep it) B-3. Got Nothing to Prove

The best song that i heard from the album was Ball and Chain, but i will buy it one day the cd and will.listen to it. If you really look at it....it is all done. The Last Who Song that i really liked was Emminence Front...But i always liked Petes Soloalbums PT and the Deep End. But when it comes to the life shows i must say that they sound great and fresh.Zak Starkey the son of Ringo doin a great job. Isn't it a funny story that Ringo gave his son a guitar to his birthday when he was young, while Keith Moon gave Ringos son a part of drum kit😏 ? So it is mend to be i think. However it is not possible to copy a time or a feeling that is gone these days. Entwhistle and Moon where one of the kind and together with Pete and Roger unmatched. This combination of 4 Souls was so powerful and it is my believe it was heavens send.Anyway.But still Roger and Pete works very well together and thats wonderful. Thats nice👍🏽

I disagree about "Break the News". It sounds like a Who song to me. I think it's a wonderful song. I also love "Danny and My Ponies". I also read that "Nothing to Prove" was an early demo that they remade keeping Pete's original vocal track and redoing all the music. If you listen carefully you can tell it's Pete's voice from the mid 1960s. He doesn't sound like that any more. I pretty much agree with the rest of your review.

I totally agree with you, without the replacement drummer who took the place of Keith Moon and became an official member back then, this is sort of a tribute band with only two original members in my humble opinion, but the album is decent and that I can agree with you as well.

Love your channel! Why is it that bands have to complicate releases? I I can understand if there is a super deluxe edition of a release but to release an album with 11 songs and then have an alternate with 14 seems like a cash grab to me. I can understand your frustration.

Hate to do this to you but there's a Japan only edition of WHO with one more bonus track,"SAND." It's the true closer to this disc! Fantastic! Like NOTHING TO PROVE it's a rejected 1966 song and sounds like a SELL OUT outtake. A must have! Throw out your other copies! CD Japan sells it and shipped mine quickly.

Interesting question about Pete and Roger still using The Who name. If Paul and Ringo did a full album together would it be within their right to use The Beatles name?. I do not think so because of the absents of John and George. If John was there to join in that album then perhaps they have the right to use The Beatles name even without George. In Pete and Roger's case I think they have that right to use the name. If Roger was gone and it was Pete and John Entwistle then perhaps not.

A different dynamic between the 2 groups. John & Paul were the main songwriters and singers with George as the Entwistle contributing artist. I do miss hearing 1 or 2 Entwistle tracks on the last 2 Who albums, he added a different flavor and a sense of humor to the group in addition to his incredible bass playing.

Bad example. There is no "Fab two". It is only FAB ONE. Since we only talk about original bandmembers, Ringo is the only original band member left. "bUt siR pAuL iS sTiLL aLiVe". True. But he is not the real James Paul McCartney. Fab Four was John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. Since "Beatle Bill" did not join Beatles until late 1966 he is not a real Beatle. History will not allow it to have existed two Paul McCartneys. I get the concept of your reunion opinion, but regarding ORIGINAL members Ringo is the last Beatle left. Meaning he was part of the band that became known and famous as Fab Four (They were not famous when Pete Best still was with them). I do not feel my PID/Paul was replaced-comment is out of context here, since The Who already in the 70's made a very popular song that hints in the lyrics that JPM was replaced. "So pick up your guitar and play, just like Yesterday!" I only bought The Who's new album in hope for more PID-clues.

I didn’t give this album a long listen when it came out. Your review has made me want to go back to it. I dig your positive negativity on songs which aren’t your favourite. Finding something good in many songs.. I’m kind of the same way as you when it comes to music. Thanks TJR. I love the cover by the way. Shagadellic lol. Maybe this album need a personal track list reorganization. Make it your own. I’ll Be Back. The auto tune on Pete’s voice...I wish he didn’t use it. Nice album for sure.

When you say with out moon and entwistle they lost there rythem section I disagree. They lost there lead section. Townsend 's guitar was the rythem section. Really didn't like the album and thought the drumming was really weak.

Good observation. Though I don't think that Pete gets enough credit for the leads he did actually take, especially live. Much is said about George Harrison's playing these days but for the life of me live George was way sloppier than Pete specifically as a lead player.

DieHard Who fan. But in my opinion they should be called Who's left. I would have never saw the band if it wouldn't have been for Kenny Jones in the late 70s but the band died when Keith Moon died the power of the band was Keith Moon and then it definitely died with John Entwistle. Eminence Front said it best IT'S A PUT ON

Roger’s Vox great as is Pete’s guitar - the rhythm section don’t do a bad job of filling huge shoes - but sorry the songwriting is not up to snuff. Ian Hunter is one person from that genre and vintage who has never lost the writing touch and Finger’s Crossed might be the best thing he has ever written. This Who album has some great playing but for me Ball and Chain was probably the only song I thought was even pretty good, but it is a very generic song.

Great solid album, but with a few dips for me. One is "I'll Be Back," which tears me up because as much as I love Pete solo, that song really feels like a lame interlude of the album. "She Rocked My World" does grow on you, it sounds like something that would have been on McCartney's "Egypt Station" album, but I did expect a rocking album closer instead. As for the bonus tracks, I agree with Daltrey, they shouldn't be there. Again, as much as I love Pete solo, those 3 songs make the album close out a LOT weaker for me; but at least we get one more true Pete demo from early Who era ("Got Nothing To Prove").
