"Water" is a song by the English rock band The Who, originally appearing as the B-side to "5.15" in 1973, and again to the single "Love, Reign o'er Me."
Background
After the success of Tommy in 1969, Pete Townshend began work on Lifehouse. For the first recordings, he produced several demos at his Eel Pie Studios which were related to Lifehouse.[2]
Meaning
It was during these sessions that "Water" was first recorded in the spring of 1970.[3] The plot in Lifehouse revolved around a totalitarian society without rock music. In this society, there is also rampant pollution which becomes a teenage wasteland. "Water" talked of the toughness of everyday life and how:
"They need water, And maybe somebody's daughter."
Live/compilation appear
Live history
"Water" was played by The Who from 1970 until 1971, including at the final show at the Young Vic on 26 April 1971.[4] It made its first live appearance at the first show at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York on 7 June 1970.

I must admit, this has to be one of Townshend's best works. It captures the blues so well but at the same time you can tell it's The Who. Love this song.

It's probably my favourite track too. Pete's rhythm playing was truly at its height and there's minimal guitar noodling just loads of danceable bluesy groove. Fucking amazing.

Meh, there's usually a reason or more it wasn't on an album. It's just meandering and was obviously something they were working through. Also... "we need water... and maybe somebody's daughter."

@@macurban7946In his own way, yes. Two different styles of drumming though so hard to compare. Ringo was stylish and very careful, and all about feel to quote him. Kieth was wild and very loose, and more emotional in his drumming. Ringo was definitely more skilled, on a technical level, but I’d prefer Kieth any day.

The Who is the band every other band has tried to imitate since the late 60s. When you think of the exemplar of a "rock band", you think of the Who: A super talented and musical genius lead guitarist, a steady-as-a-rock bassist, a completely wild and dominating drummer, and a lead singer who blasts out vocals and struts like a rooster. They had every element, and they had it first. No other band had all of these together until the Who. Not to mention they had the best lead, the best bassist, the best drummer all together in one band. Sometimes, you get bands with one or two of these elements, but they had all four together. Plus, they'd split your head open with their volume.

I beg to disagree. Pete Townshend was extremely technical as a rythme guitar player. Check his right hand work in several of the Who's compositions; pinball wizard one example among many. True, he never was a soloist. Notable too, the ability to gesticulate and remain in time, even when making large amplitude right arm movements. He had an uncanny ability to use sus chords too, for maximum effect. The guitar parts were amazingly simple but so musical!

2:14 and 2:26 just blow me away. The way he waits to make the gentle splash then looks around for the reaction/at his bandmates for the next part, and the way he waits for when the drums kick in and sucks in his breath and goes wild on the drums. Keith Moon was one of a kind and in my mind, the definition/ideal of a rock drummer. He had everything, and he was all about his playing. He gave everything to it. Someday, there will be a band as good as The Who, but there will never be another Who. The Who are often passed up over Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, even Cream, but they played so much more loosely. All are to be enjoyed, but The Who was hard blues based alt rock before such a term existed and it’s in the live performances that it shines through. In addition Keith Moon did not like to solo yet his Goldfish is the bomb-so concentrated.

Yup, that’s how we say it in New Jersey, too: “wooder.” How to retrain myself to say it “wah-ter” when I moved to Detroit.

Beautiful close ups of Roger,Pete and Keith, but as usual the camera person is ignoring John.He is even wearing that weird skeleton suit to somehow not be ignored by the film photographer! So this film could be improved upon by including more glimpses of John!

The foreman over there hates the gang The poor people on the porch get it so rough The truck driver drives like a devil The policemen - they're acting so tough They need water Good, good water We need water And I'm sure there ain't one of us here Who'd say, "no" to somebody's daughter (No... no.... no... no... no...) Sampson seems sorta sweaty The draftsmen- they smudged their work The captain of a ship is swimming Then just wore off a keen bank clerk We need water Good, good water We need water And maybe somebody's daughter C'mon, gimme good water C'mon, gimme good water C'mon, gimme good water Please don't refuse me, mister I've seen your daughter at the oasis And I'm beginning to blister A Chevrolet just made steam Your crop is laying foul My grass skirt's lost its green I'm alive, but I don't know how We need water Good, good water We need water And maybe somebody's daughter Gimme good water Indian Lake is burnin' New York's skyline is hazy The River Thames is turnin' dry The whole world is a-blazin' We need water Good, good water We need water And maybe somebody's daughter Ah, gimme what I need Please, water, water, water, water, water, water Gimme water Water Water (Water...) And I'm sure there ain't one of us here Who'd say "no" to somebody's daughter (Oh, no) Whoa... No, no, no, no, no... No, whoa

I saw The Who for the first time in concert in July 1970, about a month before this performance. They were my favorite live band.

With good reason, they were the greatest live band in history at that time and they still are today. No one could come close to their power and talent because as we all know live at Leeds is the greatest live album ever.

The SG special remains the guitar by which Pete remains so identifiable. Its just too bad that Gibson ceased its production. Ditto for the Hiwatt DR103 that were top notch for sound and quality. I would love to see Pete play a show using vintage gear, with respect!

You and I can argue for days and days on several points on who is the greatest musician or on whom has the best solo. It will never reach a point to satisfy each other. I can tell you this some things can move you or it won't. I was never there, but some things move me. I appreciate something that moves me. I never thought a song could ever move me like this song in a way that could captivate me , keep me intrigued and forever change me. It's a life changing experience that I will never forget. Btw I never been to concert.

Saw this concert film in the late '90s in a movie theater in NYC and was struck by the thought that it was not only the best concert film ever, but that the Who of that vintage were probably rock's best-ever live band. Pretty sure I was right.
