There's two more tweaks that can make the Wii look even sharper over HDMI; disabling the de-flicker filter with priiloader and, if you have an early model Wii, using the "480p fix" (not needed for later Wii models)

It is so strange that the Wii is a retro console now, thanks for the video! BTW; You can use your phone’s camera to have a nice view of smaller components on a big screen, you can even stream it to a desktop monitor too. For example; NDI HX Camera app, it uses NDI to send video over network, but there a lot more apps for this too.

I didn't really find it to be that big of a difference when compared against component + OSSC combo. Mario Galaxy 2 also happens to automatically look correct in stereoscopic 3D. Dolphin supports SBS 3D in the settings, which will automatically work with any TV (or in my case digital projector) that supports DLP3D. As a novice I will say soldering the vias was the hardest thing I've done so far. I would recommend anyone who wants to do this to have a USB scope as mentioned or even a lighted magnifying glass so you can see through the holes of the flex pcb to the tinned vias when you're aligned. Took me flooding it with flux and trying it a couple times till all the pads had good connection but I got it in the end, very happy with the output and lack of added latency you get from external adaptors.

Original Xbox became retro when Xbox One launched. And finally, the Nintendo Switch is out, therefore the Wii is now retro. The GameCube became retro once the Wii U launched. The Limited vs full SRGB is not a night and day difference..its very subtle & doesn't hamper enjoyment of games on a modded Wii U. The controller (either pro or gamepad)on the Wii U is also much better than anything you can attach to an original Wii and makes the games more fun to play in my opinion. I've actually found tvs that still use the rca type and hdmi! The TV is made by a company called HI Sense. They are not the best TV on the market but they definitely have a beautiful resolution and I'd put it up there with Samsung no problem. RCA is another that always seems to have rca inputs. Just in case ppl would like a TV with all those options!!

There is actually a Wii2HDMI adapter that does not require any system modifications. It fits into the AV in thingy. I have found it very convenient.

This is always an issue with HDMI Wii mods. You try to look for one then they are out of stock or discontinued. Hopefully, there will be more in stock in the near future

4:49 You forgot to mention a bad spindle motor, the spindle motor on my Wii drive went bad, I ordered a new one from Aliexpress and replaced it and it reads fine now. it was of course making a horrible grinding noise after putting everything back together and I had to take it apart again and bend that little piece of metal that holds the spindle and now it is not making the grinding noise. The Wii optical drive is very easy to work on though and you should always try and repair it first before just ordering a drop in replacement.

I keep seeing people claim TVs don't have A/V ports, yet my cheap Roku and my LG OLED both have them... honestly, I haven't seen a TV in my local Walmart or Best Buy that don't have them.

I think you are confusing component with composite. Composite (red, yellow, white) is standard on just about every TV in existence. The video quality is very bad on composite. Component (Red, green, blue) on the other hand isn't very common. Most modern TV's don't offer a component connection. Even though it produces a much better picture than composite.

I would like to see a close-up on the pixels. Regular scale on KZfaq won't review the benefits of a digital versus an analog signal. Colors can be made to look very different depending on your display adjustments. I would like to see that with the N64 as well. Also compared to HDMI adapters, magnified.

If you're a die hard Wii fan, this is fine. But converting all your 480i/p systems to HDMI seems like overkill. I currently just run all of mine through the OSSC and use a component switch. GameCube games look unreal. And if you hack your Wii, you can turn off the "deflicker" on the system level for an even better picture. RetroTink should be fine too without having to convert to HDMI but it would be good to see a side by side.

You’d need a decent upscaler for a modern tv. The ossc can upscale the 480p signal to 1080p So imo mile may vary with this mod However it’s a great solution to get a modern signal out of the machine!

For the price buying a Wii U for a little more (not conting the Wii's price) is way more worth it as it will play most retro Nintendo console, you can play gamecube if you soft mod so even if the output is worse it's overall better

Cool mod! Back when I had a wii I used the component cables (nintendo ones too). Now a days ya you need, or must, have an hdmi output. I guess you could do a component to hdmi adapter if you needed to. The clear shell is cool too. I have clear joy con shells for my switch. EDIT: Yes I would enjoy a comparison video.

You couldn't be more right about a digital microscope. I bought a basic cheapo a couple years ago and it's more than paid for itself with being able to find bad solder joints or bridged fine pitch SMT component leads. Once I'm finished building my new workstation I'll invest in one that'll be tied in to my 22" monitor that I can pull out from the wall when I need to use it.

Personally, I think this hdmi converter is expensive and not enough for me to shell out 80 bucks. I bought an unnamed Chinese gadget that fits behind the Wii, I didn't expect image quality, I just wanted to connect the Wii to my modern TV, but I was surprised by the quality that thing provided. Vivid colors, upscale to 1080p, and somehow it reduces the game's jaggies with some kind of anti-aliasing. It cost 5 bucks.

Funny this video showing up now of all the times it could've. I just brought my Wii out of retirement. It has been sitting for 7 years. Plugged it in the other day. And it still works! But, since it's been so long. I no longer have games for it, or a sensor. Or even a Tv that can play it. So... I got some parts ordered. To clean it and get it back in a working order. As well as an upgrade, well... An adapter that converts the AV signal into a Digital one so I can use an HDMI. I mainly brought it back out as I remembered this very obscure game... Mad World. By Platinum Games, their first title. I was wanting to play it again as I have not seen it or heard of it in over 10 years. Pretty cool little game but sold very, very poorly. Probably due to it being exclusive to the Wii.

My HD TV comes with RCA and component cables so I don't have to take apart my Wii just to plug it in. I also have an RCA to HDMI adapter just in case I have a TV that doesn't support that. I don't like taking apart consoles if I don't have to and I am not very familiar with soldering. The only device I took apart was the PSP because there was all this gunk interfering with the buttons. The see through casing is pretty cool. The Wii is good at emulating GameCube games although I do have issues with N64 games.
