Informative video on the "wild camping bill" by Life is too short

/ savina.jayephillips.1
This is a video we have wanted to make for a while but quite frankly have never had the balls, it took meeting one man at a popular van life park up to provide the inspiration for this video.
I think because we both shared a strong passion for wildlife, the natural world and its rapid decline.
It may have been the vanlife that bought us together as well as ongoing problems with regards to parking within our community but what it showed me is if you put up a fight you may well be able to invoke a change, even if it's only a small one
We are often asked about the new wild camping laws and how other people disregarding our countryside is affecting our ability to travel freely, however we feel that the point is often missed and that it goes way further than where we can park for the night.
As we travel around this little country in our self converted campervan we are seeing more and more the destruction that the sheer volume of single use plastics can cause, and as well as hopefully raising a little awareness for the van communities current issues, we'd really like to hammer home the catastrophic impact the rubbish is also having on nature, those that can' defend themselves by filing their own petitions.
As always, thank you so much for watching and please feel free to share this video amongst your van life communities, we are uniquely placed to document, highlight and improve this awful situation. If enough of us shout loud enough, who knows, someone may just listen!

I like the fact that you point out how much plastic gets sent overseas to third world countries ! . The government authorities are to blame for misinformation to people about recyclable waste and where it ends up . Much of the plastic is not recyclable so it then sent overseas so it can be someone else's problem ! . Disgusting behaviour

I live in France, and I agree, but I also think there is a better attitude towards nature here, I lived in the UK for many years, and there's little or no respect for nature, I picked up alot of litter in the UK, but since living in france I've practically never seen any litter to pick up, a huge difference in mindset and attitude, I don't think it's only down to more recycling bins available.

We had a similar problem when we parked up in a beautiful layby in Wales for the night. Near a old slate quarry with a quaint little village at the bottom of the hill. During the evening and night some cars pulled in and stopped to admire the view and then toodled off on their way. Day break the next day we awoke to find the contents of someone's rubbish dumped outside right by our van door. We got the distinct impression that this was a 'set-up' by a local and probably a picture of sorts appearing in the local website exclaiming 'look what's happened again' !! . There was no bin in the layby so we scooped it all up and took it with with us. Did seem very odd.

This is fine by me and many others but there"s the small percent that unfortunately will just chuck the rubbish on the floor and its that small percentage that is inevitably going to ruin the hole camper van life style. also i agree the sheer mass of people now visiting these places is a massive contribution also . excellent video as usual keep up the good work

We stay at this park up for a night every couple of months (we live down by the river). It is a beautiful place, sunsets are amazing. Fabulous place to take the grandchildren too. Kieran is a lovely guy and has done a fantastic job of keeping the area clean & tidy and has added colour with the flowers. Why anyone would want to move him on is beyond me. Yes, lots of vans park there but they don't stay for more than a night or two and they definitely do not leave any rubbish. There is always plenty of parking for cars and most vans don't arrive until late in the evening anyway. I really cannot see why height barriers would be needed. Litter is a massive problem everywhere, people are just so selfish and lazy with no thought for anyone else or the local wildlife. It's both maddening and sad.

As an observation, I occasionally visit Mudeford quay, and many times I find heaps of rubbish just thrown out of both front windows. The culprits are generally youngsters in cars who got a take away and rather than use the bins or take it home they simply make a mess of a beautiful area and then drive off. The powers that be seem oblivious to the obvious and dislike campers, but it is erronious to say the least, campers are prepared for their own rubbish, kids in cars arent.

Cracking video Lou, well edited as always and very thought provoking. Litter in my opinion is it is everybody’s problem. Make litter picking mandatory for every Citizen similar to jury service, from 16-60 years of age everyone has to complete a full day of litter picking in a high visibility vest. It would then make it a public issue and pretty quickly stop 99% people littering in the future if they new at some stage they would have to pick up someone else’s rubbish.

Then I observed thereafter that every person put their rubbish in the skip. Reason being that if there is no rubbish on the ground they feel guilty that their rubbish is the only piece on the ground... Psychologically it works far better to have zero rubbish on the ground near bins.

I live in Stroud and know this place well. Many places are full of litter, and fly-tipping. I do not think it is laziness, I believe it is that people are so entitled, so lacking in consideration for others and the environment, that they see nothing wrong with leaving their litter. Whether it is eventually picked up or left there is irrelevant to them. These people consider themselves decent people who have done nothing wrong; they would be puzzled and offended if you called them anti-social scum. I would be quite in favour of a banning all plastic and cans of drink, whether beer or Pepsi. I was up at Selsley Common this evening, and a group of trail bikers rode as fast as they could along the narrow 'ridge-line' path, which is not even and contains numerous dips which hide walkers on the path from someone using the path in the opposite direction. The entitled bikers did not have the slightest consideration for other users (or dogs) on the path, and would have slammed into someone hidden by a dip. Trail bikers do the same on the canal tow path; max speed, no consideration for others. They are the same people as the litterers; entitlement and lack of consideration is normal behaviour now. Perhaps they should bring back some form of park warden; who can issue fines or take car registration numbers etc of litterers.

We have allowed generations to grow up with no respect or fear of prosecution for what is, ultimately, vandalism. If littering was dealt with as it is in Singapore there would be none. Along with fly-tipping (already a criminal offence) there needs to be much tougher action. To paraphrase my father, crime should pay!

This sounds so uneducted and naive, but truth be told living a van, I would love to know more about how I can lessen my garbage!! There are VERY FEW public bins AND RECYCLING bins around my city in Canada, disposing of my garbage is probably the ONE MAJOR STRESSOR in my vanlife, and of course such limited room in the van doesn't help! Please share how you help save the planet in your van! THANK YOU for being so conscientious and helpful!

I actually live in the valley below where you filmed this. Although I have not visited that particular park up for a number of years, when my Granddaughters were young it was a favourite place for picnics, Kite flying and even for watching the gliders in and out of the nearby gliding club. It does appear that of more recent years that the local council has to quite some degree neglected it's responsibility for it. It's not the campervan community that causes problems in these places but the casual users as you so rightly point out. Nevertheless, I am so sorry that your trip to this mostly beautiful part of the country was marred like this. What did you do with Emily, lock her in the camper ? 😬 Keep doing what you do so well.👍

In the 60's-70's the US had a huge litter problem throughout the country, parks and national forests. I remember the commercials featuring a Native American in traditional dress walking through fields of litter, with the closing scene showing his face with a single tear running down his cheek. "Stop Littering" / "Don't Be a Litterbug" / "Keep America Beautiful" became a huge national campaign that eventually worked. But it took YEARS for the cultural shift. Every few generations we must start again.

I remember traveling in a van in the 80-ties, beginning 90-ties in France also in Spain and also on Crete and in Morocco. It was the free life then, Parking on deserted beaches and all.It was the life...... Even without the solar power because back then we were not that power hungry. Because of that, when I needed a change in my life and chose to buy a {stealth} van, fitted with everything one needs to live off grid so I did. To be honest, I was shocked how people are using the land now. Totally selfish M#th#rf#ers are Spoiling their own lives! No respect for surroundings at all! It is not a surprise that in a lot of countries laws are being installed to get their land nice and clean again. So to be honest i am turning around and bought a sailboat.... The van is for sale....

To be honest I think one of the best ways to sort the problems is education, meaning while started primary school years ago we were told to respect nature and deal with your rubbish the right way . If we start from a young age part of the problems could be solved. It's s shame in these times this sort of education is done at school anymore because of money, costs .

Very powerful and also really sad! It's everyone's problem. And everyone (I use that term loosely - there is a tiny percentage that try so hard to fix this awful mess) thinks that someone is going to fix it. It is honestly so depressing. We are truly at a tipping point with the global environment. Single use plastics were the most evil thing ever invented. As a kid I remember my mum saying never to litter because we'd be nicked for it, it was a crime and truly putting the fear of God (...well the police and prison) into me. By my experience wild campers aren't the ones doing this. We have that mantra 'leave no trace', and many believe in that. Thank you for a beautiful and really well thought out video.

The entrance to my local park is just a couple of hundred yards away from my house. Apart from a couple of small car parks with height barriers, there is no vehicular access but the same problems exist. People who walk from surrounding dwellings, have their picnic, get up and walk away leaving all their rubbish. The answer is not more litter bins. I have only twigged since I started taking wildlife photographs that foxes, magpies and crows root through the bins looking for food, chucking out all the rubbish which is in the way. Local councils seem to have washed their hands of the responsibility for picking up after the sizeable minority who do litter. There are many volunteers who pick up around the local park but despite their best efforts they can't always keep on top of it. Single use plastics are the biggest headache. I've cut back so much that my recycle bin only goes out every six weeks. Myself and my neighbour pick up the litter on the green in front of our houses large green at the front of our houses. As for glow bugs and glow beetles, I haven't seen them since about 1973 in our local area. There are some success stories. It is not all gloom and doom. Chalkland orchids, some thought to be extinct, are making a comeback along with skylarks and other birds. Thank you for such a beautifully shot and thought provoking video.

Hi Lou, great video showing the impact that rubbish is having in terms of global as well as local. I really cannot understand the mentality of some people who chose to go to a nice place and then dump their rubbish, leaving others to clean up behind them. I think they are in the minority but their actions are affecting the majority. There is an elderly gentleman who is often seen picking up litter around our streets, its not that nice of an area but when i asked him why, he simply said you should have pride in where you live, to me that includes the UK. I understand what the guy who lives there is doing but sadly to some folk it will encourage them also to dump their rubbish as well.

How come the people in Parliament couldn't see this back then. ( We used to wrap our sandwiches in wonder loaf packaging . Someone brought theirs in a Tupperware box which started the conversation .)

I will be very happy if my channel gets anywhere near as polished as yours. I love the drone footage especially. I have bought a drone for mine and starting as I mean to go on, I got my A2 CofC and GVC and CAA Operational Authorisation. Now I need to learn video editing… wish me luck. As he uses Lightroom and PS he gave Premium Pro a try. Sadly the share option is not available until you start paying £19.95 a month. Gulp! He is now using Davinci Resolve 18 which is truly amazing and completely free. There are some great tutorial videos on KZfaq. He recently found and area called Studio.KZfaq and that has thousand of royalty free backing tracks. Some a completely open for use and a number require you to post and acknowledgment which is easy to do. They give you the wording required.

@@sandraheald7073 Thank you so much for your very kind reply. I’ll be voting on board narrowboat Bob this Friday and starting a channel very soon afterwards. I have Davinci Resolve and I’ve bookmarked lots of how to videos for how to use it and create efficient workflows. I’m developing ideas for content too. I’ll change my KZfaq name for the new channel when I launch it. Again, thank you for you very kind words and encouragement. 😁

Your best video yet! This is absolutely not political. It is necessary for preserving life. We must protect our environment before we end up killing off all wildlife. Without pollinators there will be an extremely limited food supply.

Great video Lou, this is a global issue, even in our beautiful New Zealand we have our share of people who won’t recycle, we do have a ban on single use ‘plastic bags’ and this has been adopted and introduced here and is, in my opinion a great start. Occasionally I will pull up - no MH till December- in my car in a beauty spot to walk Mr Bentley, our dog, and come across litter strewn across the place, it breaks my heart that someone thought it was okay to do that. But more and more people of all ages are starting to understand the importance of recycling and using ‘keep cups, reusable water bottles, shopping bags. It’s an educational journey and one day it will be in our nature to love our planet again.

I really hope so, you do see more people using keep stuff which is great 👍 let's hope it keeps heading in that direction

Excellent video loved it….. A couple of months ago I went for a bike ride around my local countryside and on the edge of a very quiet country road someone had dumped a full bathroom!! Bricks, toilet, bath and more unbelievable. It’s obvious that the fines/punishments are not steep enough to discourage some people and perhaps a doubling of fines and sentences is needed ?

If you're sleeping in a van you aren't wild camping. If you're driving to a parking spot and pitching a tent you aren't wild camping. If you don't take all your crap out with you you aren't wild camping. Wild camping is carrying your gear into the country on your back or your bike (or your horse if you must), pitching your tent for the night and leaving in the morning without leaving any traces

Good on yer for speaking out, the few ruin it for the majority. Single use plastics are banned here in Queensland from the 1st September this year. Stay safe cheers from Australia 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

Yes but many regional councils dont have recycling available in Qld. It all goes in the general rubbish. There is so much waste that could be sorted especially in the nursing home where I am visiting my mum. So sad.

Hi, I only now found your channel. Nice one.. I had a go at a woman, a few hours ago, for dropping litter. She looked at me as if I was speaking a different language. Then got in her van and drove off, with zero fxxxs given. Bloody people.

Brilliant unbiased video Lou!! Not sure how that guy has managed to be left alone to stay parked up there, but more power to him and hope they don't push to get him kicked off. He is obviously a benefit to the local environment more than long term locals!!

In the 1970s the government had a massive advertising campaign on tv which taught my generation not to throw out rubbish, however it didn’t show us about recycling. It’s a pity we’re losing our rights to freedom to roam where we wish.

Awesome video Lou I think the recycling thing same as heavy industries are being shipped overseas out of sight so at a glance things look greener and cleaner but in reality the filth is still there just somewhere else and probably with far less safety and environmental checks making the whole thing worse than before. To be honest I don’t see much rubbish dumped where I park up I’m in New Zealand so obviously less folk to make waste and the folk who do this life on wheels thing are in the main very tidy they don’t seem to abuse their park ups. Saying that folk in smaller vans mainly tourists tend to get a lot of bad press for soiling areas because apparently the van hire companies incentives them not to use their on board facilities so they go bush etc. I’ve been in my van three years now couldn’t imagine living full time in a house again love this lifestyle with a passion and am encouraging my last born to try it for a while between his studies 🚐🚐 travel well mate regards Paul
