Fun fact, in French Canadian tradition, the version of The Wild Hunt is called "La Chasse-galerie", and it involves a flying canoe, lumberjacks, rum, a deep snowbank, and possibly the most dedicated booty call of all time. Seriously. I'm not even joking.

Devils jobs are to punish sinners. They may hate God, but they do not love Man. They are, if not the cops, then the executioners. So, expect them to speak harshly to any rule breakers. They're not kidding. They have a license to damn.

One of my class used to sing a French song about the knights of the round table, after arriving at the decision that they needed to check the quality of the wine. The song moves into a verse of every knights increasingly drunker escapes, ending with them concluding that the wine is good But they ougth to taste another barrel, just to be sure.

This sounds very much like a Christianized story of the fae, with "Friar" substituted for whatever "pagan" figure it originally was, and the Devil replacing a fae. If you look at the events, there was a fair exchange at first of fae-wine/fae-mead for the pick of the hunt. The "Devil" didn't take all of the game, either. Just the best ones. If the friar figure has let it go as a done deal, I doubt anything bad would have happened; and from similar stories of the fae, he just might have found himself in an equable deal for their wine/mead for some of his hunting take.

The story of the Wild Hunt preceding Christianity seems very likely indeed.
@kevinbailey9981
@kevinbailey9981 Ай бұрын
It is. However, the christianized version tends to focus more on the character flaws of the friar than the specific situation between him and the devil. Like a lot of christianized stories, the moral is more about the dangers of excess, as well as not looking out for others.

i want to hear you do the Japanese version, the Hyakki Yako, thousand demon parade. its when the yokai all go out together to dance and party across the countryside. and yokai can get pretty damn destructive. so you can be sure it was a rager. Japanese mythical beasts can get pretty bizzare, which is why I fell in love with them when I was introduced to them as a teenager.

This might just be the origin story of "(Ghost) riders in the sky", about the most country music song ive ever heard. Could just be a coincidence, but the resounding vocals and lyrics of the song (at least the versions ive heard) are really quite stunning and emotionally engaging. Interesting how stories could change, from devils appearing in the sky to cowboys on an infinite hellish ride after the ghostly cattle.

holy gods, it's really impressive to think of Friar Dando, who had chosen such an exaggerated life, it was a lifestyle that was already unacceptable for a farmer or a noble, but for a friar it was the least that ended up like that. it's really good here, the famous saying "better alone than in bad company". or in Dando's case "better alone, than infernal company" (if Friar Dando's fate was already sealed when he drank the "drink" of the mysterious horseman, arguing because the "foreigner" had made him "pay" for the drink, I would actually say "from bad to worse", perhaps he just anticipated " the one-way flight")

1) There are a lot of hands stories and concepts like this. It doesn't mean they are made to represent the same figures. 2) The Devil, aka "The Accuser," like most uses of demons in contemporary art, represents the destrictive aspects of the friars' personality as a stand-in for the destruction we're all capable of wether it's our self or others. It only makes sense that the friars lack awareness regarding those around leads to his downfall.
