Acoustic cover of the Abba song The Winner Takes It All. This wasn't originally meant for KZfaq, I done it for a girl in work (Viv), who's learning to play guitar. But decided to put it on anyway. I'm sporting a fetching pair of new grey pyjamas for this one. I'm sure Kurt Cobain owned a set.... ps had to delete the original version of this because it was grainy for some reason.

In it's simplicity, this is quite beautiful. You remind us that this song is not about a heroic triumph, but rather an unavoideble defeat. It sounds very genuine!

Look Andy, I have add this video on my favorites for long years ago... For the first time I feel confortable to say... You are not the best player, you don't have the most perfect voice, but... This version of this music... Is the must perfect that someone could record in a video. I know that it is from 8 years ago or more, you probable improved on the guiter and everything more, but, this moment... this moment... you shined my friend. Hey Andy, I'm a beginner as well. I wanted to learn this song straight away and when I looked up the chords and tried to play it, it sounded something shocking. I couldn't get it sounding right! So I went in search of a helpful video... then I found yours and progressively watched it 20 times haha. Your version has helped me so much with the strumming and the little touches you added, I really love it. And you have a such a beautiful voice! The fetching pyjamas work well also ;)

Andy McMahon Yep! it's fantastic I really love the song too so it's nice to be able to play it properly. I can play a few songs now.. some Pete Murray tunes, I will survive - Gloria Gaynor ( oh yeah!), Cat Stevens - father and son and John Denver - annies song. My fingers are callusing up nicely now ;) very attractive. I like your guitar too it sounds really good. I think I need new strings, or just my own guitar maybe haha. I'm currently using my mums one.. it's ancient. She got it in 1977 for her 16th birthday :P It's small though which suits my small fingers!

So I apologize ( no pun intended) if i've missed another version but I have spent the last 20 mins looking for a cover that I feel does justice to the song. There are some people out there who are excellent musicians / vocalists. Every single one of them (for me) missed completely. This is an astonishing song and I always felt ABBA overplayed it with the production. This should never have been big and histrionic. Its not Adele. It is one of the saddest songs I have ever heard and it touches me deeply. But there are so many overblown versions of this. I will say this as no word of a lie. I consider this to be the best version of this song I have heard to date. Simple, plaintive, emotional. You have truly recorded a great version here. I congratulate you.

Just watched a bunch of ‘winner takes it all’ covers and they’re all like good quality but nothing amazing, yet here u are mate with shit quality yet u have that distinctive but yet great voice and rhythm with the guitar, best by far.

Thanks Cartana. The problem with the strumming pattern, is that I’m not classically trained on Guitar, I just learned a chord at a time really. I was never shown strumming patterns or scales or anything like that. So I basically listen to a song and play the rhythm that I feel it warrants. So all I can suggest is you watch the video and try and pick it up from that. The problem you have is I don’t always touch the strings when I move my hand, I use my strumming hand to keep rhythm. And only actually play the strings when needed (if that makes sense). So I basically couldn’t tell you what the strumming pattern is. I just do it. Sorry I couldn’t be more help. Andy
