Saw the 1977 version with Eric Porter first and thought it was magnificent. All versions are good but the 1948 has to be the definitive version. I wondered, if the boy were innocent would he not have ran to his father to plead his innocence as opposed to hiding and reluctant to enter the house for fear of his father's anger. In other words he would have been reluctant to enter the house if he were guilty.

Oh no! It misses out the great line at the end when Sir Robert leaves the room. "I'll take the case, the boy is clearly innocent." Thanks for posting!

This scene always gets to me. No matter how many times I've watched it over the last 30 years and knowing there's a reason Sir Robert does this, it doesn't erase the pain in watching Ronnie's quivering lip, eyes welling up, the desperation and panic in his features. The poor kid. A great actor in Neil North who did the title role here. He even appeared in the '99 remake. Thanks for posting.

I don't know why Robert Donat won awards for his performances in other films but not for this one. For me it's probably his best performance. I watched the original `Goodbye Mr. Chips' (1939) and while Donat was good in the film he wasn't stunning like he was in `The Winslow Boy' imo.

Honestly I don't know why he didn't win an Oscar for The Winslow Boy but I can tell for Goodbye Mr Chips he showed his true versity as an actor playing a 25 year old in the beginning of the movie to a 84 year old. Honestly he deserves to win Oscar for most of his movies I love his choice of movies and he gives the fullest in his performance. Personally a big fan of Donat ❤️

This is based on a real case; The real prosecutor portrayed by Robert Donat was called Sir Edward Carson. In this case he was a hero but several years before he had prosecuted Oscar Wilde... ... On a more positive note Margaret Leighton was gorgeous in this film!

I am watching another version of this story on KZfaq. It has Eric Porter as Father and Alan Badel as Sir Robert. Excellent.

funwithFred Fred, I hope you're still around 3 years later. This film is on the magnificent talking pictures channel tomorrow 9 August 2017 at 7pm. I would imagine that this is just available in the UK on sky, virgin and freeview.

What is not mentioned here is that this is based on a true story about George Archer-Shee (6 May 1895 - 31 October 1914) who was a Royal Navy cadet whose case of whether he stole a five-shilling postal order was decided in the High Court of Justice in 1910. Archer-Shee was successfully defended by barrister and politician Sir Edward Carson. The trial, which became a British cause célèbre, was the inspiration for the 1946 Terence Rattigan play The Winslow Boy, which has been the basis of two films. Following his acquittal, the boy's family was paid compensation in July 1911. Archer-Shee was commissioned in the British Army in 1913, and killed aged 19, at the First Battle of Ypres on 31 October 1914. Sad he was killed at such an early age.

Margaret Lewfatt - who posted this clip - has missed the WHOLE POINT by clipping the 'punch-line'. The point is that after all the traumatic cross-examination, Sir Robert takes the case as he believes the boy to be innocent. I hope Margaret Lewfatt will repost the clip in its entirety. I would myself except that I don't have the entire film. The excerpt makes no sense otherwise.

Quite right. A member shouldn't upload a 2 minutes and 48 seconds clip from an important and much longer scene in a film such as this classic on the basis that any old 2 minutes and 48 seconds clip from it will do, because it won't. I have the DVD of the film and would upload the complete scene myself, but I have no idea how to upload the DVD onto my Laptop, edit it and then upload the scene to KZfaq. This upload has been badly done and is in rather low image resolution.

Daniele Iannarelli I expect it was uploaded as a bit of a teaser without the "spoiler" at the end, for those who don't know the film or play.

I feel sorry for the thousands and thousands of innocent that have plead guilty in our courts, that have been sentenced as guilty....I feel sorry for them all. I feel sorry for all those people that know this goes on, and stand by and do nothing. Google Kids for Cash...oh please.

Indeed I have seen all 4 film versions and read the play in high school, but I've never known if Rattigan intended the play to be a love story at the end. I'm convinced that the attention drawn by young Donat and Northam in the movies obscure the fact that the play is about the father, the lead actor.

Why on earth post this without including the infamous 'the boy is clearly innocent' line? Criminal.

Actually I think the poster has deliberately left out Donats closing comments. If viewers on here then were to watch the movie, the element of surprise is still very much intact..
