In Robert Eggers debut The Witch, a family in 1600's New England is forced to survive on a remote farm and finds their faith constantly tested, which is only made worse by supernatural forces that invade their life. We're breaking down the story and its themes, along with including references to real life beliefs of the time, and explaining the ending and what our character's big choice means.

I think the film also illustrates how being falsely accused can ultimately create what was never there in the first place.

Not necessarily, she wasn’t falsely accused. She was the first to introduce the idea that she was a witch to scare her sister. And anytime a character does something bad in this movie they sorely pay for it.

she was a witch dude - the coven didn't just accept her right there at the end, that's not how it works - more than likely her family was the price with the baby being the initial offering and sacrifice.

Yeah, I think it was meant to be part of the process to turn her to the devil. I have the distinct feeling she was the intended target. The devil turned her family mad and to a certain degree, her too effectively making her lose her entire family, leaving her alone and thus very vulnerable otherwise she might not have accepted his guidance.

A major thing I noticed is that in the very beginning Thomasin had her hair nicely tucked under her Bonnet. But as the film progresses and more sinful acts were shown as well as the bad luck, her hair became more and more unkempt. Her hair symbolized her slow descent from Puritan to Witchcraft. Amazing!

If so, then I’d guess Pride: the dad Envy: the mom (yes it’s gross, but I think she kept accusing her of seducing her brother because she was jealous of her youth) Greed: the main chick (her “earthly desires) Lust: older boy Wrath: twin a Sloth: twin b Gluttony: the baby By the way this list is probably totally wrong. I haven’t even seen the movie,mi just watched a review of it. If I had to guess, these would be the sins.

The best detail here is when Black Phillip asks her if she sees the book. They cut to it and we see two steps. The first is Black Phillip's hoof, the next is the black leather, spurred boot of the devil as he takes a human shape, erasing the hoof from the frame as his cloak swipes across it. So effective and unsettling.

ITS ONE OF THE COOLEST SCENES FROM ANY MOVIE I HAVE SEEN. LIKE, YOU MAY HAVE QUESTIONED WHETHER IT WAS ACTUALLY THE DEVIL OR JUST WITCH MAGIC UP UNTIL THAT POINT, BUT I HAVE NEVER SEEN A COOLER CURTAIN PULL EVER IN ANY OTHER FORM OF STORYTELLING AS WHEN THEY SHOW YOU THAT BLACK PHILLIP WAS THE DEVIL HIMSELF THAT WHOLE TIME, WITH NO WAY TO QUESTION IF IT IS TRUE. AND THEN WHEN HE SAYS "I WILL GUIDE THINE HAND", IT JUST GIVES ME CHILLS EVERYTIME. HE KNEW HE HAD WON.

Twins: Sloth and Wrath Thomasin: Greed, in the end Caleb: Lust Despite the movie is obviously about sin, that each one IS a sin, it makes them talking about everyone born a sin more poignant.

No, you misinterpreted a key component of the plot. Witches weren't said to be killing small children just to be able to fly around at night. There was a separate belief altogether about their ability to fly. According to both Puritanical and Protestant beliefs in the 17th century, witches were women wanting to live forever while also retaining their former beauty from youth- they wanted to be 800 yrs old without ever looking 800 yrs old. The belief among Christians at the time was that witches sacrificed and consumed children to rewind the clocks of their own lives. Simply put, the younger the sacrifice, the younger you are made in return. It's absolutely critical to understand this key distinction in the story because the driving force behind this film's plot was Satan compelling the vulnerable to sign their souls over to him to set in motion an endlessly repeating cycle of evil as he sits and watches from the sidelines. Despite signing their souls over to the devil, witches didn't want to endure God's judgement and serve their punishments in Hell either. The witches and the Satanists were just as terrified of eternal damnation as the Christians were. With a constant desperation to live as long as possible so that they delay their eventual punishments in Hell, Satan is setting in motion a repeating cycle of fear, misery, grief, and hardship among his subjects where they will constantly be ratcheting up their wickedness in order to escape death and damnation. Satan is demonstrating that humanity is so inherently deficient that they'll carry out grievous acts of evil as long as you tempt them with insignificant matters such as a more comfortable lifetime while here in the physical world. Satan is effectively demonstrating that humanity is so inherently flawed and inferior that they'll destroy themselves without him (Satan) ever having to lift a finger.

This movie portrayed the devil as a deceiver and liar in a very impressive way. The Devil asks Thomasin if she wanted to see the world, wanted the taste of butter, and if she wanted a pretty dress. We never see the witches leaving the forest, wearing anything (except for arguably two times that involved magic) , and the only thing we see them consume is blood. What was important was that Thomasin added her name to his book, not that he delivered on their deal.

This movie was a breath of fresh air for the "scary" movie genre. It was incredibly well executed and is captivating as long as you are prepared to watch. Don't expect worn out jump-scares and overplayed themes from The VVitch (The Witch), as this isn't your typical Friday-night scary movie. I don't know if high-class horror is a thing, but if it is, The VVitch (The Witch) easily takes that title. Every aspect of this movie exudes tantalizing aspects of history and folklore that were clearly and intentionally crafted together to give the viewer an overall sense of looming fear and constant nervousness. Overall, this is a beyond excellent and wonderfully made scary movie that easily lands the #2 spot on my top 5 scary movie list. As a self-proclaimed scary movie connoisseur, you can be assured that I recommend this movie to other friends who have a high-grade taste in film. I recommend that anyone who enjoys darker movies to give this film a chance. Put the kids to bed, put your phone down, get comfortable, and enjoy a delightfully dark trip into the nearly-forgotten past. You won't regret it!

I bought the limited edition 4k collection of The Witch that was released yesterday. I watched the special features and I was surprised to hear that Robert Eggers thought his own film was overrated and didn't expect it to as well as he thought. He ran into so many problems during production due to budget issues and he hated the filming location. By the end of filming, he just wanted it to be over and hoped he could make enough money to get another project. Little did he know that this film would become successful and actually jumpstart his career.

I consider myself a horror connoisseur and out of all of the horror masterpieces out there, this film is my favorite. I am a huge history buff and I love how historically accurate it is. I appreciate how the film displays 17th-century Puritan views of witchcraft, original sin, predestination, fear and condemnation of female sexuality, and so on. Unlike most recent horror films, The Witch doesn't rely on a supernatural character or villain. Instead, the family sows the seeds of their own self-destruction through ignorance, mistrust, pride, arrogance, and fear. The subsequent events only serve to reaffirm the beliefs, suspicions, and doubts that the parents (especially the mother) already had surrounding their oldest daughter (a blossoming young woman whose sexuality was seen as a threat ). This family never stood a chance as "The Devil" sensed the turmoil, doubt, and disbelief rampant in this family. As a result, it was easy for him to infiltrate the family through the naive children (those with the weakest faith) and then move on to his next victims. If you observe, each family member was picked off in order of their piety (or lack thereof ). This reflects the belief of the time that those who were weak in their faith were more susceptible to evil. Lastly, this film stands out to me because it displays widespread fears and beliefs that surrounded witchcraft and the devil at the time and manages to be scarier than any other horror film set in modern times. It goes to show you just how terrified 17th-century Americans must have been of witchcraft. It makes it easier to understand why people could have so easily been whipped up into a frenzy during the Salem witch trials. Food for thought.........

I fucking love The Witch. It's such a good depiction of the human condition and how someone responds to their environment and culture. I don't really like witch movies that ham up the magic or the horror. I like how The Witch ends with a touch of the supernatural, and it's not the main focus of the movie.

The 1st person to be executed for witchcraft was Alise Young in 1647 in Hartford, Connecticut. Life and faith was so much like the first half of this movie. I've heard theories that the whole family are suffering from ergot poisoning from the poor crop or their dwindling store, it was highly likely they were growing rye, as that was what was common. Ergot poisoning gets scarier until death, its what LSD was created from. Lots of hallucinations, bizarre behavior, even violence.

I always wondered if this was a play on the Seven Sins to some degree. Caleb = Lust (lusts after Thomasin and the witch in the forest) Father = Pride (refuses to admit there's issues and steals his wife's silver to stay where they are) Mother = Wrath (blames everyone for the situation in an angry manner and screams at her family and Thomasin routinely for the loss of her baby) Thomasin = Greed/Envy (she wanted something more and ultimately succumbs to this sin towards the end) Children = Gluttony (constantly eating more than they require and are clearly the fattest in the family) Sloth don't really seem to be at play here (although interestingly this is one of the most abstract and undefined sins), but you could argue the family was all guilty of committing a deadly sin which may have been what allowed the power for the black goat to exercise his power and control over the family and ultimately corrupt.
