In 17th-century New England, a devout Christian family are banished from their plantation. They relocate to a humble farm situated on the edge of a dense forest to live a life of self-sufficiency. With the elements taking their toll and food growing scarce, the family are thrown into despair when their youngest child inexplicably goes missing. As they hunt desperately for the lost child, tensions and paranoia breeds within the family and the growing belief that a supernatural force is at work slowly leads them to turn on each other. Taking place decades before the infamous Salem witch trials of the 1690s, Robert Eggers’ (Best Director, Sundance Film Festival) gruelling tale of hysteria and sorcery is a profoundly unsettling and visionary work, capturing the unrelenting bleakness of its period setting with uncompromising conviction. Often terrifying, although by no means a traditional horror film, this hellish descent into madness is a cruel, sometimes enigmatic and entirely singular experience.

One of the best horror films of all time: if I had to rank my favorites; 1.) The Thing (1982) 2.) The VVitch (2015) 3.) The Fog (1980) 4.) Misery (1990) 5.) Don't Look Now (1973) 6.) The Stepford Wives (1975) 7.) The Wicker Man (1973) 8.) The Blair Witch Project (1999) 9.) Eraserhead (1977) 10.) Lake Mungo (2008) special mention: The Shining (1980) *not a Kubrick film I particularly like, but it is so incredibly well-made, I think it's certainly a milestone Side note: Eggers has amazing hair. Wish I had hair like that lmao.

I mean the witch was good, but it wasn’t fantastic. The first 40 minutes of the movie relatively nothing happened, but the last 50 minutes were good.

@@hdbuckets8154 disagree entirely. if there weren’t all that build-up, the last half of the movie wouldn’t be nearly as exciting. it’s like the shining, it’s all about getting inside your head and inflicting a looming sense of paranoia in order to keep its viewer uneasy from start to finish. also, there are few period pieces that are as accurate and stunning as the witch, period. it’s also a film that gets better upon repeated viewings. horror needs to be more subtle these days, 98% of horror films should take note. it’s a masterpiece of acting, writing, costume design, production design, directing and visual storytelling.

@@kyleplatz6295 well if the witch is your #2, then the lighthouse is an infinitely insane masterpiece.

@@hdbuckets8154 I think I still prefer the clear-cut structure of The Witch, but The Lighthouse is undoubtedly an excellent movie. Definitely my favorite film of 2019. I wouldn't consider it a horror film though.
