I'm a father to a young daughter. I absolutely love that a group of men crafted a story where you get the "good" ending by being a good father to your daughter. Specifically because they chose to define being a good father as having faith in your daughter's strength, and using that faith to give her the gift of faith in herself.

This video is misinformed, the reason Gerald is special is because his mother cast a spell on him before he was taken by the monks, the spell kept him alive thru the trial, and allowed him to keep his emotions, which he had to control and keep secret. His mother was a mage.

@@TechManPat this is not cannon, I believe it comes from the Polish film? In the books it's shown to be just another piece of "those mutant freaks" anti-witcher propaganda. Every witcher in the books had very clear emotions.

Geralt didn't choose the name Geralt of Rivia. He picked Geralt Roger Eryk du Haute-Bellegarde, but thankfuly Vesimir kicked it out of his head.

Funnily enough, when he and his gang wound up participating in The Battle for the Bridge in Angren - he was actually knighted as Geralt of Rivia by queen Meve. It's nice that in witcher 3 this is aknowledged in B&W dlc when participating at the tourney.

Lolol, this actually made me laugh. But technically Witchers don't really kidnap children and turn them into Witchers, that's a myth the common folk made up. I'm not certain how they acquire children for their order. Maybe they take in orphans and foundlings who would otherwise starve to death on the streets? I like to think of the Witchers as generally good even if they have their flaws, so I don't believe they kidnap kids. Geralt I know was left at Kaer Morhen by his mother and raised by Vesemir to become a Witcher.

@@prujckn2586 It's explained fairly well in the books, although they left it fairly ambiguous in the games for whatever reason. As another comment mentioned, Witchers invoke the Law of Surprise-- stating that, rather than gold, what their client first finds at home but does not expect will be what the Witcher claims as their reward-- in these cases a child. From this law flows the ever present theme of destiny throughout the Witcher series, as these children are now bound by fate to travel the Witcher's path. Furthermore, it is one of the most determinate factors in the paucity of Witchers. As one can foresee, this barrier, disregarding the fact that only four in ten of these children survive the trial of the grasses, precludes the Witchers from easily rebuilding their order.

@@matthewdingman3967 he already died long ago and i am deep in game now . The tree spirit looked suspicious . But i found the basement in the house and found blood , ritual , skulls , etc early in the game ; so those witches looked way more suspicious so i sided with tree .

Don't be sad, Sad ending is not actually sad. Ciri leaves this world for a better one and new adventure, just like in books. Sad ending is actually better than other two. Other two are selfish endings

I got the best ending in my 1st playthrough. Ciri became a witcher. Nilfgaard wins. Roche lives. Temeria becomes an independent state under Nilfgaard. I chose the lady to be queen of Skellega. I could not be any happier.

This isn't a complete timeline. Far from it, considering that most of the events in the books were left out. Only a few were included. Also she's wrong about "Geralt continuing to ghost her" part, considering they got back together again and lived together for some time in Tretogor.

It's one of those life decision games where you can get a happy ending or a sad ending. If you've played Zelda Breath of the Wild, it's pretty much the same. Collect the memories or you'll end up either forgetting Zelda or remembering.

This is however strongly against the nature of the world the Witcher saga takes place in. Sapkovsky even wrote a mocking short story where Geralt marries Yennefer and they go to live together with Ciri, basically mocking the fact that it will never happen.

For those who want it chronologically: 1. Duny (Emhyr) was cursed, apparently since birth. (This wasn't actually true, but it's irrelevant.) 2. Duny and Pavetta fell in love. 3. Geralt lifts Duny's curse and asks for child of surprise. Pavetta was pregnant (with Ciri). 4. Geralt initially refuses Ciri, ends up with her again, and decides to take her to Kaer Morhen anyway. He also learns that she is a Source (has Elder Blood or whatever). 5. Yennefer trains and tutors Ciri in magic, to try and harness her power. I think Triss does too. 6. Ciri becomes Yen and Geralt's adopted child. 7. Lots of time passes. 8. Geralt is killed with a pitchfork, Yen resurrects him. 9. Ciri creates special island for them, and goes off into another dimension. 10. Wild Hunt appear and kidnap Yennefer (to lure Ciri out). 11. Geralt joins Hunt in return for Yen's freedom. 12. Later, he somehow escapes, and returns to witchering, with no recollection of Yen or Ciri. 13. Witcher 1 game begins. Witcher 2 happens. Geralt regains memory. Witcher 3 happens.

The island is not created but exists as a multiverse of the old sagas where King Arthur ruled over Camelot. Minor detail but Sapkowskij loves to mix in other myths and stories in his books.

No.10 wild hunt kidnap yennefer to lure the child of elder blood(he dont know the exact identity of ciri in which he kidnapped every child with young age every year) but Geralt joined wild hunt for exchange of yennfer.. No.12 ciri saved geralt from wild hunt but his memory was completely erased{like the child’s kidnapped by wild hunt for his test subjects returned to world with no memory}which was mentioned in Act 3 of witcher 3 game.This is where wild hunt detected ciri was the last elder blood and thus the hunt for ciri begins,while geralt was recovering his memory through the events of witcher 2 And witcher 3 begins to save ciri from wild hunt since she was like daughter to geralt and also she saved his ass twice before the events of witcher 1 and 2. SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH

I think it's fine if you make enough of the right calls all throughout the game to support her independence. Some of them are kinda dumb so I'm glad CDPR gave players some leeway with em.

I'm late I know, but I just wanted to say that if you don't help assassinate Radovid Emhyr loses the war and Ciri won't become empress. So that's probably why you didn't get the ending

If you don't kill either Radovid or Dijkstra, and take her to see Emhyr she still becomes a witcher and Emhyr loses his kigdom. If they are both dead and you took her to see him, then Emhyr is unstoppable and she goes with him. So... You must've spared Dijkstra or Radovid.

I had the ending where Ciri died and Geralt got her Medallion back. I swear that was one of the most depressing endings I ever experienced I didn't even want to replay the game because i was so bummed out

i also got this ending. I now realize that i might be a bit TOO stern when I care for someone which is how i got this ending. so now, I try to show a bit more empathy and fun especially when that person is going through something. what an insanely amazing game tho, i think i got 2 of the needed 3 to get a good ending so i replayed that bit to achieve a happy ciri ending 😆

If you do the Hearts of stone DLC and you side with GoD, i think he tells you that Ciri is not dead, she just doesnt want to see you anymore 💀. Which is worse

yongo implied this but she was never necessarily shown as straight dead, just didn't come back to Geralt. Likewise Geralt didn't necessarily die, the end was left ambiguous. Realistically this does mesh with the grander tone of the witcher lore imo, though the happy endings certainly feel better.

I feel the bad ending may just be the best one in a very twisted way. It's certainly the most dramatic and impactful one. And the symbolism of the monsters crawling in while geralt holds the medallion is just beautiful. Or maybe I'm just in denial because I got that ending.

As someone who loves the games and the books, I do think that the games missed a lot of important things that made the story special for example Yen & Ciri’s mother-daughter relationship. The games didn’t showcase how much Ciri used to love Yen, Ciri used to called Yen “mother” she even wanted her name to be “Ciri of Vengerberg the daughter of Yennefer” . Also Triss isn’t even that important in the books (also she isn’t good), Yen & Ciri are more important yet they only appeared in one game

They dont focus on yennifer because unlike the books the games are 100% geralt story and in his pov (even ciri is playable so nonbookreaders feel as emocionaly invested as geralt)so again unlike the books it doesn't focus on them as a "family" it focus on yennifer as geralts lover and ciri as geralts daughter it doesn't show yennifer and ciris relashionship because it's not necessary and it's not about geralt,and about your second point:yes,so what? CD can focus on diferent characters if they want they are not enslaved by the books,also that gives them more creative freedom

Mackson edinis yeah but Yennefer & Ciri relationship is so important and big part of the books and Ciri growing up (cause like it reached a point where Ciri started to act like Yen) to be honest, “personally” while reading the books I never felt the father-daughter relationship because Ciri spent a lot of time away from Geralt. Also yeah CD can focus on whatever they want but they changed Triss’s personality (I’m just saying this because some gamers hate Yen and they don’t know why she acts the way she does and they don’t really know Triss and what she’s done)

@@sone2028 yeah ciri is important more important than geralt but if you look the trilogy as a whole it's geralts story proof:you don't see her confronting the white frost and even what she says "what do you know about saving the world ..." because your job isnt to save the world your job is to suport her and if you do your job well she lives if you doesnt she dies,that is one thing that is awsome the witcher is a games where the player is Not the chosen one a world where he is Not the most important person in the world,about triss i think is a matter of perspective would you know how manipulative and what she did in the books if you only saw through geralts point of view,and if something changed in her personality is tha she is more confident what makes sense after the books

Mackson edinis well in the books she tries to give Ciri to Lodge of Sorceresses(which is bad), going against Geralt & Yen...in another words she does what’s best for her and doesn’t care about others even if those people were her best friends. She kept seducing Geralt, so he slept with her but afterwards he felt bad about it and said that he won’t do it again. So she isn’t really the great character some people think she is and I’m not saying Yen is perfect cause she’s not but Yen does everything to protect the people she loves cause she never experienced love as a child plus she always wanted a family that’s why in the game she obsessed with finding Ciri

You know why Tolkien fans LOVED LotR? i for one watched it a dozen times. Because it is lovingly faithful to the source material. And they had common sense to hire at least some elves that look like elves (though Elrond Smith and Galadhriel were a miscast, great actors as they are).

I beat the game, and both DLC's a month sgo, so I could get ahead of the show, thanks to that, I'm a Witcher lore scholar, and a MAJOR Gwent addict. Geralt's the man, Ciri is my girl, Triss is my lady, but Yenefer is my woman, and essentially my wife for life!

My first play through of the witcher wild hunt I got the ending where geralt and ciri go about witchering together and I was in salt happy after playing through it a few more times I can thoroughly say my first play through was the best killing radived, romancing yennefer, becoming a father daughter witcher duo with ciri and finally living happily ever after in tousiant was the best ending for the series. 10/10 would recommend if you have never played the games or read the books.

They needed some of this explanation in the Netflix series mainly about the Spheres and the worlds meshing and about the elves and humans it would really set up viewers to understand what the heck is going on.

But that's not really important to the story when you think about it. Heck, only the elves really know what happened during that time (yeah humans have their own stories but the elves i think have it more fleshed out). Watching the series all I know is that there was a time when spheres collided and then elves, dwarves(?), humans, and monsters found out they were all in the same world. Sure, it feels like we're missing background on the world, but there's so much more going on that I don't need that extra info dumped into the story. Basically, if you're getting caught up in the background of the world, you may be missing out on the story itself.

@@calebshaffer2283 The Conjuction of the Spheres is mentioned several times in season 1. Not explained at all. You would never know that the Conjuration of Spheres had anything to do with monsters being in the world. I had to go find out this out by reading the Witcher wiki. Good storytelling drops enough hints/breadcrumbs to inform and entice the audience. This could have been done easily in 8 hours of storytelling. Not everything has to be revealed in great detail but the basic premise that worlds collided, and folks/monsters from other world entered a realm whose primary species was elves is not that hard to do and could have been spread through several episodes. Series do this all the time and do it well. It was not done well in the Witcher. If the producers do not want to appeal to a larger audience that folks who have read the books and to gamers then it didn't need to be done. However if the producers want to attract a larger audience then they needed to do a better job of storytelling. People love stories and will except any strange and wacky concept as long as there is internal logic in the world being created there was a misstep creating this world, that is all I am saying. I enjoyed season 1 but I am sure people new to the series without having read the books or played the games would be confused. I am on enough sites to understand it does not take much to confuse viewers which is why I was surprised an experienced showrunner would make a mistake like that and it gives ammunition to critics to give it bad reviews.

U2BearCat the second episode the elves that capture them distinctly say with the conjunction of the spheres brought the humans and monsters which destroyed and stole our homeland.... the show requires the viewer to pay attention to every single word spoken to fully understand the story which is unlike every other show out there currently besides maybe the expanse

Actually I think they did a great job on that matter, explaining it very quickly and just enough to understand a bit but not too much as it is not fully relevant to the story. So far I was pleased by the show (except triss) but I did not play the third game and did not read the book... Now that I am aware of the timeline, the story of Cirilla seems completely fucked up at this level on the show, the events are happening in a completely different order for no reason, a shame.

The of Rivia part was not chosen, he was knighted by Queen Meve (Queen of Lyria and Rivia) because he helped her in the battle of the bridge in Angren, thus earning the title Geralt "of Rivia".

great review! my introduction to The Witcher came with TW3, which i only started playing about a year ago (previously an Elder Scrolls fanboy).. i learned a lot about the story just from playing the third game (reading in-game books, picking up on the dialogue referencing past events, etc).. but I still had a bunch of gaps in the timeline and story.. this video is the perfect remedy for those who are new to the series and are looking for a complete overview that is sure to fill in the missing details and any other knowledge gaps pertaining to the story. Great job on this, definitely deserves a thumbs up

I just picked up Witcher 3 about a week ago. I have never played, watched, or looked up a Witcher game. Decided to give it a try. Ive been watching videos trying to get an idea of what happened so far and I’m lost. It’s AAALLLLOOOOOTTTTT!!!!.. and my Brain is about to explode tryna grasp all the Info I’ve seen in videos. THIS VIDEO has been the most helpful and I feel like I have a grasp on what’s going on after watching this video for a 3rd time today versus all the other vids I watched. I really like this video. I think it’s very well explained and as a newcomer, i kinda understand what im getting myself into. I feel bad for all these “hardcore” fans of the series (books & games) because the video might not includes every important details but i think its a wise decision. The video is created to “recap” the whole storyline in 1 video and to create such compact and informative video in under 30 mins is not an easy thing to do. Besides, it’s not their job to satisfy you with details and important events. Remember this channel needs to make another timeline video that is most likely very different and requires a lot of research to begin with. Im not trying to be arrogant here but as a fan of Books or Games, you guys need to learn how to respect others hardwork.

Also, if you complete the first DLC before finding Ciri in the main game, Gaunter O’Dimm’s list of rewards will include “Wanna know where Ciri is” - if you choose that one, O’Dimm will tell you exactly what you choices you need to make in order to get the ending in which Ciri survives, renounces her throne, and trains under Geralt to become a Witcher. However if playing a new game from level 1, Geralt will be around level 22 for the end-quests to find Ciri (that is, immediately prior to Battle of Kaer Morhen). Hearts of Stone has a minimum level requirement of 30. So basically this is accessible only via New Game Plus, or grinding xp as if you’re playing WoW. I don’t know if the latter is possible.

This was a such a HUGE help, as I have only played about 30 hours of Witcher 3, and never played the first two games. And I would totally do it, if they were remastered. I just watched the season 1 of the tv show and loved it! But I was so confused, not knowing the original story.

Don’t bother with the first game since it has a gamining mechanic of early 2000, but a remake is being produced. But Witcher 2 is actually pretty good, I prefer it over Witcher 3 since it’s shorter and so you have the time to do EVERYTHING, and talk to everybody. I think it’s worthy playing, the remastered version, even if it’s graphics are still 2010-ish

I didn't play the 1st two games because I only got into video games in the last few years thanks to my husband. But I just finished playing Wild Hunt and crying through the ending (I went with the father daughter witcher duo one) and ended up with Yennefer. Such a satisfying game! Now I need a new one to play through this quarentine! I did not play a single game of gwent though.

Spoilers*** Actually taking Ciri to Emyr doesn't worsen their relationship depending on the choices you make. I love that if you beat hearts of stone before the Isle of mists you can ask Gaunter about finding her and he'll essentially tell you all the right decisions to beat the game with a good ending. Be warned though, he will specifically say that no matter what happens, DON'T SELL HER OUT! That scene with her and Emyr is the reference. If you take the money for finding her you'll lock in the worst ending. If you don't you'll have a moment where she looks at you endearingly and grabs your hand. It's the best moment a father could ask for. Also, it will lead you towards the empress ending, but if you haven't beat Djikstra's spy questline, you have an opportunity to get the Witcher ending for Ciri, but it's a hard decision. You have to agree to leave when Djikstra betrays both Roche and Thaler, leaving them to die, but it ensures Redania's victory against Nilfgard and forfeits the bitter sweet empress ending for Ciri's Witcher ending.

@@Chronically_ChiII I think the idea is that with Djikstra leading the North, he turns the tide of war. At the start of the game, Temeria was already in decline and losing, but the change in leadership probably causes Ciri to rethink the proposition if Nilfgard fails to conquer the northern provinces, or that the loss of South overrides Ciri's decision as it's more geo-politically relevant to the ending than her being the heir of a failing dynasty; it's never really explained why that changes the ending. Either way, that's the condition in order to avoid having Ciri leave to become an heiress.

Actually that's not how it was described in the books. After the last wish they spent together for a year and yen was possessive with geralt which made him leave yen with just a rose and a letter. They only truly committed to each other after.... SPOILER ALERT if you didn't read books and you only watcjed the serie s They only committed to each other after they reunited on hirundum. That's when Geralt and yen expressed their love for first time and said "I love u" for first time.

Im trying to understand the story of the world of the witcher because of the show im watching now

good luck buddy.. i think playing witcher wild hunt(video game) is lot better if u are into this universe. i heard books are good too but i loved the games.. world is not so black and white unlike how they showed in the netflix series. everyone has their own perspectives and things are lot subtle. i didnt think the show had good writing and they made lot of characters one dimensional and their arcs made no sense .. but i did love the fight choreography and overall it was enjoyable and wanted me to go back and play the games again .

hard.... best to understand that is story base with alot of european fable story.. witcher is about fight monster and end up between love triangle.. war.. king and adopted daughter... this is only summary of game.... this is without DLC which also the ending....

The game's storyline is different than the books. The show is more closely following the books, so i believe it would be best to get to reading or listen to the audiobooks.

@@Kajukota i read last wish and lesser evil and felt game was lot true to its source material when it came to characters and their motives(sure they changed a lot to get that RPG elements going on but the characters were pretty much true to the source). show went to out of way to change lot of key plot points like how ciri met geralt .. how yenn met geralt .. how yenn became fertile (here in show she had choice .. geralt wasnt even at the hall when he realized the law of suprise. i am not sure if u read the books if u think show followed close to books. they completely missed the point of lesser evil story too.

Honestly I dont think people would play the witcher 1 on ps4. I could be wrong but the actual gameplay of the game wouldnt translate well on a game pad. And graphically it wouldnt hold up. Especially if youre coming From playing the witcher 3 or the witcher 2. Its a great game dont get me wrong.

To me story always supersedes gameplay. They originally planned to make a console version with different gameplay, but I'd even take a move the cursor with control stick and press X. Maybe they'll do a remake. On steam with big picture mode, I'm always using controller. For some reason I encountered a bug on windows 10 in which the game loads me in the wrong spot and I could be missing quest items that'll break the game. Not sure what causes this bug, but I imagine it wouldn't happen on consoles

You can play both 1 and 2 on a laptop. Hell, I did just so I had something to prep me for Witcher 3.

Xbox has witcher 2 witcher 1 u can play on a pc or laptop and i think they might be making a remastered version of the witcher 1 after cyberpunk 2077 comes out so yea

Thanks for making this:) Loved the games for years, the Netflix series is pretty great. Don't have a copy of Witcher 1 anymore, so this really helped put the pieces back together.

If I were The Witcher I wouldn't retire at the end. I'd let Ciri become Empress but I wouldn't settle down, killing monsters is way more fun

Great video, I really enjoyed it and since I was not really familiar with the story until the Netflix series was released and immediately fell in love with it so I played tw3 without playing the others and it took a bit of research to get what was going on, so thanks for putting the whole story in a more logical, compact and accurate manner.

The ending where Geralt basically lets himself die is somber yet bittersweet.

He doesnt die tho, blood and wine the dlc is 3 years later and Geralt literally changes dialoge if Ciri dies.
