The Guardian spent a week with the women who have begun work on transforming a crumbling building into a women-focused support centre in the area that has the highest rates of child poverty in the UK. Louise says that it's often women who bare the brunt of the cost of living crisis and everyday they as seeing people in need, whether it's asking for period products, help with heating bills or just a warm space to have a cuppa and some company.

Inflation is far more harmful to individuals than a collapsing stock or property market because it directly affects people's cost of living, which they immediately feel. It is not surprising that the current market sentiment is extremely pessimistic. In today's economy, assistance is critical if we are to survive.

I've been lucky enough to stockpile cheap non-perishable food and essentials for quite a while in anticipation of things getting worse. People laughed at first at my "war chest". Now no one is laughing and I'm still terrified. I'm a single mum with a daughter with Down syndrome. We use a lot of extra washing powder etc, and we've been living with penetrating damp and slugs / snails infestation for years. The poorer you are, the more you're ignored, the worse you're affected and then we're often blamed for being poor. I stand by every woman on here. Christmas will be a grim situation this year. And my fingers are blue and its not even the coldest time yet. A WHOLE STRATA OF SOCIETY SHOULD NOT HAVE TO JUSTIFY THEIR ACTUAL EXISTENCE!

I have a job and work hard doing all the hours I am able to get, I earn just over £800, my boss says they can only offer 22 hours at the moment, I would love to do more hours of I could get it. My rent is £460 a month, council tax is £133 a month, I have very little left to buy food. I am fortunate enough to get a little universal credit, £100 a month, that tops up my wages. I ring the council several times a year to see if I can get a discount on council as it is a struggle paying the full amount but they always say 'no, I don't qualify, I earn a little too much, and they can only help people more vunrable ' anymore I can understand that as I know they can't help everyone but I can't go on anymore

Its shocking that councils let their buildings go to rot. I have heard about this, ceilings leaking, and council refuses to fix it for YEARS. dont they know that if the problem is caught right away it stops further problems. but ignoring it only leads to the entire place eventually being condemned. Councils across the UK arent getting enough money from the govt to operate these buildings. and there isnt enough housing to put people in who are homeless. I dont see any solution really because they just arent building enough housing.

I was born a couple of years after that war, in the U.S. I grew up in poverty, but not the worst. We at least had heat and food, neither of which these women seem to have. Some are getting ready to be homeless. I think the UK is worse off than the poor in the U.S. I see that the council houses over there are falling apart. I wish these women had the materials to patch the leaks in the ceiling and paint the walls with moisture barrier paint, the same as people do with leaky basements. But I know they cannot afford to buy these materials. Nor can they afford to buy or run dehumidifiers. It is a disgrace. It is also likely that because the housing belongs to the government that any repairs must be authorized and performed by contract workers hired by the government. I expect that unauthorized "repairs" could mean getting evicted for violating the lease agreement. Unbelievable.

Respect to you. As someone familiar with these types of women's centers and support circles, somethings are different. No males are allowed inside in what I'm familiar with, that means no serving men tea, men in halls etc etc..donations from males are alright and males can benefit from the food bank but none are allowed in. It becomes clear that men must build their own support bridges..women work hard to get those buildings and everything, it serves best for their sanctuary space when it's women and children only..trust in the supports and privacy improves greatly then. Services can extend into midwifery, food preserving, trauma counselling etc. All the best! Women deserve a central support circle, a voice.
@duck6100
@duck6100 Жыл бұрын
@Putrid Shittgenstein what's your point here? Men probably built the majority of the buildings in the country, it doesn't mean they had anything to do with their eventual uses. If you're going to attempt to do some sort of incel gotcha moment then at least make sure it actually makes sense.

@@melitajay Yes, this is another problem with the NHS or even "free" state education. 1. People don't take personal responsibility and then become obese or smoke and the burden is on the tax-payer. 2. Kids don't value the education because their parents don't pay every day at the school gates. My only sympathy with the above commentator is: "How on the earth did the UK government create long-term policy that led to the poverty of people today in both material and spiritual and intellectual and social development of themselves?" For the above reason I see almost zero merit in the UK Government and believe it is a system that needs overhauling and redeploying a system of goverance that works for people at the grass-roots/local level as much as possible thus destroying centralized power and it's poverty of success for people.

It's easy to say benefits, a lot of people do take of advantage. For genuine people, it's a life line that you have to jump through hoops for. I'm lucky, my husband has a great job, I work part time for nhs, which I could now do full time. I can change our situation. What I'm getting at is some people can't. Please be kind. We all need to support each other. I had skin cancer on my nose of all places last year, operation was horrific (awake), didn't care after, but now my looks are dragging me down, like it's just sunk in. Just be kind, we don't know what's happened, and don't be ashamed to ask for help. It's hard at the moment ok, everyone needs a pick me up now and then xx

If that community centre has land they can ask the council if they can use the land or part of it to grow vegetables for the use of those who use the centre . It can be done almost free, and seeds are not expensive. The brightest room in the building can be used in spring to start veg plants off near the windows. It certainly won't feed everyone but it would absolutely help. If nothing else they can grow potatoes. They're easy and cheap to grow, low maintenance , and can be cooked in a microwave.

It really is worse in the UK that in other European countries. Nearly all governments put efforts in relieve packages during the first half of the year, that help the people to survive in this economy. I don't say it went perfect (I live in Germany and the relief package for heating cost took far too long ), but it does not compare to the news one gets from the UK where your government was far to wrapped up in their own scandals as well as still believing in the triple down effect as it seems.
