It has been said that architecture is “frozen music.” But sometimes it’s most exciting when it’s just…frozen. Such was the case of the “Pyra-gloo” (pyramidal igloo) constructed by CTBUH CEO Antony Wood and his family at their home in Oak Park, outside Chicago.
The structure, measuring 10 feet (3 meters) in each dimension-the family’s third such project-was built of bricks made from more than 750 cardboard juice and milk cartons, filled with food-colored water and frozen. An electric “chandelier” illuminates it from within. Though extreme cold and heavy snow complicated efforts this year, the family found the project to be an antidote to the doldrums of COVID-restricted home working and persevered to finish the project. As before, the igloo appeared on the front page of the local newspaper, before warmer temperatures rendered it into just a memory, one that would form the foundations of a dream for “the next one.”
