From Emmy Award winning PBS series Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop (Program 208, Season Two)(English Subtitles)
Join David as he travels to a secluded woodland stream in New England off the Saugatuck River in Connecticut, following in the footsteps of Hudson River painters such as Thomas Cole (1801-1848) and Asher Durand (1796-1886). David discusses the Hudson River Painters who were painting and exploring the Hudson River valley in the 1800's before expanding to the American West and South America. They were a loose group of painters who were considered to be the first group of American painters who helped to forge an identity for the newly formed United States. David paints an oil study of the intimate stream in a setting of dense and dappled foliage, demonstrating techniques of painting water and woods used by the Hudson River painters to convey emotion as well as inspiration.

Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop (Seasons One and Two) is an innovative, lively and entertaining Emmy® and CINE Golden Eagle Award winning PBS series that takes you to the actual locations in France, Italy and the United States that inspired the great artists Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Paul Cezanne, J.M.W. Turner, John Singer Sargent, Francesco Guardi, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Winslow Homer, and the Hudson River artists to create some of their most iconic works. These half-hour programs explore the lives, techniques and inspiration of these master artists through a combination of discussion and demonstration in the beautiful locations that inspired them. David is not trying to copy the paintings of these artist but instead to present their techniques and philosophies in his quick sketch demonstration. Inspired by David Dunlop’s infectious enthusiasm and encyclopedic knowledge, Landscapes Through Time combines art, history, travel, philosophy, science and technique to explore the lives and art of a wide range of different artists, creating a new way for artists as well as a general audience to experience and visually participate in the power and magic of the act of artistic creation.

The philosophical thoughts of the artists about nature and painting it, so beautifully presented here, is still our Bible for plein air painting is it not. Very broadly, is it the opportunity to paint uninhabited nature, as well as the emphasis on spirituality that distinguishes American vs European landscape painting? A wonderful episode.

@@DavidDunlopSimmonsArtyes, I live in Dallas! I started painting about 2 years ago and I have watched your Giverny video so many times. I am self taught and have learned primarily by studying art books and watching some KZfaq. Many YT channels don’t get into the art history side of painting and I think it is so important and interesting to see how one art movement influences the next.

I just had dinner with another artist and told her about your technique. Living in Boston I also loved the Winslow Homer episode. I spend a lot of time on Cape Cod and have been to Prout’s neck a number of times. Something about water and nature together make for wonderful subjects. Your ability to paint is so many styles is a rare talent. Please keep doing what you are doing.
