Just found a large queen size wool blanket last night at a local Thrifty Shopper store for 5 bucks ! Super excited. Doing a men's retreat this weekend at a Christian summer camp... We'll be inside but the cabins are un-insulated. Looking forward to using the blanket! Thank you for the tip Dan!

I really liked your bigger wool blanket. After I figured out how you put yours together, I just finished making a 90x90 blanket from two Harbor Freight 60x80 wool blankets. Total cost, with tax = $18.36. Sweet!

Good idea. I keep a few stainless steel diaper pins on hand. They lock closed and come in bright colors, easy to find. 4 for a buck at Walmart.

I use a cashmere wool blanket for summer which is light and soft and for a camping pad I use a sheepskin, I just dont like sleeping in plastic! For winter camping I use an old military sleeping bag that is cotton on the inside and outside with a down filler and I put my cashmere wool blanket inside, I still use my sheepskin as a camping sleep mat.

Nice vid :) I've been using that method for years. I move around a lot in my sleep and end up waking in the middle of the night so I have the exact same Kilt pins. I haven't had trouble since.

Try the same technique when sitting on the blanket DIAGONALLY, instead of squarely. One corner as the foot box, and the diagonally opposite corner as the head covering. Some won’t like it; others will. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

I just had two regular sized wool blankets sewn together on 2 sides (side and bottom) and halfway up the 3rd side so I can climb in and out easily and I don't have to fold and refold or safety pin my blanket every time I move So much easier and doesn't add much more weight to my gear for that second regular sized wool blanket

I do something similar but instead of safety pins I use a military poncho as the ground sheet, putting the blanket burrito on top, wrap up the lower part and snap the sides and foot together (I added two snaps to the 'foot' area) and work my way up to my head and now I have protection from ground moisture and some protection from rain! Also adding ground litter for extra insulation is easier and less of a mess!

Great video Dan. I usually carry 6 extra heavy duty giant safety pins. My wool blanket is extra heavy duty 60"x 90". Weighs in about 5 lbs. but worth the extra heft. If it is really cold I want sufficient protection.

I am trying to find a way to attach a wooby to the inside of my wool blanket. I got these plastic clips from Perry peacock that you can use on a tarp to put them anywhere to make a tie down point and they got a bunch of them maybe If I can tired them down around the periphery of the blakei can join them and have the best of both in one.

Hi Dan, love your insights. What is a good thickness and charachteristics for wool blankets. I would love a video on what to look for in a good blanket. Do you favor loftier fuzzy wool or the sturdier denser blankets like mil surplus that are more durable for outdoor camping?

What do you put on the ground in between you and the wool blanket? I have gone backpacking before with a sleeping bag, bivy, small thermarest pad, and ground cloth but still froze my ass off (mountains in early fall and the sleeping bag was garbage). I know my body and with just the wool blanket, even this big one that I think you wrote in other comments is massive and pieced together at 100"x100", I would freeze.

I wanted to ask a question about the whole wool blanket idea. How on earth do you clean them? Laying in them gets sweat in them, mud on them. Surely not very practical. I grew up in the countryside and actually kept sheep and know all about the properties of wool but washing it is tricky.

In particular you want a wool blanket of 80% wool at least. Wool even when wet keeps you warm. Wool is far superior than cotton or synthetic. Wool is more fire resistant which allows you to sleep by the fire. This was the way of old and the way of new. This is a tradition that doesn't fade.
