The UK needs a larger Navy but I think it can be argued that the West especially the U.S. Australia, Canada and New Zealand rely heavily on the U.K. eavesdropping, intelligence gathering and cyber warfare/defense. Maybe it needs that and a larger army and Air Force. But I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say that the U.K. isn’t pulling its weight (like Germany).

To illustrate the issues we have in the UK in defence - with a Regular Army that is at it's smallest, probably for ever, much is made of the 30,000 plus numbers within the Reserve . However despite politicians regularly citing these figures as an indication of the true strength of the British Army our Army Reserve units are allowed only 28 days training per man per year - barely adequate to cover their mandatory training and totally insufficient to provide properly trained personnel and units that could deliver during any major conflict (let alone providing any motivation for retention of the volunteers!). Indeed some units had to suspend training at the end of the last financial year under threat of losing some of this year's training budget , This is a scandal of mismagement of the Reserve by MOD and the chain of command and the shame of it is that in reality an increased training budget to provide (many) more days is a cheap fix - especially in comparison to anything else in the defence budget. Perhaps the Sun could investigate this !

'Defence' today is not really about defending the United Kingdom's seas, air space or a land army that can repel an invasion. Indeed, for most Western allied nations, isn't it really about offense and the protection of ecconmic and corperate long and short term interests? Continual NATO expansion and overt and covert actions against Russia (including a possible 2014 US lead coup in Ukraine) has more or less guarunteed that we are now fighting a proxy war with Russia and thus have enteted into a new Cold War era despite dire inequality and rising levels of poverty at home. Between 2010 and 2015, the Conservatives cut the Army from 102,000 trade-trained personnel to 82,000. As of 1 January 2021, the trade-trained strength of the army is 76,300. This is seven per cent below the target set in the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) of 82,000 personnel. The army has not met this target since the middle of the last decade. The Royal Navy/Royal Marines and the RAF are also below their 2020 targets. It also shows that the armed forces as a whole is six per cent below the trained/trade-trained target of 144,000 by 2020. @@DavidSmith-ze2wi It is not a flypast. It is a parachute drop to celebrate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The Parachute Regiment had expected to honour its wartime heroes by sending over 450 men in four planes. A Parachute Regiment source, said: 'While we don't put on a big show every year, the 80th anniversary is being seen as special as it's probably the last milestone for surviving veterans.' He said that the regiment wanted four of the RAF's A400M to be provided to allow about 450 paratroopers to take part. But to the Paras' anger, only one aircraft - which can accommodate 116 Paras - was made available. In contrast, America is expected to send at least six C-130s, with Poland and Canada also understood to be supplying planes for paracute drops. No but it chilled out a lot but with America muscling into Ukraine it's bound to warm things up. The head of Britain's armed services said in the last year for NATO and the US to move into Eastern Europe would worry the Russians but going into the Ukraine was poking the bear with a stick. That war has being going nowhere for over a year its time to negotiate. I don't think Putin's a good guy but things could get out of hand if they try and break the stalemate.

The fact we have been spending less and less on military we should want to bump it up to at least 4% instead of 2.5% to get the army re established surely 2.5% is still far too low that was recommended years ago and we would have countless amounts of ammo and defence's so surely doubling that number will catch us up eventually. Oh wait no windfall taxes very intuitive government we have. 20 trillion lost to brexit meanwhile tories are paying their bankers mates and company they have shares in. Meanwhile Infrastructure suffers along with public sectors. The uk government only has short term plans that bite the taxpayer 3x as badly as the previous fiscal policies. The fact they don’t recognise the genocide that’s on going and keep supplying weapons shows how single minded and delinquent this government and labour our next tragic government will be. That said I would not trust reform or any other party either.
