Words can not express my love for these dear books. He truly was, in my opinion, one of the greatest writers of all time. He made it all come to life...the people...the landscape. I could hear the Yorkshire dialect as I read and see the beautiful countryside as if I was there. Dear Herriot is like an old friend and I revisit those sweet books from time to time. Years ago, while Christmas shopping for my dear father, I came across The Best Of James Herriot book...a beautiful hard back with drawings of the old veterinary instruments in the margins. A few weeks later dad called me to say I had given him the best present ever. He picked it up on a cold snowy day and couldn't put it down. At one point my mother heard him from the kitchen and ran to investigate as she thought he was crying. Well, he was in that he was laughing so hard the tears were streaming. That book is now with me as I lost my dear dad in 2011.

Your father's books help me survive some really tough times in my life: I was working 11 hours, 6 days a week making barely enough for a roof over my head and food. The only entertainment I could afford come from a used bookstore just a block from where I lived and where I found all of your father's books. While other people were going out drinking, eating, and seeing movies, I was home reading and even so I think I got the better deal.

It was your Dad, Jim, who brought my husband and me together. We honeymooned in England and found Yorkshire and went back 7 times to visit there specifically. We met your Dad in person on our last night there in 1989 (we were staying in School House cottage in Sutton Under Whitestonecliff two doors down from you!) - he was going to your house for supper, he said, and he signed our Herriot books for us! It was a dream come true - to meet him - and what a lovely person he was. We are his biggest fans! Thank you for this video, it's very lovely.

The James Herriot books are the books I would want with me if I were stranded on a desert island. I’ve been rereading them every 2-3 years all through my adult life.

Jim ,I have read,read and re-read all of your father's books for over 40 years. loved and continue to love them. They have gotten me through some really tough times.He has been such a blessing to me!

I first remember reading the James Herriot stories while a US college student in the early 1970s. He created such visions of Yorkshire that I knew one day I had to visit. In the summer of 1986 I was traveling the UK with a friend and we made it a point to meet the author on his open house day of the week in Thirsk. I was so impressed with this tall and kind, cheerful and gentlemanly man who welcomed us all into his clinic for a chat. While signing his books, he found out I was a children’s school librarian and he excitedly told me that he had a new series of picture books coming out with selected farm animal stories. Of course, from then on I had all of the individual books in my libraries and still have my own first edition copies.....and my autographed copy of James Herriot’s Dog Stories that had just been published in 1986!

Whenever I'm asked who my favorite author is, and although he is self described as not a literary giant, I have to say Herriot, though few people know who I'm referring to. And if they did, I felt a kinship with them immediately. His books I have read since childhood and still read through my busy adult years. The wonderful stories will never diminish as I get older. I was so sad when he passed, but with all the pleasure he brought to his readers, he can't be anywhere but heaven. : )

I distinctly remember reading the first chapter of "All creatures great and small" and realizing it was something different! Funny, sad, breath takingly beautiful and above all, heart warming.

I never understood why James Herriot's books were so popular. Even though I'm a huge animal lover. I'd never read any, until a few months ago. Now I've read all of them, I think! He's such a wonderful writer, with an excellent, understated sense of humor I find delicious. You just have to respect a man who went out on calls at all hours of the day and night, getting kicked, bitten, yelled at by farmers, but endured it all because he himself loved animals so much. Makes me cry just to think of it....

I've read those books over and over. As a child, who suffered bullying in school, those books got me through. I think I learned to love dogs and long hikes from James Herriot and even today, a two hour hike through snow in Minnesota woods with my three dogs is heaven on wrath and reminds me of his dog stories.

Reading your dads books when I was 14,living in NZ, all I could think about was I wish I was there.Well at 59 years of age I got there.It was so familiar,I felt as though I I had been before.These stories were so informative,so full of humour and written with such passion, that I read and re read till the books fell apart.I will forever be thankful to your dad for giving me a place to go to that bought me great peace.

It must be extremely weird to have your boyhood home turned into a museum. Thousands of people visiting the rooms where you ate, slept and lived. I am glad you posted this. I started reading James Herriot books about 15 years ago and though the books were fascinating there was almost no information available about James Herriot anywhere. Now as the internet has become more condensed I can finally see and learn more about an extraordinary life.

I just finished reading "The Real James Herriot" tonight. I can't say enough about it, if you have any interest at all in the books or the tv program, read this book! His real life is every bit as interesting as it is portrayed on screen.

My late husband and I used to go to the Listeners Library when we were going on a long trip and most of the time one of your fathers books was the choice. With four children of varying ages it was quite an easy choice in keeping everyone happy. I often wonder what people in passing cars thought when they saw our car rocking with laughter on the trip. I miss those days so finding this clip was really wonderful. Thank you for sharing your home and experiences. Our lives were enriched by his writing.

James, thank you for uploading this video. I almost got to meet your father. I, along with my wife, were stationed in England as part of the United States Air Force from 1986 to 1989. We loved England and traveled all over the Island, including Scotland and Wales every chance we had. One of those years, we traveled up to Thirsk, and I brought all the James Herriott books that I had in hopes that I would be able to meet him and have him autograph them for me. When we got to Thirsk, I found out that he was out of the office that day but would be back in the next day. Unfortunately, I had to be back to my base, RAF Woodbridge, the next day so I couldn't stay. I regret more than anything of not moving heaven and earth to be able to stay an extra day so that I could have met your father. But, I still have his books and still read them all over again every once in a while. Thank you again for uploading and your father was certainly loved by many.

I never could have imagined the rigors of the life of a country vet until I read your father's books. I've laughed, cried, cringed and felt the sense of wonder and amazement that only James Herriot was given the gift from the Creator Himself to pass on to the world.

Dear Jim, thank you so much for this. I had the joy to meet your da just before mine retired from the Marine Corp. It played a huge part in my life working for a vet for nearly 20 yrs. I never could get through the math requirements and pharmacology nearly did me in, however i had an incredible boss that taught me so much. In fact, I learned to do spay and neuters for humane society beginimg with my own cat. This note is too long but your father and family and extended famly has touched so many of witch I thrillef to include myself.

While serving in the US Army and newly stationed in Okinawa, I was looking for something to do on a rainy Saturday. So I went to the dayroom area and saw a small bookcase with some books. I selected “All Creatures Great and Small” and fell in love with the story. So through the years I purchased and read over and over again the series and my kids grew up hearing the stories. I’ve watched the series several times and am now watching the series on PBS.

On a cold winter's night, here in Canada, I have often curled up with your father's books, and been transported to that place and time that he loved so much. The warmth, humour, understanding, and love that always filled his writing has consistently been a tonic for all ailments whether real or imagined. And through all of it, I remember the days of my own childhood in Hertsfordshire England, when my own father's bakery route would put me in touch with farms, cows, pigs and chickens all wonderously viewed through a 9 year old boy's eyes. I have often told my own kids, that if they want to taste the essence of this life, to read your Dad's books. No time could be better spent!

Thank you for this lovely tour! I read all of your father's books; my favorite scenes were his detailed descriptions of the meals he enjoyed with his clients. He wrote such accurate depictions that I almost could taste the contents of those tables! Slabs of homemade ham, jars with jellies and jams, breads and desserts - oh, my! I'm now living in a rural part of West Virginia, surrounded by beef cattle and chicken houses - and lots of delicious homemade foods! Lovely!

I visited the museum in 2007 with a dear friend who then lived in Yorkshire. As I was paying for my purchases a gentleman, to my left, began signing books for the clerk. Didn't think anything of it - there were only the four of us in the entire shop - and was too busy making sure I paid the kind clerk the right amount of money. My friend, to my right, kept sharply nudging me in the side, saying "sotto voce", "Itjsissun! Itjsissun!" ??? Finally got it out of her that it was James Wight's (Herriott) son. I highly recommend going to the museum - very well done and informative. Wish I could go back - I just loved Yorkshire so much.

I listen to the audio books every single night ,their my bedtime stories. They take me back to my native land, accents,and descriptions. The comfort these stories have brought me in times when I've been on consolable. My gratitude to this sensitive ,intelligent, articulate, industrious and compassionate man is immense.

My late cousin Colin Deehan was a camera man in the early days of the series.

I read all of his books and what a pleasure it was too. There were more than one time that I laughed for he had such a talent for describing the most mundane events. When he described his arrival at the vet clinic to take up his job, rang the bell and there arrived I don't know how many dogs of all sizes, pounding against the door, barking viciously. When the door opened, the housekeeper let out an order and off the dogs went very sheepishly, their tails between their legs no longer the monsters they pretended to be. I still have all his books, have read them more than once with a long period between and one day will read them again for they offer such entertainment that you can never tire of his storytelling. Now, I watched the 1st series of Creatures Great and Small which I loved, the 2nd series not so much.

Your fathers books are the salt of the earth. As the oldest of 6 Minnesota farm children, I like how both sides of farm life are portrayed: the hard work AND the rewards. He showed respect for the people, the profession, and your beautiful country. We loved our museum visit, so long ago they THEN allowed me to sit in that car! Thank you for carrying forward the grace he portrayed in the people, hard work, and your lovely country.

I found your Dad's books as a very young mother in the early 1970's. I used to laugh sometimes to near hysteria trying to be quiet when the girls were in bed. My sister and I passed them back and forth. I still have them. Can't get rid of them. Your Dad had such a wry sense of humor. Glad they have done this to commemorate all the happiness he brought so many people.

My dad was a veterinarian-started his practice about the same time as Alf Wight did-his was small animals in USA-. Wight had it much tougher-the terrain, large animals-weather, etc-but I realize after reading all his books that the medicines they lacked save so many animals today-he would have loved these books-cherished them-he died in 1970 and never got to read them. The books are treasures for all who love animals-thanks Jim

My Father in law was Vicar and Rural Dean of Ea....,.a small town near there. The farmers, and all the people are so grand. My son took his wife there last year and they were treated to real Yorkshire hospitality. They have fallen in love with the most wonderful area in the world..We live far away now, but Yorkshire is still a great part of our hearts.

Thanks Jim for this lovely video. I'm just at the end of reading your book, The Real James Herriot, a memoir of my Father. I'm enjoying it immensely. I find myself reading parts aloud to my husband the way I did your Dads. I have just about worn out most of my collection of Herriot books. And watch the DVD series often. It struck me reading your book was that I was not the only crazy Californian to visit the Dales and your home. It's a very intimate thing to read through the detailed life of a person. We thought of your dad as that best friend we never met, someone we could sit down with and have a grand old time. (Along with a million others who felt the same way). So thanks again for sharing him with the world. We still love him to pieces.

Yep! Thanks for uploading this video. I've bought and read nearly all the Herriot books, several times. They have a relaxing and peacefulness about them. They give pure escapism to a time when the world was a different place, long before mine. They are an absolute joy to read, and written in such an easy way which invites the reader to keep turning the pages.

I found your Father's first book in my high school library in 1978. I fell in love instantly. It was one of my favorite books that I read that year, and it sparked a love of historical books, both autobiographical or fictional. Now I am 'all grown up", i have a daughter who is planning on becoming a vet, and she's getting the book for Christmas--- I hope she loves it as much as I did.

Hi Jim. My mum had a big book of your Dad’s collected stories, which I read whilst on visit from Europe, where I’d moved from my native US. I loved that book & have kept it, practically under lock & key, to this day. That book was such a comfort to me, you cannot imagine. Ofc I eventually saw & bought the televised series which I also treasure. Many thanks for this documentary “straight from the horse’s mouth”. Your Dad was one in a million! You must be v proud. I first enjoyed these books and the BBC series with my mom. Now I enjoy them again. The laughter, the kindness and the love stay with me always and bring comfort and joy.

I first read the Readers Digest condensation of the book All Creatures Bright and Beautiful and ever since then I fell in love with the writing of James Herriot who, I later found out was the pen name of James Alfred Wight. Being unable to find the other books in the local bookstores in this part of India in the earlier days, I have since been able to buy all the volumes from Amazon, including the biography written by his son Jim. I derived as much pleasure in reading about the actual person James Alfred Wight as I derived in reading his books. He will continue to entertain millions of readers as they will look back in wonder of an age gone by.

I can’t tell you how much pleasure these books have given me. I love the fact the new James Herriot speaks with a Scottish accent. My wife will be pleased if Jim’s beloved AFC Sunderland gets a mention. She is from Seaburn.

James Herriott books gave me so many joys as a young person. My daughter and I started watching the new series. We have had nights where we read children's versions of the stories. All were enraptured by them

As many others have said, your father’s books provided a means of visiting a better world during a lonely time. His books were a wonderful way of escape. My grandmother and one of my cousins also enjoyed the books immensely as well as the BBC series.

Before ACG&S came out in the United States, the first chapter was inserted as a tickler in a paperback novel someone loaned me to read. I never did finish the novel, but the chapter from your father's book absolutely hooked me, and I couldn't wait until I could get my copy. I read it twice and wished that a sequel would be published. When the sequels started coming, I kept buying the books and re-reading them. I bought a recording of your father reading them (in his Scots accent), and I was amused to note that a chapter about a cricket match didn't find its way into the American printed editions--with good reason, since we can't make any sense of cricket. I bought all of the books, including the two on Yorkshire and your bio of your father (Bravo!); and I am looking at them right now, tempted to begin again. My only complaint against this present video is that it isn't nearly long enough.

My dream of places to visit includes this one. It appears that I wont make it to England, so this sort of video is nice to see.

When my dad past I was so sad I found your dads books and my sadness lifted.my husband would find me laughing so hard ,and I would read the stories out to him that he was laughing with me. I loved all the animals Judy the nurse dog the farmers and their wives .Tristan what a scream And the feeling of warmth in your dads wtittings.

As a child, I once called-in the surgery when our dog picked-up a tick on her eyelid whilst we were on holiday. We had no idea it was the 'real' Skeldale, as the Herriot books were only just becoming famous.

When the series hit tv here in the states, my mother and I never missed a show.

Dear Jim, I just loved your dads books and tv series. Your father had the most humane, loving face that no actor could possibly replicate. I adored the series but watching the photos of your dad , there was no way they could reproduce your wonderful father, Bless him. I had been well into the book when it hit me to bring my son into this world.... he read it and all others of your dad's. This brings me back. I have read and re-read all the books and have seen every episode of the original series so often that I have them memorized. The stories never fail to entertain me and give me great comfort. There are three generations in my family who have loved All Creatures, and the fourth one will begin their own love affair with the series as my grandchildren start to watch the new production. Cannot wait!

What a great factual insight. The books along with the BBC serial, will always be firm favourites of mine as they never fail to cheer me up on a gIoomy day. Just a minor detail but as you move though the different rooms, I love that around the 2:40 mark you can see that the tv in the background is playing an episode of All Creatures Great and Small.

Lovely video , read the books to my son and we read the funniest ones again. Loved the lab that kept getting cans stuck on his head and slid down the slide with the children. .

I have every book ever written by James Herriot, and have read them many times over. I know that times were tough in his days but they where in many ways far better than times today. I just wish we could experience the same level of respect and kindness that existed then, when Britain was truly British!
