Thanks Manu! I really appreciate the positive feedback mate! I have some ideas for a new breed of fishing ski.....but so far manufacturers don't seem interested, maybe because our numbers are too small to be much more than a blip on their balance sheets. Maybe we can create a groundswell and it'll happen one day.

Great video, Paul! Awesome to see some other design approaches as someone who’s gone to similar extremes pimping out my ski. Well done to Matty on a beast of a weapon. Btw - it’s the 55 lb thrust Minn Kota Terrova here. I used to have a 55 lb tiller steer before my current 80 lb spot lock model. I wouldn’t suggest going any less than 55 lb as it’s often needed for combined tidal current + tailwind.

Hehe yeah! One thing that I forgot to ask is if the trolling motor on the rear pulls the ski backwards in spot lock or pushes into the current? I’d want the latter….
@naskies
@naskies 2 жыл бұрын
@@Jetcast the motor “pulls” rather than pushes - so it effectively pulls the ski backwards into the current. Most of my fishing is casting up current so it’s handy for me, but does make the ski a bit left-right wobbly with cross wind. I keep a small sea anchor if it bothers me (rarely) and it completely smooths it out. I spent many hours with Patrick trying to design a “front” mount but no go with so much weight up front and they’re not designed to be frequently immersed. Minn Kota hadn’t imagined that fishos like myself being on the water for 12+ hr at a time with the leccy running, so my first one rusted out within months - they ended up redesigning the contact plates and software for us, haven’t had a problem touch wood. That bit of extra clearance off the water that Matty has on his is a great design.

I’ve been asked before and have thought about it. One of the issues I have for doing that is I shoot everything myself. You kinda need a drone to follow you out if you’re going to make a meaningful video to help people. You’ll see some of my videos last year crossing a bar and it only looks like something when it’s breaking top to bottom. Otherwise the GoPro, being such a wide angle lens, makes the water look much flatter than it is. I’m always after something new, so I’ll consider how to do this and see what I can come up with.

These videos just get better. Well done guys 😁 Long shot, but what would the difference be in total weight between the your fully equipped Yamaha and this Fish Pro set-up?
@Jetcast
@Jetcast 2 жыл бұрын
Probably only difference would be the specs out of the factory as the Tubbies and things are similar weight between the models. . But if Matty loads up the aux tank with fuel, he'd be adding 40Kg straight away. We'd normally only fill the aux tank up when fishing a long way from the ramp, and you tend to burn through a lot of that fuel getting to the spot - otherwise you wouldn't need the aux tank. So once you've arrived at your distant spot you have a full standard tank left, and peace of mind to fish for a long time and still get back. Remember most skis have an additional load capacity of around 120-150Kg, so what he is adding is not exceeding that.

@Jetcast
@Jetcast Жыл бұрын
Hi Mike. One is a live bait tank, and one is a watertight storage bottle. I guess there is no reason you couldn’t use them for water . The advice I’ve had is however that for a few days away you don’t need to rinse/flush if you’re using the ski each day. Just make sure to give everything a big clean when you get back home. The issue is using it and leaving it without being flushed in the garage for days or weeks.

(Vision Homes Jetski Adventures) I have seen a guy post a video of one on a ski. He was somewhere from the Pacific Northwest region and he had a pot hauler on the back of his Fish Pro that was making short work of bringing in the pots. Sorry, can't recall his name but if you look up the Facebook groups from that region you are likely to din someone doing what you are looking for. It's not something we see in this country (Australia) but certainly would be a good thing if we started chasing the crabs in the deeper water.

Love the set up! Thanks for sharing. I am a new fish pro rider so I am curious if it is harmful to the ski being pulled backwards against quick currents? Does current being pushed through the jet backward cause any unwanted damage or is it a nonissue? Do you have any videos on how the light installation works? Does it affect any water tight areas to be concerned about? Thanks in advance.
@Jetcast
@Jetcast 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Erik, I can't say there would be any issue if the current was less than the maximum towing speed of a ski- when not under power- about 8 knots I believe- and that sort of water current your trolling motor is unlikely to be able to hold you anyway. But these units are better for pulling than pushing, so front mounting might be better for any ski. Re: Nav Lights, I don't have any video on the actual installation process. One of the easiest solution for nav light is to use a Railblaza nav light kit. These are battery operated, the batteries last a very long time, and the units are easily removed once the sun is up. The Railblaza mount can also be used for your GoPro! You can get a Seadoo GTX/Fish Pro mount for Railblaza accessories at jetfisher.com -so there no electrical issues to worry about. In fact my own ski is at the shop right now as my front wired-in nav lights have failed.

Hi Wizard7889, thanks for watching. We are in SE Queensland, Australia. The Tubbies are made in South Africa and not economical to buy from Australia unless you live here. The local dealer here, Shoreline Jetskis, brings them in by the container and supplies and fits them for us. Someone in the USA needs to be an entrepreneur and import them! I get so many requests from US viewers that there must be a market waiting to be grabbed! You could import one set however from the ZA company, Racetech Yamaha who are in Durban. Some people in NZ and Hawaii have done it successfully. I'd say freight is going to be quite expensive as they are big and bulky items. Good luck!

Its a nice set up, but i think buying stabicraft 1450, 1550, will be much less hassle then buying expensive jetski and then spending a lot more to rig it up.
@Jetcast
@Jetcast Жыл бұрын
You’ll still likely be adding similar accessories like Sounder, trolling motor, rod holders etc to a Stabicraft. To get an equally capable offshore boat, you’ll likely need a bigger one than the 1550 to start with, and that boat is around double the price of the well kitted out PWC. If you’re a lake or river fisho, you can also get a lower cost PWC too. So think double the on water cost to get anything close to the PWC capabilities.

I get that tubbies are adding stability, but what happens when one get flipped? Can you still right the ski? Same question goes for having an esky and other weight mounted High. How high is the aux tank mounted? I think in some respects these actually detract from safety in a way.. Actually, if they are totally airtight, you'd never sink, so there's that. (bit like a Stabi. )
@Jetcast
@Jetcast 9 ай бұрын
I've had Tubbies on three PWCs, over about 8 years now and over 1200 motors hours at sea. It is almost impossible to flip a ski with Tubbies. You would need to let a sizeable breaking wave hit you sideways, and you'd probbaly need to be doing it on purpose to flip it! The technique I was told however is that you open the left side hatch and pull it over just as you would if you flipped your ski. You are fishing, not joyriding, so the same behavior on a small boat could flip it too. The aux tank sits on top of the main tank. On my ski I don't notice it. On Matty's ski (this Fish Pro) it sits right at the front of the ski and is balanced on either side and is quite low in the and heavy rear-mounted esky, and I did notice the higher centre of gravity in turns and it was definetely less stable. With Tubbies, and when I have the live bait tank full of water, I do notice a lean at times but never a feeling that I am unsafe or going to tip. The Tubbies make a jetski far safer. The rear cooler I would not recommend myself, as there's no need for it's additional space in 99% of trips if you have Tubbies, plus it obstructs the rear deck for getting on and off the ski at shore or offshore.
@theowenssailingdiary5239
@theowenssailingdiary5239 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comprehensive answer. I'm not making the point from a boat vs ski perspective, just wondering if they actually (the pods) make the ski more /less safe. So they could make it harder to right, make it much more stable, and make the ski almost unsinkable (if the pods can be made airtight(ish).. Seems like a fair deal to me. I have a 4.5m CConsole tinny which is a very Good boat offshore (for a tinny), but I'm leaning towards a ski because my bar is a bit hectic, and I find myself travelling to another area to avoid it. On windy days im seeing guys punching out and it makes me a bit envious. I like the Kawasaki for the hulls (from what I can glean from the tube), but wonder if the deeper v makes then inherently less stable. Do you know any fishos using Kawasaki hulls? I haven't seen any. Anyway, love your channel, thanks@@Jetcast
@Jetcast
@Jetcast 9 ай бұрын
@@theowenssailingdiary5239 Thanks for the positive comments. Tubbies apparently have positive buoyancy,..something about some foam moulded into the base so that they don't add "on-water weight" to the ski at rest. So somewhat safer for that alone. But the ability to keep the rear deck free vs rear esky for storage is far safer if you do come off. It's also pretty hard to fall off off with Tubbies -but more likely than flipping the ski! You may also want to have a swim or jump in to retrieve something you accidentally dropped! The pods also give some leg protection from bitey predators that might try to take your catch at the very last moment! Tubbies give you plenty of storage but are not watertight. As you noted, bar crossings are far easier than on any other craft. (See my Bar Crossing how to on this channel) I don't really know any Kawasaki users in our groups to comment but they (use to) have a good rep for hulls, performance, and reliability. However the difference between all brands in terms of hull performance is not a big issue for we fishos. I tell people don't get to hung up on that as we are not boy racers. In fact we like to try to conserve fuel so we can go even wider for longer! The ST3 Sea-doo hull is known for bow-hunting in waves/chop but is not bad enough to put you off using them offshore. They always seem to go where I go and do so it the same speed and probably comfort too. Hope this helps. cheers

Hi Daniel, I had to climb in from the back the other day. The Fishpro has a step that folds down on the back and I climbed over the Minn Kota and then the Cooler. I'm pretty short and it wasn't too hard. A lot of people keep the rear deck clear and pull their fish on this way.

In Australia, Shoreline Jetskis. Other countries you need to contact the manufacturer South Africa called Racetech Yamaha who are in Durban.

No worries Joe! Swing past the website and take a look at what is available: www.jetfisher.com The Tubbies for the Fish Pro /GTX and other ski brands and models are from Shoreline Jetskis in Brisbane, so if you're from outside Australia, it might be a bit of a challenge getting those. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Matthew, the prices vary a little due to shipment quantities and demand. Best speak to the sellers in Australia, Shoreline Jetskis, for accurate quote including fitting.

Way to much in my personal opinion. Why wouldn't you just have a boat at that point? You basically have a mini center console... What's your fuel consumption when you load it down with extras and you have coolers full of fish and bait wells full of water? It seems like you've moved yourself out of the realm of being fast, easy, and cheap fishing.

Still like the video and still subscribed. I did really like the Minn Kota on the back. I think that's the most logical addition and something I want to add to my FishPro Trophy.

Hi there. We get that a lot- 'buy a boat". But really I just reply that that sort of comment misses the point a little of the uniqueness of fishing from a ski. If you've got a FP you know the ease of launch and retrieve, the great fuel economy, the ease of cleaning etc. The only downside is really what you can take with you, and getting wet!. In some locations you can target one fish type or use one style of fishing, but for us the day may not always work out for the chosen species, so we carry different kit to take advantage of the limited amount of time available to fish. The replacement boat to fish where Matty fishes is likely to be at least a 6M + ocean going boat. Then you'll notice the fuel consumption! Remember he is crossing coastal bars with breaking waves, so even a modest centre console is going to set you back around $80-$100K or more if fitted out properly for offshore work and bar crossing safety. And as he mentions in the video, he likes to target the tuna on topwater so the speed and agility of a ski outshines any boat when you are a solo angler. I recently did a podcast that explains the many advantages -and some of the disadvantages -of the jet ski. Maybe its a topic for a video? Top tip: a trolling motor should pull a boat, not push, so in choppy water a front mounted trolling motor might be the better option. Thanks for joining in on the conversation. And thanks for watching the video too!

btw these skis can still reach 40knots even with all of the kit onboard. Plenty of power to carry all the gear. Economy is up to you as you can ride anywhere from 15-30 litres per hour. 30 litres in an hour will get you probably 70km or more though. You haven't lost any maneuverability to concern you for fishing and getting to and from the spots, or going through the bars. So no, I really can't say you have to turn to a boat .

@@Jetcast I can dig it bro! I do get that space wise especially for long hauls. I do recognize the lack of big fish storage on the FP and PSW all around. I think yall boys definitely address that with your gunnel attachments. Having a live well is good on the FP but you are seriously limited on coupling any kind of storage combo. You really only have two storage options readily on the FP, mostly. If you want drinks, fish storage and a live well you're SOL with the FP unless you throw a soft yeti in the compartment but then again, you're sacrificing something you'd usually store in there. Again the Minn Kota you installed is definitely 👌 and I TOTALLY see the use of your gunnell attachments.

Hi Ken, at the end of the day nobody is paying me/us to make these videos. They are all done from my own pocket. I only make the equivalent of a tank of fuel each month on ad revenue from KZfaq, so you have to start to wonder why people like me even bother doing them! The only potential for some return is to sell some specialist accessories alongside my hobby. Many of these items actually help jet ski fishos out, and might save them money - or even their lives- in the long term. All of Matty's comments were unsolicited and genuine. He bought all the items from the respective vendors, and in fact I didn't know him personally up until the day I shot this video. Hope this all makes sense...making these videos costs time and money, and 99% of people get to watch them for free. Enjoy them but don't judge the motives.

Just bought a ski, haven't collected it yet. This video has been so helpful. Picked so much up so quickly. Will be in touch with Shoreline and Jetted to get a few items including mine kota bracket. Cheers lads 😉👍 I've done a shitload of boating over about 40 years. But I need to learn more about Jetski issues and safety, will keep searching through utube videos and hopefully get to meet a few experienced people like Matty that can help build my knowledge and increase my safety at sea. Thanks

I hear ya! Be great if they were mass produced to get them to a more affordable figure. But they are currently made by one company and I believe they can make only one set per week, then they get shipped from South Africa! They are really good quality, so you have to love your fishing! I’m up to my third set now, and love how they transform a PWC into a serious offshore-capable solo sports fishing weapon! :)
