Robinson R44 is one of the best selling helicopters in the world’s nd for good reason. This helicopter can server several missions, mainly training new pilots and can also haul passengers. It’s a great passenger aircraft.
Equipped with a Lycoming 0-540, you’ve got enough power to carry all your load. Your cursing between 100 and 120 mph. As you know, helicopters are really for speed, but rather practicality. And the R44 delivers great on that. It’s a much easier aircraft to fly and tailing in. The t-bar control arm is revolutionary and the one fitted int he R44 has hydraulics so it’s much easier on the hand for long periods. To get your hands on a Robins R44, you’d need at least $150,000 for a used one and about $500,000 for a brand new one.
Here are some performance specs on the R44 helicopter
Engine: Lycoming 245 HP
Range: 350 miles
Speed: 120 mph
Operation Cost per hour: $350
Price: $500,000 new

My wife and I were right there for flight lessons while you were filming this video. I was in the Cessna taking off in the beginning of your video while my wife sat on the patio watching you film! We really enjoy your videos. I wish I would have realized it was you so I could have introduced myself.

One of the main reason why these are so popular is its service schedule program. they are basically made to run for 12 years or 2000 hours and you have to completely overhaul it at an authorised service. Other than that you just change the oil and do the checklists. It is an aircraft that any pilot can operate at his or her heliped . Overhaul costs between 150-200k depending on the model and owners have the ability to lease if it has many hours but not so many years left until overhaul to compensate the cost.

Love your reviews Mike... I see someone pointed out...the Student actually learns from the right seat, which is the PIC position. The left seat controls are removeable...even the collective. The instructor and student have thier own collectives. I don't believe the R44 is hydraulic assist. Probably the R66...but I don't have any time in those. FAR Part 61, SFAR 73 make for an enlightening read on Robinson Helicopers. Originally designed to be the commuting vehicle for common pilots...they had a very high accident rate. The SFAR has helped reduce the rate of accidents and places some added restrictions on Robinson pilots. I didn't really suffer any noticeable pain or fatigue when flying the teeter bar R22. But I was never spoiled flying a hydraulic assisted flight control system. They are cool little helicopters though. If I win the lottery...I'm flying out to Torrence to chose the colors for a new R66 :)
@brameldm

Why don't you believe the R-44 has hydraulics?
@chuggsinator
@chuggsinator 4 жыл бұрын
@@brameldmThanks for calling me on that. I stand corrected. They do have hydraulic assist. I have an old R44 manual, and just didn't recall anything there about hydraulic assist. I haven't reviewed it in a very long time. I have time only in the R22. In Mike's video...while he was showing a close up of the teeter bar, I could see the R66 logo behind it on the panel. It appears the R44 Astro did not originally have hydraulics...they were offered as a retrofit later. My bad.

The R22 is the trainer. I am watching another guy train. This is weird. The instructor must fly with his cyclic handle up around his upper chest in order to allow the student to hold the cyclic in a normal position. I don't see how this can be certified as a trainer just for that reason. They need to retrofit separate cyclic controls. Couldn't be that complicated.
@brameldm
@brameldm 4 жыл бұрын
Can you explain your thought process? It works just like any other cyclic control except it's a little higher. I haven't had any trouble teaching in them but maybe you know something I don't?
@extremereclusefallows5779
@extremereclusefallows5779 4 жыл бұрын
@@brameldm The normal cyclic grip should be held while the forearm is wresting on the thigh. I wouldn't want to have a real emergency and get caught reaching for the cyclic so high. Just ain't normal. I have always flown in aircraft with separate dual controls. This is an easy factory fix.

@@extremereclusefallows5779 Hmm, I can fly from the left seat with my arm resting on my thigh while the student holds the cyclic normally. All I have to do to "reach for the control" is close my fingers around it. Are you speaking from experience or conjecture? Have you tried teaching in one? Have you even flown one? Edit: also, what do you mean by "the R22 is the trainer". What exactly does that mean? What makes it the trainer? Having taught in them both, I'd say the only advantage the 22 has over the 44 for training is cost.

@@brameldm I flew in the Army from 86-96. TH-55, HUEY and UH60. They really don't compare to the R22 and 44. Why do they need to construct the cyclic control like that. Don't think it would be too complicated or cost prohibitive to separate the controls.

I don't know but this design just doesn't appear to be a quality build to me. Price-wise for helos, it's probably a better bang for the buck and it's definitely nicer than a R22 but just never appreciated their T-bars either. Wouldn't increase weight that much to ditch that teeter -totter thing and put real sticks in. Safety-wise, I just don't know about this bird either.
