The World's Biggest Volcano Is Waking Up. What Will Happen to Us?

BRIGHT SIDE

Күн бұрын

Lava rivers rapidly flowing down the slopes, deafening noise filling the air, clouds of volcanic gas and ash covering the sky. We all used to seeing volcano eruptions in movies, and they do look spectacular. But witnessing a volcano eruption in real life, especially when it's the world's biggest volcano, will unlikely be that amazing for you. In 2021, scientists were sure Mauna Loa would wake up soon. So far, the volcano's seismicity keeps increasing and then going back to normal. But you never know when this giant will finally come back to life.

I thought Toba was the world's largest volcano? Anyway, I'm glad I sold my land on the big island last year. It sat west of the rift zone near Kilauea but southeast of Manaloa just down the hill a bit. I always had a feeling of dread the whole time I owned that property bc of what lay beneath. It's an awe-inspiring place and when you actually see the cinder cone illuminating bright red and occasional splashes of lava plus the steam vents exhaling steam, it's pretty eerie and the hairs on your arms actually stand on end. Now there are two active volcanos (and I think two more that are inactive...who knows). The big island is a very spiritual place and in fact, the first Hawaiians landed there. There is a simple plaque near the southern beach highway where the first Hawaiians stepped foot.

Taupo wasn't actually a lake when the super-eruption occurred. It became a lake after the land collapsed in on itself after the eruption (because there was no lava left to 'hold it up') and formed a caldera. Also, thankfully there were no people in NZ 26000 years ago xD ps, I'm from nz

Mauna Loa is a shield volcano that does not produce explosive eruptions. It could destroy the island but it won’t happen as an explosion.

That's not entirely true, if enough water is introduce into the system a shield volcano can erupt violently. But for the most part they do not.

Yellowstone is not going to go boom and it's not a typical volcano, it's more like a set of Lungs, pushing magma through the system. Only way this could do boom big time would be if the pressure release was blocked from several directions.

I know that Mauna Loa is a great place to put all those telescopes and other astronomical equipment, due to it's height, the clean air and being close enough to drive to from Hilo, but that still seems like a very dangerous place to put all of that expensive equipment. I see why we put so much in Chile's high dessert, as the conditions are much the same, minus the dangerous volcano under their feet. Really about time to think about putting more of that stuff safely in orbit or on the moon - the back side of the moon (as seen from earth, not the sun) would be the perfect place for radio telescopes as the moon would block out all the radio noise from the earth. Eris would be better still, but that won't be possible for a few centuries.
