'The World's fastest train'... The Cheltenham Flyer 1931

In 1931 The Cheltenham Flyer beat the existing rail speed record by covering 77.5 miles in 59.5 minutes to become the world’s fastest train.
At a time of great change in inter-war Britain, with emerging modes of travel by road and aeroplane being viable alternatives, the railways needed and saw widespread modernisation both in the systems infrastructure and the passenger experience. The Flyer (based on the ‘Castle’ class engine) offered both speed and comfort (using recently constructed carriages) giving passengers the fast and enjoyable journey they desired.
Our video offers a glimpse into this exciting time in railway history utilising archive footage and our own model Cheltenham Flyer that can be seen in the museum.

Excellent video. The story was helpfully set in context of developments in in the late 1920's/early 1930's and the model is superb. As a resident of Cheltenham and a Friend of Pendon this video was for me doubly good.

Great video, very informative and pleasant to watch. I never knew the LMS wished to purchase 50 castles, this has made me try to imagine a castle in an LMS livery.

What a lovely video. I would certainly like to see more of your motive power and rolling stock. I last visited Pendon about 10 years ago and certainly intend to go back once restrictions are lifted. Kind regards, Nick.

Fascinated to see the Tea Car in service. I remember this model being built by the late Ken Budd many years ago when he retired to live in Newquay and was a member of our Club. I recall the difficulties he had in finding visual reference to work from. Superb work then and even by today's standards!.

Extremely good and informative video, and oh gosh Roye Englands masterpiece is extraordinary. Ironic that he started it all those years ago to capture an England that was fast disappearing. The England he knew has fast disappeared as well! I have a feeling that the GW's decision regarding the sale of Castles for the LMS wasn't necessarily just a case of their ours and you can't have them nyah. Swindon at the time had extraordinary precise manufacturing and maintenance facilities and plant, which the LMS at the time didn't really possess, especially in the field as it were. As Castle efficiency and performance (and reputation) relied heavily on exacting maintenance and build there was no guarantee that the Castles would have performed as expected. If the LM had wanted to later expand their outwardly sourced Castle and make their own version of a King, would it have been successful? of course the Princess Royal class had a lot of teething issues, especially with steaming, being too heavily based upon GWR practice and the King they were based upon. Basically saying it was fairly astute that the GWR didn't loan out its drawings: look what happened in the '50's when North British built MAN engines under license. Great video, don't feel like you have to make them too short though... :)
