A life changing experience. This is the only was we can describe our day walking around Dharavi slum in Mumbai, India.
Book any hotel we stayed in while in India right here: www.davemani.com/india
Most people, us included, have preconceptions of what life in a slum must be like. But I can assure you that after spending some time there, talking to amazing people, hearing their stories, seeing them work hard, watching kids who speaks four languages getting ready to go to school and just experience the kindness and hospitality of this great community, everything changed for us.
We truly hope that this video helped you see and understand a different narrative than what is normally presented in regards to Dharavi and slums as a whole.
A massive thank you to Reality Tours & Travel who is doing some outstanding work for the community. 80% of their profits goes back to the people who needs it around India, through different programs and it is truly worth supporting.

To all my fellow Indians being hurt because they went to slum and recorded it, I would say why not? Let's stop being hypocrites and acknowledge that places like these are an integral part of India and kudos to these tourists for going to every nook and cranny and actually showing how people live in slums. I dont see anything wrong, just hardworking people doing their job and living life. Thankyou for showing it how it is❤❤

Because it becomes tiresome to hear that " this is the real India" by slum tourists and their chamchas. 75 years of the same line as if the rest of India that doesn't live in Dharavi is not real. I didn't live in slum so I am not real? Or I am not living in real India? And yes this video is not that bad but that damn " this is the real India " line was here too. I stopped the video right there and made this comment.

Dear Dave, the great part of India is that you as a foreigner can enter the poorest part of a major city and not get robbed or killed. You and your partner were safe in a slum in a far away land. Now try going to the poorest part of New York City or the poorest part of Los Angeles or the poorest part of Johannesburg or the poorest part of any major city in the world, I can guarantee that something bad would have happened to you and your partner. What you got in Dharavi was love and not death and that my dear friend is what makes India great. With love and best wishes from South Africa.

I generally don't like when people film their tours to these slum areas, it feels like poverty tourism for people who want to feel good about themselves by taking pity on them. But I really loved the way you showed it & thank you so much for that. Yes, these are poor people, but they generate their own economy, they are hardworking and aspirational. It's so easy for them to get on the wrong path, but they live their life in a dignified way. Again, thanks for showing that side.

The population of Dharavi comes together to provide the Indian economy with 1 billion US dollars and approximately 250,000 employed workers each year. The workers earn around $10 worth of wages at the most, leaving the other 40% of this community with lesser disposable income.

Slums might be doing good, might be doing bad, but why just focus on slums?? And God, these "slum guides", explaining stuff😂. Do you know there are Asiatic lions in India? All that we see , is not because they are poor; people in rural area of India make substantially less money than people in this slum, but the biggest fault is the government's inability to provide better infrastructure, sanitation and manage the population expansion.otherwise they are not that poor,if government just properly plan this place, divide it into residential, commercial, industrial area and just take care of the infrastructure, this will be a good place.

We always wish for better condition of the people. And from our perspective, infrastructure aside, these people have a better sense of community and than anywhere else we has ever seem. Just simple and genuine food people.

White privilege exists and it's evident in the way people treat you. For instance, observe how the children enthusiastically greet you while am 100% sure if a black person was walking through an Indian slum, they would be ignored or treated suspiciously. This is not a racist statement, but rather an acknowledgment that whites are often held in high esteem in countries that were previously colonized by them. You guys are doing a wonderful job and I love you 💖

Actually, a few black people have been caught in dr*g related crimes in India. And so, that is also a reason why a lot of people look at every black man with suspicion (especially when their kids are around). I know not all black people that come to India are involved in such acts; but I think, it's the same as believing all Pakistanis are terrorists (UNTIL U MEET THEM IN PERSON). Anyways, apologies... if u faced any such issues in our country! 🙏

Hey Dave, if u come back to Dharavi after 6-7 years from now, it won't be there at all ! Recently government has come up with a plan to scrap it completely and built a new modern city with huge skyscrapers!! The people living there would get free houses in it ! Just they have to shift their businesses to allotted industrial areas around mumbai ! But it's okay as 99% of the businesses ain't registered with government!
