The Coast Tram is a public transport service connecting the cities and towns along the entire Belgian (West Flanders) coast, between De Panne near the French border and Knokke-Heist. At 68 km (42 miles) in length, it is the longest tram line in the world, as well as one of the few interurban tramways in the world to remain in operation. The line is built at 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) metre gauge and fully electrified at 600 V DC.
-
The service makes 69 stops along the 68 km long line, with a tram running every ten minutes during the peak summer months (every 20 mins in the winter months), during which it is used by over 3 million passengers. The service has recently been made more accessible through the addition of low-floor centre sections to existing vehicles, and the introduction of a few new HermeLijn low-floor trams.

I love the Kusttram, it's truly unique. How many coutries have a tram that basically runs over the entire length of their coastline? Only in Belgium!

I used to go on vacation to Ostende in August until recently. I love the Belgian coast and I know very well this tram. De Haas has a very beautiful ancient station. In summer the coast is crowded and using the tram is more convenient than driving a car.

I rode this system from Knokke to Ostende in 1983. It was a nice tramline going along the coast, perfect for beach goers. There were some older cars there and the newest trams then were orange and made by BN of Belgium.

I love the coast tram, particularely the older trams (BN). For informations the first tram with the middle accessible carriage was introduced in the early 90's (I saw some 1995 footages of the coast tram and some already had the low floor middle carriage)

Nice video of our Kusttram. I don't mind publicity on vehicles too much, but I'm not a fan of vehicles with plastered windows. In spite of the promises you can look through them, I always find it hard and it gives me a headache. But that's not your fault, of course. I would have liked some more information about the locations, even if I could recognise quite some of them. I love the stations in Nieuwpoort (new) and De Haan (old).

Really sad that half the trams windows are covered over with window advertisement graphics so you can't enjoy the view of the countryside. Just don't buy from the sponsors of those graphics. There is not need to advertise by covering up windows.

Hi, actually, the advertisement 'paper' has holes in it, so if you're sitting in the tram, you can still look outside very well.
@barvdw
@barvdw 6 жыл бұрын
Look outside: yes. Look outside very well: no, not at all. As long as they don't dare to apply it on the windscreen at the driver's side, I'd say you can't see well enough. There's quite some debate on how much money this brings in as well, but I would say not enough to put your users through the agony. Every time I'm in a vehicle that's plastered, I leave with a massive headache. Especially at night, it's hard to spot where exactly you are, you often can't read the tram stop you're at. Especially disturbing when still not all vehicles are equipped with proper announcements.

See above. You can't see well through that adhesive film, no matter what the people selling those ads claim. For a means of transport that is just as much a tourist attraction that tries to sell the possibility to enjoy the dune landscape, that's unfortunate.

Tram seems to travel at a good speed. Immaculate trackwork, looks very well maintained.
@barvdw
@barvdw 6 жыл бұрын
Depends on the location, but on the big road, they can reach their maximum speed of 78 km/h. The whole trip takes about 2 hrs and 20 minutes for 67 km. One project to quicken the pace a little is a re-routing in Lombardsijde, where they will leave the village and stay on the main road around it. In spite of the difficulties with the tram in narrow streets, most locals aren't too happy with that... It's not all that well maintained, I'm afraid, salt and sand prove to be very corrosive. But every year, they do work on the line, mostly with single track operation, for which they build temporary infrastructure at the stations. Not in Summer, of course.

I agree on the lack of pride to turn trams into mobile billboards. When I ride public buses and trams I want to see out the window, while facing forward--not sideways. And despite the claims one can see through the advertisements over the windows, you don't get clear views, especially at night. A city should take pride in the presentation of public transportation.

Sounds like it's an Interurban vie a tram/trolley since it reaches and connects towns or cities together. In the US we used to have a very good Interurban system (which generally went away by WW II) that connected cities in towns. The service was very popular and widely used in Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Connecticut and other states.
@barvdw

Belgium had quite a dense network as well, of which this is one of the last vestiges. The other one is the Charleroi's 'Light Metro' which is partly a former 'vicinal', or interurban service. There are some smaller museums as well, like the one at the Caves at Han-sur-Lesse and in Thuin. The rest was closed the 50ies, mostly. Too worn out after the hard times during WWII, and the competition of the private car and the more versatile bus did the rest... There are plans to reintroduce some interurban services, though, around Brussels (Brussels-North to Willebroek via the A12 motorway, and one to the Airport) and in Limburg (Spartacus project, with a line between Hasselt and Maastricht and some others), but progress is slow, if there's progress at all. Which is too bad, they would definitely be well patronised.

The "Kusttram" is probably Europe's only surviving original interurban tram line, never been out of use, or reconstructed in another form of rail transport, or parts of closed of. They are gaining popularity back now, often built in the way of Light Rail using tramway style vehicles which are able to run on mainline railroad lines as well at higher speeds. One example I regularly use is the Metrolink in Manchester, UK. In the Manchester urban area it often runs on the streets, but outside this area it uses converted old railway lines and new built dedicated freelying track. The maximum speed is aroud 50mph. Netherlands and Germany had dense networks of tramways all over it, of which virtually none is existant anymore, other than in the way of a couple of museum lines.
@sepruecom
@sepruecom 3 жыл бұрын
@@Tom-Lahaye There are a bunch of surviving interurban lines left in Europe. In Germany you find the OEG and RHB around Mannheim/Ludwigshafen and Heidelberg. In the Ruhr Area you find a lot of interurban lines, some of them upgraded to Light Rail (Stadtbahn), others still as trams. There are two lines between Köln and Bonn. There is the Line from Halle/Saale to Merseburg and Beyond. Around Berlin there is the SRS which goes from Berlin to Schöneiche and Rüdersdorf. In Poland you find a bunch of interurbans around Katowice. In Italy there is the Limbiate Tram from Milan. In the Czech Republic you'll find the old tram from Liberec to Jablonec (and a younger one from Most to Litvinov). There are a bunch of lines around Odessa in the Ukraine. There is a line from Arad to Ghioroc in Romania, just as some newer lines in other Romanian cities. So while their numbers surely dwindled, there are still some interurban lines and networks left in Europe...
@Tom-Lahaye
@Tom-Lahaye 3 жыл бұрын
@@sepruecom There are some survivors indeed, and also newly built systems. But the majority of such lines which did exist until the 1950s and 60s are extinct. In the Netherlands none was surviving apart from some lines in Zeeland which were transformed into a museum. A couple of now existing interurban lines are newly constructed or built as extensions of urban tram lines. In Belgium the Kusttram is the only surviving one other than a museum at Thuiles and extensions of the networks of Brussels, Charleroi and Antwerps. In the UK a lot of interurban lines are been built on former railway routes with additional new track bed in places, like Manchester, Newcastle and Birmingham. Germany has examples as well where new routes have been constructed partially using old railway lines, like Karlsruhe. Eastern Europe under influence of the Soviet Union has been more kind for the existing tram routes as a good public transport system was part of the policy, car ownership was not as widespread as in the west, but now a lot of these lines are in a very rundown condition or closed as the current governments don't invest in them anymore until recently when in some places they start to see the importance of good public transport as the urban areas are fully clogged up with traffic.

Looks to me as if it comes under the heading of an LRV as opposed to a tram. With all the track looking pretty new it looks as if it has been either renewed or upgraded fairly recently. I presume the name is still used rather than change it, which would cause problems for the public who, (I presume) have known it as that for years.
@ericjamieson
@ericjamieson 5 жыл бұрын
I don't get the impression that the light rail vs. tram/streetcar distinction is as important in Europe as it is in North America. From what I've seen, if it runs at least partly in the street, has lightweight vehicles, and gets its power from a low voltage overhead wire, it's a tram. When the line is totally grade-separated, but still uses overhead current collection and light rail vehicles, like Vienna line U6, it's just considered part of the metro. There's a term "light metro" for things like the Copenhagen metro or the DLR in London, but the public doesn't seem to make much of a distinction.
@barvdw
@barvdw 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed with Eric J, there's no strict distinction made between lightrail and trams. In Dutch, the name for an LRV would be sneltram. The Kusttram definitively has some LRV characteristics, but legally, there's no difference.
@christopherlovelock9104
@christopherlovelock9104 4 жыл бұрын
@@ericjamieson I'm not sure but I think, (in the UK at least), it is called 'Light Rail' if the council concerned has received a large "government grant" - which usually means all the cost, to renew all worn out track and overhead on part or all of the system. Since the new track doesn't weigh as much per yd/metre as standard gauge railway track it is called 'light rail'. After that I presume it is up to the local council to call it what they like, although as you say I don't think the public care much and still call them trams.
@ericjamieson
@ericjamieson 4 жыл бұрын
@@christopherlovelock9104 Well in the UK the term "light railway" goes back a long way. They were often conventional steam powered lines, but with cheaper, lighter weight construction, using small engines and lightweight rolling stock. They were often narrow gauge.
@christopherlovelock9104
@christopherlovelock9104 4 жыл бұрын
@@ericjamieson Oh yes I quite agree, But most of the NG lines that carried passengers were mainly in Wales and then most carried freight for the quarry owners who built them or companies. Those in England were almost all freight, not counting the 'holiday type' lines, plus of course Col. Stephens bizarre network although they were, (I think), all Std Gauge.
