The World's Loudest Tube Combo - The Wonderful Fender Studio Bass 200W

We're playing a 1979 200W Fender Studio Bass with a Gibson Les Paul R8, a Custom Shop 69 Strat and a 1972 Fender Precision bass. It's insanely loud and maybe the firmest (yet warm) tone I've ever experienced on bass (maybe except for Ampeg B15). Close mic is a Unidyne 548 and room mic is an SM57.

Johan and a 200W amp: instant "thumb up"! Deep bass, the interior in my home vibrated when Johan played bass. I think this is the best sounding Fender amp I've heard on your channel, Johan. The sound is "big and full", not just loud.

I picked up one of these about 4 years ago - still as the original combo (lots were chopped up into a head/cab configuration) - and within a few months it became my #1 show amp. For bass. I play mostly P basses in rock bands. It’s loud, punchy, smaller than my SVT/cab set up. The Fender Studio Bass is an amazing amp and sound guys are always like “well, that’s one I’ve never seen before,” a little skeptical, and then blown away by the end of the show. Thanks for featuring it Johan!! I actually never thought to run a guitar through it!!! (I know what I’m doing later today.) Thanks for your great videos!!!

I have one I picked up years ago, way more power than I need, but I picked it up, working, for $225! It sounds incredible with guitars through the EQ section, Amazing that you can play a bass through a wonderful sounding, very loud amp, and have a guitar plugged into the other jack. Push a footswitch and change to excellent guitar tone as well. Mine is still a combo, but I don't gig, so it sits in my room, loudly and proudly. I think it is rare, and underappreciated. The black grill cloth didn't do them any favors. At a glance, at the music store, I thought mine was one of the solid state disasters!

I know they can't be in every video - but I appreciate the effort you've made to put the drums into your demos. You not only sound fantastic - but those two instruments - the guitar and drums - were made for one another. Like peanut butter and jelly. Like the white stuffing in oreo cookies. :)

This will be interesting. After watching this I gotta say, pretty impressive. Those '70s Fender amplifiers are still relatively affordable. Years ago I had a pair of EV SRO Speakers in my 1976 Fender Twin Reverb. I never measured its sound pressure level however it was almost impossible to stand in front of it when cranked. It was as loud as it was heavy!

I have a 4-12 cab in my basement. 2 EV SRO's and 2 JBL's from a Twin Reverb. It sounds very well balanced, and I don't turn the amp up too loud. It is run with the Marshall Silver Jubilee reissue 25/50, model 2555 - 100 watter. It really sounds good though. It weighs a ton as well.

According to the Fender Price List from Sept. 1979, the "21-3000 Studio Bass, 15" E.V. Speaker" cost $885. If you wanted a cover that was an additional $27. I wouldn't be surprised if this amp used the same circuit as the Super Twin Reverb, with the six 6L6 power tubes and the "harmonic balance" tone section. I will have to look for a schematic. From the same price list the "21-2901 Super Twin Reverb" cost $920 plus $18 for the cover. I bought my Super Twin Reverb in a pawn shop in April, 1993 for $400.

It was indeed based off the Super Twin…I was told by someone in the know that it’s basically a Super 5win that was tweaked to get a barter bass response..most cats that I see that have these keep them stick and try to hunt down a Super twin to split into a head because they are very similar, but aren’t as rare as the Studio Bass…

@@liamt6762 On the back of my Super Twin Reverb, it says 180 Watts, RMS, 395 Watts Peak Music Power. I don't know how these were measured, but if you were running each of six 6L6's at the maximum plate dissipation that would be 6 x 30 Watts or 180 Watts.

Not trying to take sides, cuz I have no experience with the Fender 400 PS.. I own a M/B Strategy 500 & Bass 400 (early, not +). Both are capable of Deafening SPL's, but the Strat-500 is inconceivably LOUD with the Volume knob(s) on 3. Used to gig w/mine: Triaxis preamp in front, 3 4-12's + a 1-15 blaring out ALL THE GAIN. Glorious Sonic Devastation is awesome, no matter what amp is used. Still, my $ is on the Strategy 500 for Heavyweight Champion.

The Fender 400 PS was conservatively rated at 435 watts RMS. True power output was more like 480 watts RMS. There is a hole in the chassis under the back faceplate for a 4th speaker output but I guess Fender didn't want to go that far with this amp. BTW the F400PS's output transformer DOES have a 4th output winding but only used for the NFB loop, so if Fender had decided to use the 4th speaker output, that would have made this amp over 600 watts RMS. Let's face it, some of Mesa's engineering was OK but overall Mesa amps are lacking and a TOTAL P.I.T.A. to work on. I'm familiar with the Strategy 500 and frankly, the F400PS overwhelms the Mesa, end of story. You can believe what you like. BTW Mesa amp's ratings are not true RMS they're "music power" which is a pu$$y rating to get the output number higher. The Mesa 400 doesn't put out 400 watts RMS and neither does the 400+. Sorry but Mesa puts out pu$$y amps for the fanboys to cream over, plain and simple... Lol!

@hkguitar1984

Exactly, those JBL D120s are heavy and add a lot of weight. I posted about my old Twin Reverb with EV SROs in it, total weight was almost 115 pounds. I remember tilting it back on the tilt legs and noticing that they were significantly bowing out from the weight! Even in my prime that amp was a two-man lift.
