@mandyfisher12344 жыл бұрын
Thank you Drew!! I liked you video! Also I'm not sure how did you do business in Iran, but most of the people do not carry or use cash and pay with debit cards. Taxis, underground trains, BRT buses etc all use cards. And all are domestic Iranian system. As you said no major credit cards work in Iran. You could also exchange your cash dollar with prepaid cash cards in Iran as well like gift cards. Fun fact is ALL the Iranian cash cards work with ALL the ATMs and there is no transaction fees, withdrawal fees or transfer fees. None of the banks in Iran also charge any maintenance fee no matter the amount of your balance or account activity. Banks pay between 7-10% interest on checking accounts and more on savings accounts. On the other hand there is no credit system and checks mostly work as timely payments when you want to pay late for something. They just write the future date on the check and hand it over. Iran is full of surprises if you go there! I promise you. And actually the good ones! ;-)

When I was in Iran, I was approached by a British gentleman whose father had passed on the plane and the plane had made an emergency landing in Iran for that very reason. I'm glad I resolved at least a part of his problem by explaining how our currency works.

@alizalzar5 жыл бұрын
@@psion1C The funny thing is that you all are correct. 5 Toman can refer to 5000 rial, so that means 50 Toman is 50,000 Toman which is 500,000 Rial. Also to confuse you a lil more, 5 Toman can be 5,000,000 Toman too. As Abulayi mentioned, Toman is kinda like a substitute for K (10 power of 3) yet on a bigger scale, its substitute for M too, the one with the million (10 power of 6). But it's not that confusing coz u know, when ur friend tells ya "i bought the car for 50 Toman" you know he didnt buy it for 50,000 Toman which is like about $2 at the moment ...lol. its 50 million Toman. hey, you know what? the more i explain the more i feel like you need an Iranian with you at all time. it will be easier to pay for the stuff, no one will rip you off aaaaaaaaaaaannnnnd, it will be more fun... lolol

Actually the last part is totally wrong. Iranians don't rely that much on cash. Foreigners do because foreign credit cards are not accepted by local businesses. The reason for that is Iran's political isolation and America's long-term policy of keeping Iran a pariah state. Hence companies such as Visa or Mastercard have no agreements in place with Iranian banks. Having said that, Iranians themselves heavily rely on debit cards and use them everywhere to pay for everything.

By the way, "unified travellers' check", you used both American and British English in the same sentence, make up your mind. "Travellers" is spelled "Travelers" in American English, and "Travellers" in British English. Likewise, you "Check" is spelled "Check" in American English, and "Cheque" in British English. Otherwise, your grammar is perfect. I don't mind if you use either American or British, just not both in the same sentence, please. So it should be either "unified travelers' check" in American English, or "unified travellers' cheque" in British English.

"I've handled some *REALLY HIGH INFLATED* currencies.... Like *Vietnamese DONG* "
@Dracopol4 жыл бұрын
In France after WWII, currency got inflated and in 1960 they changed 100 Old Francs into 1 New Franc (bills had NF on them). But people still thought the old way and often with an unfamiliar price you had to ask "old ones or new ones?" So if a Frenchman used a slang term and said "20.000 balles", he was talking about 200 NF. Then France helped found the E.U. and switched to Euros, which each is worth more than a US dollar currently.

@newnilamnilum6 жыл бұрын
5K means the same as 5.000. I think the more accurate would be like 100.000 and people would just say “100” to make it simple

Its not a bit confusing, if you know that "k" means thousand. The abbrevation is so popular and simple, that it is even used in video games. " I have 1k coins" There is also the more rarely used "kk", which stands for million. But as far as I know this one is only used in video games. And like already said its rare, because there is already "m" or "mil" for million.

Back in 2005 România switched from ROL to RON, and both currencies were in circulation for one year (or two?).... So they basically cut of 4 zeros from the banknotes. One dollar was 40000 ROL and changed to only 4 RON. And the confusion was started, but to make it even more difficult people were using values interchangeably and some shorthand notations as well.

When I worked at tourist destination in CA, travelers from around the world all use to hand my their USD cash or wallets to take what was needed to pay the bill as well. It was charming from my point of view. "All same color 🤷♀, haha. " I took joy and honor in serving them because I know what it's like to be in their shoes. Very considerate video clip, Drew! Merci. 🤘

we have something in morocco. the currency is dirham. but we speak most of times in rial. which is : a rial is (the amount in dirham with an extra 0) × 2. example : 50 dh is 1000 rial. in the beginning it was quite confusing to me. but now after a few years of living there it is quite normal. oh and they have something old in which 1000 frank is 10dh. which is sometimes used in market places en 1 miljoon is 10 000dh or 200 000 rial. which is used when speaking of big amounts as houses of cars...

I think people make systems for money but sometime it get to complex to fully get it, so they try to cover up or find a best way to do it, which is pretty cool but it still doesn’t change the fact on how confusing things can be in the world and that follow for outsider places around the world.

In Albania somewhere in the 90s they changed the old communist currency lek with a new one and they name it new lek witch was like the previous one but with one digit less. But albanians today even though the price is tagged with the new version the albanians are still telling the price with the previous one. My advice is that whenever you are paying money always remember to give them 1/10 of the price. P.s. this doesn't work with public services and ATM (you just give what they say)
@thelittletyrant55396 жыл бұрын
If you are confused consider that you are always paying with new lek (the tagged price) and what most people say is the tagged price multiplied by 10 (the old one) so when you buying stuff you are paying what the receipt writes and when they don't have receipt you always pay 1/10 of the price they say except for banks and public services.

They remove just one zero to make it Tuman. What's the benefit, atleast the difference should be 1000 rial = 1 Tuman. Then there'll be no need to shorten the currency name too. Don't you think?!
