Some of the world's biggest publicly-owned companies are stepping up with their quarterly report cards.
Every three months, the earnings season acts like a kind of corporate health check. It allows us to gage which sectors are growing the fastest, making the most profits and which operations are failing to make the grade or live up to the hype.
A company can make profit, but this does not necessarily mean that the company is profitable. Profit simply means revenue that remains after expenses. Net income is what really matters. It's calculated by taking revenues and subtracting the costs of doing business such as depreciation, interest and taxes.
As second quarter earnings dribble out, technology companies are now some of the world's most profitable companies.

Corporations spending profits to buy their own stock, instead of hiring and investing in the real economy. That is neoliberalism in a nutshell.

Gustav stock repurchases are a control play to recapture profits lost to shareholders.

Rogue Male the company doesn't have to care about the implications on 'all of us' as long as they are not damaging, they really have no obligation to enrich anybody elses life and create value outside the company. Those that do like google or didi are monopolies and can afford to. Those that don't are operating under the laws of perfect competition and can't afford to dwindle profits away fixing all of the worlds problems. If donations and charitable action were not tax deductible or highly publicized, they would not happen.

I don't know if this is what he actually meant, but all of you responding are missing a point. Stock repurchasing is moving capital, it's not production. It's relevant to share holders, but it produces nothing of value and employs no one. So in the long run those economic rules will enrich a select few but do nothing for the majority. Whether that is good or not is a matter of ideology but saying that huge wealth gaps don't create certain social imbalances is just naive. Also it has been a conscious effort by neoliberal economists to blur the lines between actual production, and finance gains in the FIRE sector. Banks used to lend to industries that employed people, now the by FAR biggest share of the earnings comes from overblown mortgages to inner city population, and reinvestment into speculation instruments.
