The World's Only Koala Hospital vs. Australia Bushfires

We visit the only koala hospital in the world to watch animals hurt in Australia’s bush fires get rehabilitated. Fires in Australia continue to burn and one billion animals are estimated to have died. Koalas were already a dwindling population before the fires and now they are vulnerable to extinction. Goodbye Earth environmental correspondent Gelareh Darabi shows us why.

Al Pal i dont hate against athiest but when u meet god thats the first thing he will question u about your beliefs. 'beliefs' are not helpful. We have a bible thumping prime minister who would rather pray than act. Religion is quite frankly offensive to many Australians right now. The science is quite clear, we must act to mitigate climate change right now.

Australian people: PLEASE STOP ALLOWING HOUSING DEVELOPERS TO BUILD IN KOALA HABITAT !!!! They have enough problems with dealing with drought, (which is partly caused by deforestation), fires, floods, soaring temperatures, _ which are partly caused from greenhouse gas emissions because Australia is the number one coal exporter on the planet), without people building in THEIR HOMES..!!!! They were hungry and thirsty BEFORE the fires because drought caused the Eucalyptus leaves to dry up. And the fact that the government is allowed to sell water from the Murray River to the highest bidder does not help. That should not be allowed to happen. Too many people moving into Australia. New boundaries need to be set on population control, greenhouse gases and putting the environment FIRST! Animals have a right to keep their HOMES!

These sweet gentle creatures do have souls. They feel happiness, sadness, anger, love- just like we do. Just because they can't verbalize it in our language doesn't mean they don't experience these emotions. And they feel pain. People who start these fires are sociopaths. They know it's wrong; they just don't care. They lack basic human emotions. They don't deserve to breathe another moment of air. AFAIC, they should be punished the same way they have hurt others, especially the koalas- drop them into the heart of the worst fire, with no way out. God bless the wonderful staff at Port MacQuarrie Hospital. Every last one of them is a koala saviour, and they should all receive Australia's highest honours, whatever that might be. They are all heroes and heroines. We love you, Port MacQuarrie!💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖

This disaster is heartbreaking but will be played out all around the world in different ways in the coming years. It would do well for governments and the scientific community to open their minds to the possibility that the sun is the driver of earths climate and that the planet is both getting cooler, not warmer on the planetary average and the weather / climate patterns are changing world-wide due to the approaching Grand Solar Minimum. We are in a transition phase. This needs to be seriously studied to better understand where these changes are occurring and their severity. Then we can develop mitigation strategies for agriculture, wildlife preservation and more.

@Al Pal Dry lightning does not make sense, lighting occurs with rain storms. Lightning has never caused this amount of destruction before. We do not know the extent of the arson fires. All it takes is one arson fire to devestate far more than lightning. It's not about which caused the most fires. It is about which fire had the most accelerant, how wide was the accelerant used. The arson fires are targeted and calculated which deals a much greater effect than the lightning.

Sorry as callous as this sounds this is due to fuel loads and lack of cool burning methods as the lady said the bushfires were not as intense prior to this last fire seasons. So greenies if you want to save Koala populations allow fuel load reduction burning in cooler months. This is direct result of locking up the bush. Jeff Moore

There are still more empty houses than homeless people. Plus Australians have this thing about wanting big houses with their own yards. We simply refuse better urban planning with higher density living, so that means we are constantly encroaching in native habitat.

I'm wondering if Australia couldn't start a block work to the trees to make it easier to slow and fight fires. What I mean is blocks of trees with a fire break area between blocks so that one block may burn but not necessarily all. It will make it easier to fight. Fire breaks are how California firefighters get control of fires. I'm just wondering if planting in blocks with fire breaks between would help to keep these beautiful animals alive and unburnt. I understand that it would cut down on the amount of trees but if the trees you have don't burn it will keep the areas stable and hopefully fire free. Just my idea. Not sure even how feasible it would be. But if you are replanting trees once the fires are gone it might be something to think about. It would at least give the animals a fighting chance

Renee Brown Close, but not quite. Instead of a patchwork of clearings, the bush needs a patchworks of cool burns, like the Aborigines used to do and still do in Australia;s far north. So the solution is to learn and use traditional Aboriginal burning practises: small, frequent, Lo-temperature, low-intensity fires, which reduce the fuel load, encourage less inflammable flora and allow animals, birds and insects to easily escape. This has always been practised in the Northern Territory, and needs to be re-introduced throughout Australia. Fortunately this is, very slowly, on a small scale, starting to happen. Perhaps after this apocalyptic summer, it will be adopted far more widely.

JannieofOZ Dead right, Jannie. We need to better learn how to live with nature, not to wipe it out. We have SO much to learn. But we (non-indigenous Australians) have only been here for a few generations - hardly any time at all to understand this beautiful continent.

Dry ice is carbon dioxide (CO2), rain clouds are made from water vapour (H2O). They are different gases. A large portion of wood smoke emissions is already carbon dioxide, which makes the earths temperature hotter. For one inch of rainfall over a square mile requires the same weight of water as 217 olympic swimming pools. This is why creating rainclouds from planes is unpractical. Planes can be used to put out, and contain some brushfire, but more planes means more burning gases, which contribute to the carbon dioxide problem in the first place. I wish there was a simple fix too.

Can't believe that after all the this, the Austrailian Prime Minister is still denying the need to address climate change (e.g. by reducing logging and coal mining). Instead he goes off to vacation in Maui. Clearly only thinking about the pocket book. Despite this insane bush fire season. So sad! :(

I think to get the politicians to do something they should bring the unreleasable koalas to parliament every day to make them see what they've allowed to happen to these poor animals.

🥺To anyone who has watched this video; please, please, please donate to any one of the Australian charities or wildlife organizations that are desperately trying to ensure that Australia survives this. That Australia doesn't see any of their precious unique species of wildlife disappear from the face of the planet because of the devastation caused by the 2019-20 bushfires. Every cent counts no matter how large or small your contribution may be. And please don't limit your donation to NSW charities etc. alone. Victoria & other parts of Australia including Tasmania have nowhere near the amount that will be needed to start taking proper care of our injured & displaced wildlife or those Australians who have lost everything. It will be a long time before we can rest easy again knowing that our native animals, our livestock & even our own lives are out of danger from the fires themselves, injuries caused by the fires along with starvation & loss of habitat/homes & income that is already apparent & will only worsen. This isn't something that affects Australians alone, it affects the whole world. It's an entire eco system/country thrown into chaos so don’t just talk about how bad you feel for these animals & the people affected, do something. Do anything. Help! Because Australia cannot do it alone. 🥺 And if you want to understand what is happening in Australia then watch this video from WatchMojo.com. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d6ilaMqr1peYl58.html See the links below for legitimate organizations that you can donate to: www.wildlifevictoria.org.au/ www.wires.org.au/ www.fnpw.org.au/news-and-events/fnpw-announces-wildlife-emergency-rescue-appeal www.rspcansw.org.au/bushfire-appeal/ www.zoo.org.au/fire-fund/ www.rspcavic.org/services/emergency-assistance/helping-animals-affected-by-bushfires www.salvationarmy.org.au/donate/make-a-donation/donate-online/?appeal=disasterappeal 7news.com.au/sunrise/donate-to-the-sunrise-and-salvation-army-bushfire-disaster-appeal-c-553875 www.nbcnews.com/better/lifestyle/how-help-australia-bushfire-survivors-firefighters-wildlife-ncna1111751 www.insider.com/how-to-donate-money-to-australia-bushfire-victims-and-rescuers-2020-1 On behalf of all Australians; thank you for caring enough to contribute.
