Thanks. The voltage over the capsule depends on the capsule used, and can be trimmed by changing the resistor value. I picked a resistor value I thought would be fairly safe to avoid blown capsules.

The three wire capsules open up a whole new world of possibilities. As you might know, all of these capsules can theoretically be modified to three wires, it's known as the Linkwitz mod. Thanks for the idea, I'll take that into serious consideration. My day job is keeping me from having fun with these.

Electricity and electronics are pretty simple. We want to just increase the power of our signal. We can do that with voltage increased or current or the mix of both. When we do so we also increase the noise if any. I would like to make a phantom powered preamp, compressor, limiter, gate, enhancer, fx and expander with a maximizing summing circuit. A complete Ultimate channel strip that can fit in my coat pocket. A lot of things that we buy are Grander in scale and size so it has a presence and a sort of a visual clout value materialisticly aesthetically. We could though make a selfie stick that has everything in the stick. What's cool about audio is that it's all math playing with a signal. It's not a true three dimensional process but linear. Playing with volts and amps and what it sounds when you run real world physical waves converted into electric energy signal. I like to imagine on day the way we record a physical movement, that one day we will do in reverse. Audio and frequency / volts and amps gets played with on a Terawatt worth of power. Imagine the possibilities of levitation, soil shifting, manipulation of the flow of water or just many new technologies and principles would also develop. If we multiply the processes of audio using more power and multiple amps and transducers I can only imagine what kinds of fun with wave energy and manipulation of solid and organic matter changing stat and shape. The space is my workshop in a fairly large studio room (120m2) with a high ceiling (7m). Using an old TC Finalizer for a light touch (a few dB) of real-time EQ, compression and limiting.

In vice you have to squeeze the components between the jaws, somethines quite strongly. Unless you have rubber pads, cushioning, it feels it is about to damage the stuff.

The best resistor value depends on the FET inside the capsule, so far I think all capsules I've tested worked. If you can, measure the voltage across the capsule and compare with the capsule datasheet.

Thank you. The 48V voltage phantom power) is normally provided by the audio equipment (the microphone pre-amplifier), so I'm not sure I understand your question. This simple design is specifically intended for equipment with phantom power. You can also power a capsule by a lower voltage for other devices, such as a laptop, phone or computer soundcard.

​@@NordicAudioLabs I'm stupid for asking the question. I ask again. Is an audio device safe if all three of the XLR terminals are short-circuited? Overheating or damaging parts? I'm worried that I might accidentally break the audio device.

@@StrongAI The circuit is not shorting the phantom voltage, but even doing so will not harm or overheat anything because there are two 6.8k current limiting resistors feeding pins 2 & 3 with voltage.

Simple as it is, this configuration actually provides a balanced signal, at least mostly. If you want a better balanced circuit with a lower output impedance there are many options.

The circuit needs an electret capsule with a built-in FET. It would be a fun project to try to design the simplest circuit for an LDC, maybe some day I'll have time to attempt it.

Yes, providing a grounded mesh as shield around the mic is a good idea!

If you are saying that you are getting a DC voltage difference of 9.7V between pins 2 and 3 that could be correct.

Yes, that's what it does. It does not change the output impedance so more advanced circuits can be useful in some situations.

It needs +48V to work

50Hz is mains hum. Try using a ground loop, they cheap and just work. You get the hum because different audio devices have 'different' grounds. Earth loop sorts it out.

What you probably need is shielding. Some form of metal case (could be a mesh) around the capsule, connected to ground (pin1).

Correct, there is nothing limiting the low frequency response. Many times you will have a high pass filter in your microphone pre-amp though, sometimes even variable. Instead of complicating the circuit I'd be interested in coming up with a really good DIY wind shield for these small capsules, or perhaps it's been done already?

I'm directly comparing it to the studio grade microphone I'm using for the voice-over, so it goes through the exact same processing (for KZfaq). But it's a good point to make a demo with only raw audio. Then again, the sound depends a lot on which capsule you use (see the follow up video).

And why would I want to fake anything? Wouldn't it be a bit odd since I'm manufacturing the mic I'm comparing to? :-)
