It’s great to see Sealand here! It can be seen clearly from Felixstowe and some other coastal places in England. I’m quite obsessed with it because it’s so odd 😂

They're independent as long as the actual owner of the land (in this case the UK) doesn't feel like they need the land and invade. You're not an independent nation unless you have an army to protect your claim.

@@IIXxSLAYERxXII Panama, Costa Rica, a bunch of tiny island nations. arguably Iceland too since they don't have a standing army. As long as nobody is contesting your claim to your land you absolutely don't need a military.

An artificial structure itself is not an island, under international law. Otherwise, oil drilling platforms become islands, extending land territories of many countries.

If indeed the platform is on the seabed, the water surrounding the platform can’t be that deep. Sealand could have demolished concrete building materials brought by barge to the location and an actual Island built the way China has been building islands in the Spratley Islands. It would take time and $$ but it’s certainly feasible. It can also extol its fishing rights by contract to bring in revenue (and food).

Great channel and obviously well researched. But there is no such thing as the Royal Army in Britain. The Army as a whole can trace its origins back to the first British professional Army raised by Parliament under Oliver Cromwell. Yes, Regiments and Corps have been granted the title Royal either due to their charter, which raised them stating such, or as an reward for service, but the army itself is simply the British Army. The Royal Navy and Royal Air Force are Royal because they were raised as a whole by Royal Charter.

@@JimAllen-Personaidk I feel like just because you declare yourself a nation and have nothing most people would expect from a nation, like a population and functional economy, to me it’s pretty hard to accept it as anything more than random people fucking around in English waters. There are several other regions not recognized by the UN as countries that have have larger populations and more in common with a country.
