Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel RickShielsPGAGolf. This KZfaq channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf club reviews, golf club unboxing, golf club news, golf club head to heads, and all about golf clubs.
I also want to make you play better golf by providing coaching video on all topics about golf, how to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
I will also help you lower your score by chipping better by stopping you duff and thin chips, pitch the ball closer and also create backspin. Also I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts!
On this channel I also make fun and entertaining golf content based on crazy and sometimes “gimmicky” golf clubs. I like to cut through the marketing hype about products and I like to give you the honest truth about golf equipment.
If you enjoy the channel make sure you hit subscribe and also tap the notification bell so that you are always notified when I release a new video.

Metal 3D printing is done by putting down a really thin layer of metal powder and then using a laser to melt the powder in the spots you need to be solid. This goes layer by layer upwards until the final product is done. At the end the metal powder that’s not fused gets dumped out of the part, and the part can be sent over to a machine shop to be polished as needed.
@RunnaNo1
@RunnaNo1 Ай бұрын
This is one of the reasons I think the price will fall, 3D printing metal isn’t unique to golf, and once companies outside of the major golf brands start releasing 3D printed clubs, Cobra will likely drop the price. It’s a step in the right direction, but feels like a fairly obvious step, but also one that I suspect Cobra are smart in being one of the first brands to do this.
@jasonserkowski7194
@jasonserkowski7194 Ай бұрын
@@RunnaNo1 Cobra is likely outsourcing the work to a printing company like E3D or Velo3D. There’s no reason for Cobra to purchase a single $500k machine just to have super slow production times when they could pay someone else to use 10 machines and get it done in a few weeks. The cost of metal printing has plummeted though in the last 6 years. I’d estimate that a set of irons 6 years ago would have been a $15k job. Cobra getting in first will help push other golf brands though and suppliers will start to see it as a real business venture instead of a one-off trial and prices will come down as competition increases

There is no shortcut printing geometries like this mesh. But I think in the future there might be irons having forged face, with 3d printed middle layer deposited to the back, and then welded to a cast shell.

Not sure if someone has mentioned this… but I think Rick should invite some guests to certain reviews if possible. He has space in the back where guests could sit on the cushions and they could take turns hitting and giving opinions/feedback. This is more of an extreme example because he is not in the UK, but Bryson Dechambeau could have been an amazing guest for this review. This especially because he is currently using 3D printed irons from Avoda.

Rick, if have said it before, and will do so again, Cobra is by miles ahead in club technology. This started with the F9 series snd they never looked back. I used all of the major manufacturers products over many years, but I believe that currently cobra is just next level. Unfortunately I cannot afford a set, but have a fairly new Cobra driver. Us teachers in south Africa simply cannot afford a new set. If I were you, I will put them straight in your bag. They pure strike you have the past few months will just improve more. Yeah I think that is one of the reasons it's not a mass production process yet (that and 3d printing takes a long time while casting and forging takes much less). But the fact you can get very precise on the structure is an appealing option. It's absolutely going to be more involved in the future, especially as that process evolves more

Price is a tough thing to gage with something like this, it might seem high but just the machines required to do these prints are unbelievably expensive. So by making them 3000 a set they are generating 1.5 million through those 500 sets which helps offset the costs of RnD and tooling cost so they can make a more affordable product down the line. And as a benefit they can see how they hold up in a small controlled group before committing to a large scale production

Proof of concept/prototype. If they can work the economies of scale they might be able to pull the price down. Very little input the way of human labor once they can automate the process. The big difference with 3d printing vs conventional manufacturing is it’s an additive process, not a subtractive one. So instead of trying to take out metal anywhere you can to form the ideal piece, you only have to add the pieces you actually want and or need for the object. Also with metal it tends to be just as strong or stronger than a solid piece of metal made the traditional way. It’s really cool technology.

This is going to take off. Once they figure out how to mass produce these and the price comes down you will start to see this be the way all golf clubs are made. This will also revolutionize how club fittings go. They will be able to customize loft, lie, and bounce during manufacturing. All manufacturers will be in a hurry to get on this train.

The issue with 3D printing is that it’s not easily produced at scale. It’s brilliant in prototyping and is even better at making fiddly bits to perfectly customize an item. But it’s hard to mass produce a 3D printed product. It’s cool. It’s innovative. But I’m not sure when it gets down to affordable players irons.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Cobra aren’t really making any money out of these. 3D printing is an expensive manufacturing technique cos it takes quite a bit of time for each head and the cost of the machines will be huge. I think they’ve limited it to 500 sets because even at $3000 the margins aren’t there yet. This is a proof of concept and marketing exercise at the moment.

What is the Difference between the 3D and A.I. I would think the technology would be more towards the A.I and the 3D is just printing out a club. So unless Cobra are integrating A.I technology into a 3D club then I could see huge gain.

I like when advances in technology and manufacturing make quality things cheaper, like TVs for example . Seems like golf clubs (and many other things) complicate the manufacturing process or use more exotic materials to justify a higher price. I do realize these are limited edition so anything goes.

It’s limited edition because 3D printing is a prototyping tool, not a production manufacturing technique. It would be very hard to mass produce.

Healthcare companies use 3D printing to mass produce millions of implants a year. It is a misconception that it is only for prototyping. It is expensive, but viable.
