My introduction to Australia was Melbourne, trundling around town on the trams and asking the taxi driver in from Tullamarine about hook turns. His response was that it was easier to watch people do it than attempt to explain it... :-) I've lived in Toronto, another town that has kept their streetcars all along.

Operating a variety of trams from several different places of manufacture must complicate the maintenance a bit due to needing a large inventory of parts, though not all depots necessarily service all models. The fact that all but four of the trams ever delivered are still running speaks highly for the quality of their maintenance! Here in the US, after WWII the automotive and oil industries bought up many of our urban streetcar lines and replaced them with diesel buses, a move that many of us now regret. Melbourne has a public transport system that has almost everybody within walking distance of a tram stop and uses less energy to operate. I foresee the day when your electricity will be generated from solar sources, making the trams even more cost-effective!
@peterausfranken
@peterausfranken 4 жыл бұрын
The Motors of the different trams C, D und E Class are the same and came from Siemens Alstrom. I think that a lot of the electric controls in the E Class where bulit with parts that are also coming from Siemens Alstrom. Parts bulit in Australia are the body work and the final buliding.

Some useful information here. However in your 2015 fleet coverage you made the useful point that the W class remaining were built between 1940 and 1955. Here it just seems to refer to a recent re-building program from 2013. I think I could safely say that the vast majority of people looking for W class information is the original build dates of 1940 to 1955, if that is still the case. So many people get confused about the W class and think the remaining ones are all from the 1920s. Your video, while being a very useful record, sadly missed the chance to correct this error. Would it be too cheeky of me to ask for a new video on the existing W class trams only. A video giving the build dates and more history of these historic survivors?

Those Siemens Combino trams are the worst by far. It's as though, after they were finished, they thought "Oh, we forgot about passengers! Lets squeeze a handful of seats in and they can sprawl half-lying down across the motor-housings with their legs sideways in the aisle". Then there's the huge garden shed for the driver which only the slimmest of passengers can squeeze past. They're on my line and I can hardly wait for them to be scrapped. Alas, the zeddies and B2s will probably go first, sadly.

From a drivers point of view it's probably the best low floor tram ergonomically. Passengers it's not the best and always rates low in "what is you're favourite tram" surveys. @@Schony747 Given the opportunity, Comeng or Bombadier could have provided a tram with capability for pantograph(overhead wire) or third rail power supply and could've possibly modified one of their classes for such a method of power supply. There's simply NO excuse for buying foreign-made trams when there are not one but TWO fully-equipped tram manufacturers right here in Australia.

@@neilforbes416 The third rail option was a whim of Clover Moore the Lord mayor of Sydney because she didn't want wires and poles cluttering up her city and looking untidy. Unfortunately Gladys went along with this ridiculous idea and ended up costing millions more than was necessary. We still have all the ugly poles but no wires.

@@aussiejohn5835 First of all, let's ditch this "Lord" crap. Whether it's Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Hobart, Adelaide, Newcastle, Wollongong or Woop-Woop, the term should simply be Mayor! And while we're at it, DITCH those bullshit robes and chains as well. The whole thing STINKS of Pommie aristocracy and DOES NOT fit with Australia's EGALITARIAN principles. Now to the trams. Yes, the overhead wires should be the only way to power the trams, and Sydney's Mayor, Clover Moore should like it or lump it. But Gladys Bere-JOKE-lian should've gone to Melbourne, to either or both of Comeng and Bombadier to get her state's tram fleet. Buying from overseas is a BLATANT ACT OF TREASON!
