Toycats, interesting video. I'm from Ballymena, County Antrim and most of my life have held a British passport. Last year i booked a trip to Russia but as a British citizen i was required to travel to the Russian consulate to have biometric finger prints taken. Problem for me was that this can only be done in Manchester, Edinburgh or London. Quite a costly trip from County Antrim to the British mainland. Solution was to apply for an irish passport as i was born on the island of Ireland and therefore do not need biometric prints taken now. Of course my Mum who is a diehard Unionist would scorn at the idea of me having an irish passport. Aww well its our secret lol.

I worked with a Rhodesian many years ago who had an ancestral Irish passport and a Zimbabwean passport. At some stage in the 1980s Mugabe stopped dual citizenship so the Rhodesian went to the Irish consulate who said "Not a problem sir; send Mugabe your Irish passport and come and tell us you have had it stolen and we will issue you a new Irish passport that Mugabe won't know about.

I have a Portuguese passport which is pretty powerful ... But what I really like is using my citizenship card to travel around Europe without needing a passport.

I've often wondered what the theoretical maximum amount of citizenships you can have is. Like you start with all the countries and that allow dual-citizenship, and then you combine multiple generations + birth locations to see how best you can combine them. It would be a tricky thing to work out because you'd have to consider all the differing rules between countries - for example if you can't inherit British Citizenship from a grandparent the way you're planning to do with Irish Citizenship. Some countries like the US give you citizenship for being born there, some like UK don't (unless the parents were legally resident). etc etc

My friends and I were planning on going to Iran, we're all British but have a second passport. If you go in with a British passport you have to have a guide throughout your stay. But since we have our respective, French, South Korean, Tunisian and Irish passports we can go and travel by ourselves.

I have British, Irish and US citizenships and 3 passports.

I'm Aussie and went to Chile a few years ago. At customs they had a sign off to a side desk saying "Australians and Mexicans this way". Everyone else in the world could go through no issue but us and the Mexicans had to pay $117US tax. My wife is a dual citizen with Colombia so just used her Colombian passport instead of her Aussie one. When we went to Colombia later on they had a similar thing but it was Canadians who had to pay the tax, Aussies and Mexicans were fine.

You got me thinking. My grandfather fought for Poland in WWII before moving to the US and my grandmother also was born and raised in Krakow. Irish passport means you might avoid quarantine if you swap passports on your way back to England.

Spain only allows dual passport for latin american countries, portugal and i believe is also allowed for people born in western Sahara before november 1975.

Kinda interesting seeing you suprised, where im from(brazil) pretty much everyone that has money try to have your second passport as soon as possible, some cases like mine(portuguese passaport) or italian are really easy, but some like spain,germany, polish etc takes a long time and effort, for the moral aspect i think its much easier for us beccause we are a ex-colony a lot of the people in brazil never feel the national unity that countries like portugal, Netherlands or Ireland have for example.

I think the ease and likelihood a visa application will be approved should also be factored into the overall passport value. Some senecios forcing people to get visas is just a protest but other nationalities it's almost impossible to get approved.

In Brazil, you theorectly can't have a dual citizenship, but, in practice, you can. We recently had our first (or first in a looong time) case of a person being striped off their Brazilian nationality: it was a criminal lady that was naturalized as US-American and lost her Brazilian citizenship in order to be able of being deported.

Do not just get random second citizenship, because it can lead to consequences. For example people leaving USA to live somewhere else, still have to pay US taxes, and until they are able to renounce their US citizenship, they are double-taxed. This is also a huge issue for those parents who decided to just give a US citizenship to their child, even though none of them are US citizens, since anyone born on US-soil becomes US citizen automatically. When these children earn an income, they will be double-taxed.

There's nothing "quirky" about Northern Irish people applying for citizenship in the Republic of Ireland. This has been allowed since the settlement following the Irish Civil War in 1922. Northerners have had the right to become Irish citizens for almost 100 years. The cutoff for claiming Irish citizenship through an Irish-born ancestor is your grandparents. Contrary to what the vlogger says above, it is not really possible to get Irish citizenship because you had a great-grandparent born in Ireland. The ONLY exception is, in addition to having a great-grandparent born in Ireland, that one of your parents was a bona fide citizen of Ireland on the date of your birth. That's the only way the great-grandparent thing has any value. I became an Irish citizen 20 years ago based on my grandmother's birth in Ireland. It took me a few months to get all the documentation together. After sending the application form and paperwork and fee in, I waited about 18 months for my citizenship. Once I had that, it took me 6 weeks to get my passport.

EU citizenship does help if you ever want to move or study in another EU country. You can just move there without applying for a visa or residence permit, and at least in Finland universities are tuition free for all EU citizens, not just for Finnish citizens. Not sure about UK citizens though.

Are passports typically important. I know in the US most people have never left the country. And if they have it was for tourism reasons.

I can attest to that since I migrated from a terrible passport country ( bottom 10 ) to a top 10 passport country. The difference is absolutely night and day like there's no way I could've been a digital nomad with my previous passport 😂😅.

@ibx2cat - I'm pretty sure Russian e-Visa is only for 2 places: Vladivostok and st Petersburg. Other places in Russia still need a full visa that you need to go to the embassy for.

I have 5 citizenships and its pretty handy. You can enter the country of your citizenship as a tourist, even if your passport expired. I've done it multiple times, including entering US.

But It is about knowing we have a home in Europe if the UK falls apart/gets a worse human rights record. Also, having EU citizenship is about identity. And just the knowledge you could move.

My mate, who is from Sheffield, has Northern Irish grandparents (from Belfast, from what I remember him telling me) and can register for Irish citizenship through the same way that you said. I have family from mostly Sheffield and a bunch of Derbyshire villages, but also Galway. However said family from Galway were too far back for any citizenship malarkey for me. My friend wants to go to Russia some day, it’s on his wish list of places to go, yet when I told him why doesn’t he apply for Irish citizenship to make travel to Russia easier; he promptly told me to, excuse my French, “fuck off.” I’d like to go to Russia with him, but it’s odd how different politics and beliefs can stop you from doing something you want to do (because his prompt “fuck off” was down to his grandparents being cold, hard loyalist) and he’d rather go through more trouble to go to place because of it...

The e visa are only for three areas; Kaliningrad, st Petersburg and Vladivostok. For the rest of Russia you still need a traditional Visa!
