I've also had the pleasure of touring the Sanfillippo home, about ten years ago. I found myself at a loss for words when trying to describe it to people. The collection is so unbelievable, over the top. The quality of the workmanship on all of the restorations is incredible, meticulous, perfect. Walking in the front door and seeing just the Violano Virtuoso by itself is stunning, a machine that plays two violins! And it's just the tiniest precursor of the many other wonders in store there. Words don't describe the place, and pictures barely begin to! I was in constant awe of the scale of it all. As over the top as it was when I saw it ten years ago, it looks like it has actually been expanded since then!

I've only seen Chicago from the Greyhound bus depot...spent 14 hours there not that long ago in an unscheduled layover. Not the best part of town I assume but I came out of the experience unscathed so bonus! .....An old video but sorry to hear of the loss of your brother David. Glad you got the opportunity to use his eye in this movie. A nice tribute. Besides trains, cars and girls, I love old phonographs. I would say next to the telephone, the next great invention was music available in the household. Inventions that changed the very fabric of modern civilization and society. Many don't realize how obscure music was the average person just 100 or so years ago before Edison invented recording sound. I would love to hear Rick Wakeman on that grand Wurlitzer!! Another awesome video with awesome artifacts.

Chicago. Hum.. the best of times, the worst of times. But never, ever, boring. That collection. Omg. I’m still totally blown away. And we got to meet both Jasper and his wife. He died not long after our visit. She a few years later. But they were fun. And now the place lives on.

Hi and welcome to the show! Place de la music is their house, but they do open it a couple of times a year through their nonprofit foundation. Which is how we were able to get them by throwing some money toward a steam locomotive that they were raising money for and opened their house. Look on the web for Sanfilippo foundation. And then you can find out when the next open house will be.

Be sure to check out the Netthercut / San Sylmar Collection in San Fernando, CA. They have an extremely large theatre organ, multiple orchestrians, many player grand pianos (including one that they play with an actual recording of George Gershwin), a huge hood ornament collection, a Canadian Pacific Hudson type (4-6-4) locomotive and one of the finest (if not the finest) car collections in the world.

As I watched your video, it occurred to me, for as far as we have evolved with technology, we could easily find ourselves losing track of time to be equally fascinated by this older technology now, in that penny arcade! (and Im typing this out on my smart phone technology! They would be equally fascinated!😆😃)
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 4 жыл бұрын
Indeed. But it’s fascinating to see how the technology evolved into that smart phone. These instruments use a binary memory and multiplexing. That runs on air! But the roots are right here. Did you know the fax machine is older than the telephone? They were faxing in telegraph lines. Using binary digital imaging. In the 1800’s!!
@mikediehl1468
@mikediehl1468 4 жыл бұрын
Ive gotta research that! I think somehow the messages came out onto typewriters? All mechanically keyed. For its day that would be some impressive tooling! Would that have been simple or very difficult to produce a fax then? I imagine something of a decoder on a wheel of letters of some sort of electric circuit snapping shut and opening in sequence to produce type written letters

Took 2 years!! I called, and was told only if I attached myself to one of their fundraisers. And they have about 10 per year. But most are for performing arts groups, and don't get to tour the home. BUt this one came up and they emailed us and we had to drop everything and shoot them several hundred to restore the Shay, (COOL) and we were on a plane.

Hum… looked into that one… wow. Love to se and hear that! It’s a 4/82. Wurlitzer made I think 50 different types of pipes? Sanfilippo is a 5/80. So.. 2 fewer ranks of pipes. But one more keyboard. So…. Which is bigger? Hum..

'Toy Man you have done it this time. I am, "Over the Moon-Gob-smacked" by this place. Yes, I've read about it. seen pictures, have kept-up with the Wurlitzer Theater Organ and how when parts of the "Mighty Wurlitzer:" were out for restoration it had "stand-in" digitally sampled sound from it's own pipes to cover while whole ranks were refurbished. But that pales in comparison to the vastness of the collection. When the "Bride", pictured in profile photo, gets back from church she is going to watch this episode. Cannot wait for next week. Would a "Wednesday's Fool" on this place be to much to ask? :Greg

Well the Boardwalk Hall Auditorium Organ is thought to be the worlds largest organ, no one knows how many pipes it has which is odd, but it's not a theater organ, it's an auditorium organ. Sort of it's own weird thing. That is not to say that theater organs are all in theaters, but they were intended to be, and to play music for films. They are small, but use a design to make them as flexible as much larger organs. Anyway, it's always a risk to call anything "worlds largest" but this is often said about the Sanffilippo organ, which by any definition is a theater organ for sure.
