I see what you're saying because the new mechanics are pretty involved, but I kinda dig the complexity. I feel like if you're gonna mod in fully fledged characters you might as well go wild with the mechanics, even if it's less balanced.

@@tehchives yeah after this video I actually went and downloaded downfall and you're right, stasis is effectively delayed card draw+energy production Hermit and slimbo still feel like they lack draw though

this is how people learn things, what a strange complaint... Reading the cards would slow down the process of actually watching them interact as the game progresses, which gives much more knowledge and intuition than just reading the keywords. You can see jorbs figure it out pretty well by the end of the run.

I think it is kind of hard to come up with an entirely different character without adding new mechanics and adding new mechanics means more keywords if they don't want to change the game entirely. Of course without enough playtesting, characters usually come up busted but it is the nature of modding I guess. Downfall is really fun and adds a ton of content to Sts, and since I only have a few hundred hours put into the game and still can barely beat A20H once in every 10 runs or so, I love that it is not as balanced as the main game and can get silly once you get the hang of it

@@mememaster8050 I don't necessarily disagree, I just think it feels like this guy could easily be split into 3 separate characters that heavily focus on mode switching, gems, and stasis separately that would each be way more parseable on their own.

Not way too many. I think most people were overwhelmed when playing watcher for the first time; with scry, mantra, 3 stances, pressure points.

Even Watcher doesn’t have so many A+B cards. Scry does something on its own; only a few cards key off Scry. Designing good, simple commons is hard. But it’s also the most important because players will see your commons way more than they’ll see your rares. These mod characters really also need the equivalent of Quick Slash or Flying Knee. Some commons need to be unrelated.

@@buzzerede fwiw, I do not really like Watcher all that much for the same reason :^) I think Defect does it pretty well: 3 new keywords (channel, evoke, focus) but they're all really tightly interlinked and feed off each other and contribute directly to what the Defect is "about". With watcher (and guardian) you have a ton of these keywords that are just doing their own thing without any kind of cohesion to each other. You can see this in things like Scry and Poison as well, but those are based off of very common TCG and RPG tropes respectively, so it doesn't take very long to work out. Not to be super negative here. FWIW, I think Gems and Stasis are both really cool mechanics after watching the run all the way through, but the upfront information load is a lot. My main takeaway from seeing the Guardian was wishing there was a character that really thoroughly explored the Gem+Socket mechanic with some more ways to interact with the Gem cards, or gained sockets by upgrading, etc. etc.
