The WORST CBS BROADCAST MOMENT in Green Bay Packers HISTORY | Packers @ Chiefs (1977)

During week 8 of the 1977 NFL season, in the fourth quarter of a game between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs, the Packers scored a touchdown on a kickoff return. The only problem? No one in Green Bay saw it, because the CBS broadcast by their affiliate, WBAY, was still at a commercial break. And let's just say that Packer fans were not too happy about this incredibly bad error.

Fun Fact: When the Chiefs and Packers met in the first Super Bowl CBS and NBC both broadcast the game. When the second half was ready to kick off CBS was back at the game, but NBC was still in a commercial break. As a result the kickoff was redone.

This was primarily because NBC was forced to use CBS' feed for their game broadcast, and the timing of the two networks was obviously different. Needless to say, NBC wasn't the least bit happy about this arrangement.

There was a Bears game that was being played in Houston at the same time as the Packers-Chiefs game, so maybe that's why the signal came out of Milwaukee on this occasion. Oh, and for those curious, the Bears were completely buried by the Oilers, 47-0.

After that game, the Chiefs vs Packers rivalry was 1-1-1. The Packers had won Super Bowl I and then they tied at Milwaukee County Stadium in 1973. After this game they wouldn’t play each other again for another 10 years and 16 days.

My Dad remembers watching this game back in 1977. He hated that he wasn't able to watch the TD because of the commercial debacle. It certainly sounded like a potential Supreme Court case to Packer fans according to him back then. Also, we don't actually refer to WBAY as "W Bay", it's either spelled out or we just call it Channel 2. It is nice though you shown the old titlecards they used in the 70s and 80s since WBAY is celebrating their 70th anniversary this year.

Betting it's because WITI (the Milwaukee station) had just became a CBS affiliate again several months before and was still working through their first year jitters, thus WBAY ended up having issues with the transfer overall because they were working with a completely new staff in Milwaukee rather than those at WISN (which switched to ABC, and when WBAY went to ABC itself in 1992, still had a strong bond from their CBS years in the 60s and early 70s).

I didn't know that WITI had been affiliated with anyone other than CBS back in those days. Thanks for that context. Working with a whole new set of people can royally screw up communication for a little while.

I remember in 1980’s 2 was CBS, 5 was ABC, 11 was NBC, and 26 was local stuff and 32 was Fox for a while then at some point I can’t remember 26 and 32 switched, then 2 became ABC and 5 become CBS, 26 only got one season as FOX to show Packers games before 11 become FOX and 26 became NBC in Green Bay Area, 26 didn’t even have its first newscast until summer Olympics in 1996, 26 is now “official Packers station” taking over from channel 5 recently….

Some fans are rabidly loyal. Take Eagles fans. Say what you want about them but they sell out their stadium no matter what. Take the infamous Snowballs at Santa game. Week 14 of a season where they won 2 games including the previous week which took them out of the OJ Simpson sweepstakes. There was a blizzard the night before. It was cold, damp and miserable. And yet it was a sellout. In some cities you can't sell out the game if the team is .500. You can throw Packers, Bears, Giants fans into this category too.
@WaltGekko

@@Rockhound6165 Since 2000 that is true about Eagles fans. I remember numerous Eagles home games being blacked out prior to the 2000 season (including the last game of the 1999 season played January 2, 2000 against the then-St. Louis Rams that was then-Rams Head Coach Dick Vermeil's return to Philly).

Having the transfer station be in Milwaukee makes sense given that the Milwaukee DMA is one of the Packers' 2 official primary DMAs, but this was some weird stuff. For those of you who don't know, the Packers' radio and preseason TV flagship stations are based in Milwaukee instead of the much smaller Green Bay DMA.

Something similar almost happened for a 2016 game between the Colts and Packers. It was a 4pm game (or 4.15) and our local CBS channel here in Indy was showing a game at 1pm which was running long (may have been Steelers and Ravens) As per NFL rules the station in Indy had to switch to our game at kickoff even though the first game wasn't over. Either our station switched over a couple seconds too late, or the game kicked off a couple seconds too early, because right in the middle of a play from the 1pm game, we see Jordan Todman at about the 17 yard line running like hell, breaking loose, and scoring a TD. Turns out, it was the opening kickoff!!

This is very similar to what happened in the CFL the exact same year (in fact a week after this) with CBC during a playoff game between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers & the BC Lions. As the game reached the 3 minute warning with the score 32-27 in favor of Winnipeg, BC had one last shot to win it & were able to win it 33-32 with a 3 minute drive from QB Jerry Tagge. However no one saw the last minute of the game because CBC was still showing commercials after Winnipeg had called a timeout with 1:05 left to play & someone in Toronto (where CBC is based) had forgotten to tell the production truck in Vancouver that was broadcasting the game to all of Canada & areas of border states such as Washington (that can get CBC) to come back from commercial. Because of this, no one in these areas got to see the ending of the game. The only way you could know what happened was if you listened to the game on the radio in either BC or Manitoba. It is easily the worst mistake that CBC ever did with the CFL during all of the years they aired the league (1952-2007)

Noticiable in this were the arrow markers on the field at Arrowhead. The Chiefs were the first team to have those dating back to when the stadium opened in 1972 and the Cowboys in 1977 became the second team to put those on the field. The NFL used them for the first time in Super Bowl XII at the end of that season (January 1978) in New Orleans and they have been on NFL fields ever since.

I remember a similar moment on a CFL telecast in Ottawa in 1987. The CBC affiliate from Pembroke, Ontario (CHRO-TV) was able to broadcast games from the 'Canadian Football Network' or CFN. It was a consortium of independent television stations with no network affiliation. In Ottawa, there was no independent television station serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec so a problem arose. At the eleventh hour, the league approved CHRO's request to broadcast CFN games. The point of my story is the 'Let's pause ten seconds for station identification.' Most stations would have a pre-recorded voiceover announcing the station while the game is still being shown. CHRO went in a different direction. An awful, abysmal direction. Apparently, CHRO, who had a facility in Ottawa, next door to a radio station, DID NOT RECORD A VOICE ONLY STATION ID!! FIVE SECONDS went by after the play-by-play announcer said 'Let's pause ten seconds' etc. Then the screen went black for three seconds before a picture of an Ottawa Rough Riders helmet appeared on the screen and whatever passed for synthesized music to open the VIDEO CLIP!!. THAT'S EIGHT SECONDS!!! Eleven seconds have no passed before the announcer (who was the Riders radio announcer) said 'You're watching CHRO, Cable 6. You're Ottawa Rough Riders football station.' That's about six more seconds give or take. SEVENTEEN SECONDS HAVE ELAPSED!! And we aren't done yet. THE VIDEO PLAYED FOR ANOTHER FIVE SECONDS!!!!! TWENTY-TWO SECONDS elapsed before football action resumed with, get ready, 'He's at the 20, the 10, the 5, TOUCHDOWN!!!' ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!? Once again, how hard would it have been if the TV station recorded a simple voiceover tape produced at the radio station NEXT DOOR!!!

How can a network miss a play? They do it all the time! How many times has a network missed a kickoff because they are showing a close-up of a coach's face? How many times has a network missed the next play because they were showing the replay of the previous play? If a Packer scores a touchdown and no one is able to see it, does it count? Yes.
