The Worst Crash in NASCAR History took place on February 23rd, 2013 at the Daytona International Speedway. The tandem style drafting made the NASCAR Nationwide Series opener extremely competitive. The accomplished field of Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth, Trevor Bayne, Sam Hornish Jr, and even Travis Pastrana wanted to win, However, the risk like Bill France Jr coined for signing up for the event is getting into a big wreck. On the final corner, Brad Keselowski and Regan Smith made contact. Sending Kyle Larson up an into the catchfence. The casualties that ensued makes it the ugliest crash in NASCAR's 75 year history.

I still nominate the Geoff Bodine incident. Not nearly the effect to spectators as is frowned apon, but if i had been alive before that crash and someone told me it was possible for a racing truck to get torn up that badly i'd of never believed them. I mean, the catchfence was just completely enveloped into a fireball and the flame licked all the way into the front row seats. I've never heard that much hopelessness in the commentators afterwards either. They really thought he was dead, and for good reason considering his arms flailing around in air and against the pavement as the truck rolled back over, and there was basically nothing above his head while he continued to get hit by packs of trucks.

The WORST NASCAR crash in history WITHOUT a doubt is Russell Phillips' fatal crash at Charlotte in the ill-fated Sportsman Division in October of 1995. Look up the grim details of that at your own risk.

Non-Fatal has to be Geoff Bodine as other's have said. Like it's not even close. Fatal wise there are a few candidates. Buren Skeen comes to mind, Russell Phillips, Gary Batson (less gore but the man cooked to death trapped between the fence and another car), and there are probably a few from the pre-Winston Cup era that are up there.

Worst crash in my opinion is Geoff Bodine in the trucks at Daytona or Ricky Craven at Talladega

2020 was the only race I've ever watched where seeing a wreck made me physically sick, because I was certain I had just watched Ryan Newman die on live TV.

In terms of fans injured at a Nascar race, yes this is the worst by that metric. Rating the worst crash by anything else is a matter of opinion. In the Nascar/stock car world, there are other crashes, both fatal and non fatal that I'd rate as worse than this as far as optics. 1969 Don McTavish had a fatal crash at Daytona thst is probably the most visually disturbing. 2000 Geoff Bodine at Daytona in trucks. Michael Waltrip and Mike Harmon both had crashes at Bristol that were vicious. Jeff Fuller at Kentucky in an Xfinity race was a horrible impact. Bruce Jacobi had a fatal crash at Daytona in 1983 that was very brutal. I'm sure I have other examples in my head that I could pull up. These are just a few that I feel are much worse from a visual standpoint, spectator injuries withheld. Great video, always enjoy your content.

I think one of the worst crashes is Ryan Newman when he was about to win the Daytona race. Took so long to make sure he was okay. My dad saw it live and he was in disbelief for almost an hour.

I was there, saw the roof of the car as it was blowing over through all the smoke, and watched a tire hit a fan about 100 feet away from me. Bloody scene, track officials wasted no time evacuating everyone from the tri oval

i have to disagree. imo this isnt even the worst non fatal crash but the worst crash has to be russell phillips. it can’t get much worse than that.

That one is the most gruesome crash in NASCAR history but not the worst overall.

I’m not really affected by it , but I know some are . I don’t think it was the smartest move to show unfiltered le mans 55 footage. Also in a video where you talk about a kid dying in a crash , you call that not as bad as a crash where no one died . Both are bad , but one had a way bigger consequence

The petty crash he’s referring to wasn’t a NASCAR sanctioned event. It was a drag race, maybe NHRA? Either way, it can’t be nascar’s worst crash if nascar had nothing to do with it

In terms of visual gore, the Don MacTavish crash in 1969 is clearly the worst NASCAR crash ever.

Kinda funny how the Daytona 500 in 2000 and in 2013 were the worst in history mainly because of races before them having severe car wrecks with the catch fence. There was a pattern why those 500s were bad.

was anybody else at Volusia in February 2017 when the outlaw car flipped over the fence and into the pits grandstands seriously injuring three people, it was so weird all of a sudden everything stopped. Then the cops showed up, and then a helicopter landed at the track, in the previous feature, we were seated about 30 feet from where this happened, but decided to move for a change of scenery, so we saw it happen from the other side of the track

Maybe the drivers today and Nascar itself might need to read Bill Jr's statement about risk. The cars today and the rules packages put in place for the different types of tracks have almost sanitized the competitive aspect to the point of being pointless. One of the big draws to nascar back in its heyday was the crashes. You might sit there in your indignation and say nascar isn't about that, 2 things can be true. Nobody watches nascar to watch 40 guys being nice to each other like they are driving around on the interstate

I still remember watching that moment live that day as a teenager kid just a wild finish for that 2013 nascar nationwide series race at Daytona I never expected to be bad as it was to including injuring the fans being spectators behind the fence at their seats worse than 1987 wreck

This was the day I became a Kyle Larson fan incidentally lmao it was before the wreck happened the pre race segment they did on him I was like thats my guy now because I know Jr is on his way out soon

Yeah I was a Kyle Larson fan when he was driving the 42 car I think it was for Chip Ganssi I think I spelled that right but anyone that knows racing will know who I mean

The worst has to be Don McTavish. Don never stood a chance. He was a great driver who lost his life doing what he loved. GOD BLESS Mr. McTavish.

As mentioned by other commentors, Geoff Bodine's truck crash was worse However Michael Waltrip's 1990 at the Spring Bristol Busch race is the worst crash in NASCAR history

I did not know about the guy with the head injury . NASCAR should support this man. Even if the clause on the ticket says their not responsible .

I don't think people understand how common spectators being hit by debris is. My own father was hit in the head by a hood coming off a street stock that crashed at our local track. It left him with severe brain injuries and basically a quadriplegic for the last 30 plus years. No matter how safe tracks or cars are designed it's just not possible to account for every outcome.

Maybe in terms of fans injured this one could be the worst NASCAR crash, but not the worst overall If we don't mantion fatal crashes, wrecks like Geoff Bodine at Daytona, Michael Waltrip in 1990 at Bristol and Mike Harmon's incident at the same track 12 years later are, at least for me, the worst non fatal crashes (though it could be due to how the cars ended up after the wrecks)

This is what led to the "Daytona Rising" project and the elimination of the lower level seats. Side note: Larson won 2 midget races this same week at New Smyrna In 30 degree weather

The worst one was Russell Phillips he got splattered all over the track his read rolled down pit lane in a helmet his hand was in the catchfencing his lower intestines got entangled on the hood of Ronnie Sewell's car who drove around with his intestines for 3 laps afterwards like a hood ornament and it took 17 track workers 49 minutes to pick up all of Russell's pieces with surgical gloves now *THAT* was a big-time crash also RIP.

Worst crash easily hands down has to be bobby Allison's wreck at talladega in 1987, the announcers, literally said this could've ended nascar as we know it

The worst crash I remember is when Dale Jr won @ Daytona, but when the #3 Austin Dillon went airborne over 2 rows of cars, and into the catch fence, at 200 mph, then literally hit a fence post and come to a dead stop....come back into the track, in pieces, then got nailed by Kezelowski. That car literally had nothing but the drivers cab left!!!!THAT MY FRIEND, WAS WORSE!....OH and plenty of pieces of the 3 went through the fence, into the crowd!

The worst crash will be we when someone gets turned into the inside wall in the Phoenix Raceway dogleg. That would be horrendous
