At the 1970 NFC Championship at Kezar Stadium between the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys, after the game, things got ugly in the stands. With this being the last game ever played at Kezar Stadium, everything that could've gone wrong in this send-off did, with hundreds of officers getting involved as tons of people got arrested and were sent to the hospital. This is the story behind the disaster

Also strange is that Brodie isn’t in the HOF (& Montana,Young & YA Tittle are),given that the Niners were basically mediocre or middle of the road in the early/mid 60s,once John took the reins after YA was shipped off 2 the G-men……after Dick Nolan took over,John was in the middle of that 3 year stretch in which he was considered the best in the league,something that Joe or Steve couldn’t do in their primes!!!

@@joboots007 It's a travesty that Brodie isn't in the HOF. He's getting close to 90 and recovered quite well from a stroke he suffered in his 60s. He doesn't have much time more than likely. Mays left us recently. I fear one of these days it's going to be John Brodie, before he ever gets into the HOF. It seems the fact he threw 10 more interceptions than TD passes is the problem. Brodie did play on some very competitive teams that were in contention late, 1959, '60 and '61.

In 1970, my family lived in the East Bay, near Berkeley. I remember everyone was excited about a possible all Bay Area Super Bowl, but I, just a child then, was skeptical. Oakland was 8-4-2 and 6 or 7 of their victories resulted from last second heroics, usually thanks to George Blanda. Also, the 49'ers lost very badly to Detroit in the regular season and Dallas had beaten them, barely, at Detroit, so I knew beating Dallas would be difficult. Couple of other memories: The Baltimore fans pelted the Raiders with snowballs as they entered Memorial Stadium, so it wasn't just SF with fan violence. Kezar Stadium was/is actually in Golden Gate Park, meaning most available parking was a long walking distance away. OTH, it was one of the few football only stadiums in use by the NFL and it had great views of the neighborhood and not industrial buildings like other stadiums had. One other memory: The following baseball season (1971) both the SF Giants and the Oakland A's reached the league championships but neither reached the World Series. And Oakland once again lost to Baltimore.

When the Phillies played their last game at Connie Mack Stadium in 1970 it too turned into a near-riot because of the fans. This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made videos about the following: 1. An unlikely touchdown catch by Dick Witcher that got the 49ers into the playoffs two years later. 2. How the Los Angeles Raiders banned alcohol sales in 1990 after having fan fights in consecutive weeks. 3. How the Jets ended the 2009 season with consecutive wins over division champions playing their backups, which caused the NFL to go to all divisional games in the last week of the season.

The 49ers were also celebrating the 25th anniversary season in 1970, and Kezar Stadium was their original home. During the 1960s-or even earlier in his career-star quarterback John Brodie did not want anyone want standing too close to him. And that's what happened. Sometimes, prior to a game, a beer can or a bottle would fly out of the stands when Brodie came out of the tunnel and coming onto the field.

And on KZfaq we had coverage of nearly the entire broadcast but the last few moments are dodgy and sporadic. And even on the game of the week coverage I don't believe the crowd's unruly behavior was mentioned. But as you say it was certainly covered in the newspapers and other media. Thank you for the info. There is no mention of why the field at Kezar was so torn up by early November: high schools played their games there, a few of the public high schools but also Sacred Heart, Saint Ignatius and Riordan. Also, there was "club" football at USF then, and they used Kezar. In 1969, Santa Clara played St. Mary's at Kezar, a replication of the old days of the 1930s and 40s when they'd play the Little Big Game there. Anyway, there was little grass left on the field by November between the 20 yard lines because of all the games played during the football season.

Unlike some of the other multi-use stadiums of that era, Candelstick was built as a baseball only park (even though the Raiders did briefly play there). Essentially the Giants were given that plot of land when they decided they wanted to move. Why that plot was picked is a story for a baseball historian's YT channel, because it was a blunder. But It was an open stadium in the outfield. It's capacity in 1960 was not even 44,000. That didn't change until they closed it. That's why it's not a perfect circle like some of the other stadiums of the time were. Even after the move, the 49ers were always the second class citizens there. For example, they were only allowed to use one floor of the locker room (which was 2 stories) until the Giants moved in 2000.

@@mfdixon1985 Makes sense with the 44 capacity that it could easily override.the overall deficiency of Kezar. @mfdixon1985
@mfdixon1985 2 жыл бұрын
@@pullt I don't have any detailed knowledge, no. But I think the decision to move towards multi-use stadiums was just realizing that it's a lot cheaper to have one venue. The problems were, the seasons overlapped by a month (3 if you count the NFL preseason in August and the MLB playoffs in October). And more, those places just kind of suck as baseball stadiums. I am a 90s kid and have a lot of nostalgia for Candlestick Park. But it just sucked as a baseball stadium. You're not very close to the action and I don't think any team that played in those stadiums ever drew that well, unless you're talking about when they were prime contenders. Like the Reds and Pirates of the 70s. The Giants only topped 2,000,000 fans 3 times at Candlestick Park. Now, even when the team hasn't been very good, they are pushing or eclipsing 3,000,000 every year, or at least did pre-COVID.

One additional thing on Kezar Stadium is that in the original broadcast, CBS' Ray Scott noted that the lighting at the stadium wasn't very good, which seemed to suggest that might have been an issue had the NFC Championship Game gone into overtime (starting around 5:00 p.m. Eastern time)

Ah, the glory days of the Dallas Cowboys. Twenty consecutive winning seasons, the NFL record. Five Super Bowl appearances in the 1970s, the most by any team i the decade. Chuck Howley, hopefully to soon be a Pro Football Hall of Famer, winning the MVP Award after Super Bowl V. The only player from a losing team to win that honor. Bob Hayes, the only man to own an Olympic Gold Medal AND a Super Bowl Championship ring. Bob won two Gold Medals in the 1964 Summer games in Tokyo and was a member of the 1971 Cowboy team that would make it Doomsday for Miami in Super Bowl VI. How I miss those glory days.

Dallas almost didn't get there in the first place-see the JG9 video about a potential coin flip deciding the 1970 NFC wild card as stated early in this video. Rams did everyone a favor by winning the last game of the regular season against New York or maybe Fran Tarkenton and the Giants are playing in this game as New York would have won the NFC East and Dallas may have missed the playoffs altogether if that coin (or a playoff with Detroit if the coin flip is not allowed to go through; again, check the video for details) lands the wrong way.

As a Bay Area native, I have no idea how Kezar ever worked as a stadium, especially as football's popularity began to grow. The area was (and still is) essentially impossible to park in. BART didn't exist when the 49ers played there and even if it did, Kezer isn't anywhere near a BART station. And as the vid pointed out, the neighborhood definitely attracted the "hippie types." It's a stone's throw away from Haight-Ashbury and I've heard stories from old visiting players who said they got a contact high when getting off of the team bus.

Neither Qb played well especially #14 Morton of Dallas they won because of its Defense came up with T.O.'s and the running game Morton only completed like 7 passes the entire game and his ineptitude was a harbinger of his crappiness in SB5. While Roger Staubach paces the sideline as a backup.🤦‍♂️

I don't agree with you about Keysar. I am not at all a fan of the new 49ers stadium. I grew up at Candlestick but I was at this particular game you are talking about. I think the location of the stadium was great, I think the simplicity of it was great and I think it was more maintainable and cost-effective than anything else. If anything, it was not built for NFL football but for international Olympic sports and therefore maybe seems less by what you call NFL standards. I think this was a great place to be able to go and watch a game or a concert. And one more point, the rowdiness and the violence is always from the drinkers. Don't put stoners into the list and saying that the neighborhood was about hippies. It's the drunks that cause problems and this has always been the truth.

The Cowboys beat the Niners in the Playoffs two more times which made it three consecutive years. I gave up on the 49rs and didn't watch them at all until 1981 when Bill Walsh and Joe Montana led them to their first superbowl. Everytime I drive by Kezar (it's still standing) I wonder how the heck the 49rs were able to play there for so many years. At least the Haight Ashbury district isn't as funky any more. There was plenty of Parking available but not anywhere near the stadium. The locals were anti-car and would say that people should just ride their bicycles to Kezar.

Nice topic and story. But I feel like this didn't actually impact the game itself. A nomination for worst disaster could've been the 1967 NFL Championship, or the Ice Bowl (it wasn't the NFC title game, but it would be under today's setup). A much better known story was the Packers brand new electric heating coil system to keep the ground thawed failed. The field quickly froze over, leaving the game in an almost unplayable state with most players struggling throughout to maintain footing. There's still debate over what went wrong and who is responsible.
