This was very helpful.... my dad was starting his first 55 gal community tank and they recommended a cichlid, a reedfish, zebra danios, mollies, whiptail catfish, and a pleco..... fish kept disappearing and one night I caught the reedfish swallowing a danio... I immediately separated the reedfish from the tank, but the cichlid kept picking on the whiptail. I ended up doing my own research instead of going off what the local fish store said to me and have 4 more tanks now... Everyone is happy. Sadly had to rehome the reedfish because he had a vengeance towards everyone... but i learned my lesson that in this hobby, you should really research, and not let the fish stores sell you into something else.

We had an Oscar years ago. Beautiful fish with a big personality, grew to about 12 inches eating frozen brine shrimp or goldfish. Loved to get his head scratched by me or my brother and enjoyed endlessly redecorating his tank, but absolutely hated my father. If my dad made the mistake of sitting at the end of the couch close to the tank, the fish would go nuts attacking the glass and splashing water out of the tank until he moved.

In my experience, Cichlids are its own category of fish that should only be kept with others in the same category. You can have plenty of cichlid species in the same tank and they will get along, ....in the way Ciclids get along. They will claim parts of the tank for themselves and there will be a constant power struggle to defend them. Compartmentalizing the tank by building caves out of rocks and plants, at different levels is a great way to maximize the number of desirable territories. All you have to consider is, in nature how many fish would thrive in an area the size of your tank? Cichlids thus need LARGE tanks. Then you can have tens of them, and they will fight each other and chase each other, and do things that cichlids do. They will be very active, and the stress on them with be the healthy kind.

@Luculencia
@Luculencia Жыл бұрын
Nope. There are community cichlids, e.g. P. pulcher from Africa and some of the other African Riverine dwarf cichlids, South American Dwarf cichlids (Rams and Apistos). These are peaceful as long as they aren't breeding. If they are breeding a large enough tank with space for the dither fish to escape the breeding pair can normally work just fine. For some species its recommended to keep them with tough dither fish to breed so that the aggression isn't focused on the breeding partner.

When I first got into fishkeeping, I had a massive community tank that I decided to add a small school of Tiger Barbs, and they were great for the first few months, than all but one died off. I totally laughed when you said some fish don't comply with the rules. My first Convict Cichlid was a sweetheart who got along well with all the other fish that shared her tank (yes, definite female). She had angelfish, swordtail, tiger barbs, bronze cories, and a red-tailed shark as part of her 125g community. No issues at all. I didn't realize until I got another Convict YEARS later that she wasn't the "norm" for her species. The male I ended up getting was a serial killer I named Jeffrey. I ended up having to keep him by himself for the rest of his life, once I figured out what was happening to the other fish who were disappearing.

Like nick mentioned, honey gourami might be the way to go then. I've not had dwarf gouramis be aggressive, but I did just have to swap out some blue (regular) gouramis that were food aggressive. Disappointed, but it was best for them and my existing fish
@Alec2cool
@Alec2cool 2 жыл бұрын
I've kept dwarf gouramis for years and years and while I've had some that are quite peaceful, most were aggressive. However, I've found they keep this aggression amongst themselves if they are with a group of their own kind. If there are more than 2, the aggression rarely results in serious damage. When keeping them in a tank with no others of their own species, they'll find a way to vent their aggression, usually on other fish. (Though I did have one that would fight his own reflection instead, lol!)
@TonyVainosky
@TonyVainosky 2 жыл бұрын
@@Alec2cool as much as I love gouramis, they can certainly be finicky when it comes to getting peaceful ones vs aggressive ones. Sometimes it's best to watch them in the store for a bit to see if any unwanted behavior stands out to you that you think might be detrimental to your existing tank. But again, I agree. Hit or miss on getting peaceful vs aggressive in this breed

I have a 90 gallon community tank. I have regular and albino tiger barbs. A red tail shark, giant danios, rosy barbs, red serpae, red eyed tetra, two gold gourami and one 3 spot gourami. I have no aggression issues except the red tail gets a little chippy around feeding time but that's it. You have to know when to introduce your fish to the tank and make sure you keep a proper school. Also people need to understand that heavily planted tanks with plenty of hiding spots and caves also help with aggressive behavior and fin nipping. I think the problem is that people don't properly research the fish and behaviors of the fish before just throwing them in a tank. Best advice I can give is, DO YOUR RESEARCH! Understand the size the fish can grow to and understand their behaviors before you throw fish together.

In case nobody else has pointed this out yet, there's an error in your video when you start talking about angel fish. You labeled them as tiger barbs in the text overlay. Love the video, though!

I have a Reticulated Hillstream Loach in my 20 gallon long tank with 7 Black Skirt Tetras. I've heard that this Loach is chill and gets along with almost any other fish, but mine is super territorial. He chases the Tetras around there tank all day long! Just proves the point that you can never tell.

Mine is she same way! I’ve read that the males can be territorial. Mine only goes after my newer corys I just added

I have 2 angelfish in my tank with other fish and one of them is a bully. He basically picked a corner in the tank as his territory and doesn't let any other fish. The only one allowed is the other angelfish who is actually much more friendly

i wanted to go for tiger barbs, but info about them changed my mind, but went for the more peaceful type five banded false barbs got a group of 14. False Barb is an active fish with a peaceful temperament and stunning colouration. Should be kept in a shoal of 6 or more. If kept in small numbers, their fin nipping behavior can become evident. so far happy with them, but they still 1/3 of the full size and they seem not to bother other fish, i just hope they grow fast as my other fish as might become dinner if grow slower than my nyassa catfish. both full size then they be ok but not if catfish grows at a faster rate to full size but i do have a spare tank if ever need till they have fully grown

My meanest fish I had ever had was my Malawi cichlids. I was pretty new to having fish when I started many years ago, so I made the mistake to mix my Malawi with other fish and lots of beautiful akvarium plants. They eliminate all other fish and all the plants. My akvarium was a war zone. It was a huge tank, so they had lots of room and hiding places. But it was a war zone. I started with 6 malawi cichlids and at the ends I had over 2000 malawi in 7 tanks. The main 6 and 6 other stayed in the main tank. But evey time I had my hand in the tank for cleaning and redecorating, they all swam in my hand so they could be petted. I could take them out of the tank and give them a kiss and let them down in the tank again and they keep swimming in my hands. Cleaning the tank was a nightmare since they wouldn't let me work... but they were my babies. When we had visitors and guests over.... no one could se any fish in those 7 tanks. They all hided behind the rocks. As soon as our guests leave and went home... all the fish were out and act normal again.

I love my tiger barbs. I have 15 of them.I keep them with roseline sharks, 2 pea puffers, 2 small pleco species, and mystery snails (plus ramshorn and pond snails for the peas to eat). You just have to select their tank mates carefully.

Back in the day you throw fish into the tank and they best get on..🤨🤨..we took in a miss treated Oscar..the guy delivering it put it in the wrong tank and he had a great time eating everything..but over time he grow to love my dad so much he waited for my dad to feed him every evening..we had to put him in our community tank one day..we only had a few guppies mollies etc in there with a lot of plant cover..and he just never came out..we added a few more fish over time no problem..back then we had mostly pond plants in the tank ..it was very much a jungle..when we moved we had trouble keeping him in the tank because of the cat..long story..so my friend took him to the Zoo to live in the fish room there..the kids loved him because he would eat out their hand..

I'm surprised there's no Betta on that list :) I mean there are fish they do well with (eg. small tetras), although some would argue they are most happy alone. The problem is lot of fish would pick on them and I heard Betta would attack Ramirezi cichlids.

You forgot the biggest drawback to Clown Loaches - they usually carry Ich. which they aren't affected by so you have to start off with them in a tank alone and treat them with Ich. med.s, possibly more than one round, before adding them to your tank- was intending to put 3 in my 55 gal. then trade them in at a local fish store that does that - don't remember if it was cash, store credit, or a mix of both deal. Do places still do deals like that? Or is it only one-to-one private sales these days?

I have two different tanks with good-sized schools of tiger barbs in each (16 and 18 fish, respectively). I have no problem with them bullying other fish at all and there is minimal infighting. The red tailed shark in one tank chases them around at feeding time though, but that is the extent of it. I believe the trick with tiger barbs is having big schools of them.

“Community” in this context is an ecological term, not a social one. A community tank is one with two or more different species living together, as opposed to a species tank, which houses only one.

Clown Loach is an AMAZING community aquarium fish. I'v got 6 of them in my 1 Meter (3ft) 200L (52GL) tank for 9 YEARS. they grew up to 12cm (4.7inch) and stayed that size for years. they are awesome. if you put them in a 500L tank they can get bigger...

Oh no… literally bought all the worst fish for a 35 gallon community tank 🤦🏻‍♀️ my tank cycled for 3 weeks before I bought my first fish. I knew I wanted a pleco. I know, I know… but I knew I’d have time before he grew big. Next my LFS suggested peppered corys. So I bought four. Then I went to PetSmart to get a middle to top tank swimmer. Out of obsession I got a tiny tiger Oscar, knowing I’d be getting a big tank soon too. While there there were two clown loaches that looked like they were dying and I felt bad so I bought them. (Fun fact: they were sleeping). Then an albino pleco, live plants and a few mystery snails. I know what you’re thinking… that’s a lot of fish, but I have 2, 40g filters with ceramic cylinders, foam and marineland filter. I also test my water every couple days and do 25% water changes every Sunday. My Oscar is a puppy, for now. He does go after my pleco occasionally, but it’s territory. The pleco is bigger and just goes to his hiding places. At any rate… I appreciate your videos so much my next purchase is a 125g which is a HUGE jump, but it’s my fault for not doing my proper research. And I’m excited to find out my loaches will get HUGE. I love cute tiny fish, but I love vibrant beautiful large fish. Im so happy I found your channel because I was feeding my Oscar live fish (guppy) and ghost shrimp because it’s what blogs and LFS suggested. I have learned so much about what good things to feed my fish from these videos and I greatly appreciate all the knowledge

Semantic and doesn't stray terribly far from the human definition (in the context of aquarium fish), but there is also the ecological community: the interactions between populations of two or more different species occupying the same ecosystem.

A lot of people don't realize how big Angel fish can get. I have a pair in a 180 gallon tank that I kept with an orange pike, some VERY large Pacu and a few other misc. fish and those Angels were just as mean as the pike. They were a good 5-6" diameter. Great fish

I guess that fish dealers all over the world are more or less the same. Some traders will sell anything to the newbie, just to get an income - as they might do in Denmark too. One of the first things an aquarium owner should learn is to do your homework. Don’t trust anyone unless you’ll really know them. Do your homework - study the fish and avoid impulsive buyings.

I've had a school of tiger barbs with a rotating cast as they die and I get new ones for years. I've never had issues with them nipping other fish. I have them in with parrot cichlids, clown loaches, and blue gourami currently, no aggression, the loaches and barbs school together.

John, I don't know if you have kept convicts in mass, but I have found that they behave similar to African Cichlids. Two is trouble but with 20, there is almost no drama. That was my experience anyway. Small sample size given it only happened the once, but it was over several years.

Had a tiger barb years ago in hawaii that used to chase...harrass the others in a community tank. Roommate would net it and cut half its tail off. Worked for a while until the tail grew back. Rinse and repeat the cycle...barb would hide any time net in the water. Neon tetras in that tank would jostle each other too.
