For me, the NFL Monday Night game that'll live in the greatest infamy was "The Monday Night Massacre" that occurred on Nov. 16th, 1970, when the Cardinals clobbered the Cowboys 38-0 in the Cotton Bowl. It was so bad that in the 4th quarter, they showed Don Meredith in the booth who probably wanted to have Craig Morton sentenced to life in prison. When Morton threw another interception, Meredith remarked, "Well, someone was open." The Cowboys were the team that "couldn't win the big game". That 38-0 demolition prompted critics to say that the Cowboys couldn't even win the little game. But man, did they turn it around. They went on a 7-game winning streak that started with a 45-21 romp over the Redskins the next weekend. Then the defense didn't allow a touchdown for 5 consecutive games. Among them were 2 shutouts, one of them 34-0 over the Redskins. They would, though, lose Super Bowl V 16-13 to the Colts. I had been an avid Cowboys fan since 1967. I will always remember the 1970 season. Obviously, the next season is the one I'll treasure the most as that was when they won their first Super Bowl, 24-3 over Miami. Sorry about the lengthy post, but this video opened the memory bank to 2 of the most memorable seasons I had as a Cowboys fan. Geez Louise, that was 52 years ago.

This was the start of a chain of events that would lead to the Colts moving to Indy in the middle of the night in '84. Baltimore's next playoff appearance would be with the 2000 Ravens Super Bowl win.

Remember that this was just 5 years after the move from Cleveland. I'm convinced that if the team had remained in Cleveland that they would still be looking for their first Super Bowl championship. After all, Cleveland is "The Land Of Losers".

I remember these years! Besides Unitas Jones was my favorite player ! Detroit really ended Jones career! I use to live down the road from the colts training camp and witnessed that snowy night THE MAYFLOWER TRUCKS SNEAKING THE COLTS OUT OF BALTIMORE! ALTHOUGH BALTIMORE HAS THE RAVENS IT IS STILL A TOUGH PILL TO SWALLOW SINCE ALL MY FAVORITE CHILDHOOD FOOTBALL PLAYERS WORE A COLTS HELMET!

The 2001 MNF game between the Lions and Rams was horrible. The highlight for Lions fans was when the remaining Silverdome crowd started chanting “Let’s go Red Wings” out of boredom.

Uhhhh, that was during the horrible tenure of Matt Millen and Marty Morningweg. Before that season the Lions used to be at least competitive. They were 9 and 7 the year before under Bobby Ross. That season ushered in 22 and counting years of total Lion incompetence..

When I saw 38-0 and the Cowboys involved, I thought this would be the MNF game in 1970 when the Cardinals beat the Cowboys 38-0. During the game Don Meredith, the former Cowboys QB doing color commentary alongside Howard Cosell, complained about Cosell's big words used to put down the Cowboys that night.

The worst Monday night football game of my lifetime was no doubt he Dolphins and Steelers 2007. I remember the day it came on, I was still in elementary school but I missed the majority of the game. The next day my friends told me the Steelers won 3-0 with a field goal on the last play, and I couldn't believe it. Nothing like that has even happened since.

That punt that dive bombed nose-up into the dirt and just stood there is still the funniest thing I've ever seen in a football game. My Grandpa and I almost died laughing. Only entertaining moment of that miserable game. Honestly, if this were a sane sport, that game would have been called way earlier because that field was unplayable. But that's half the fun of the NFL. It's not a sane sport, nor a sane league. So long as there's no lightning, fuck the weather/field conditions. If you can suit up and play, you're gonna play

Fun Facts: Kurt Warner’s first start for the Rams after Trent Green got injured in the preseason was against the Baltimore Ravens. Baltimore was also the opponent for the Cowboys last game in Texas Stadium in 2008.

I remember this game, but went to bed early because of school. Glad I didn't miss much--I do remember the Cowboys went down the field the first time, and Rafael Septien missed a field goal! I remembered thinking how awful he was with the Rams the previous year, and saw he hadn't changed much. Well, he did become one of the better kickers in the league. I also remember the Colts got crushed by the Dolphins the following week, 42-0, and they were being made fund of on NFL Today incessantly. Mike Kirkland has become one of those trivia questions few people will get.

The 33 points the Triangles-Colts franchise gave up in the 4th quarter of the 12-4-2022 game vs the Cowboys, I believe is the most they have ever given up in a single quarter going all the way back to 1913 when they were still in the Ohio League. Even worse than their 1928 and 1929 seasons.

The Triangles-Colts franchise spent 1 season in DFW in 1952. It would seem things worked out better for the Cowboys in the metroplex. The Triangles franchise did eventually settle in Indy, just 117 miles west of Triangle Park.

I always thought the worst MNF game was the Seahawks beating the corpse of the Eagles 42-0 in 2005 on three defensive TDs. It was called the “Monday Night Massacre” by NFL films. But this might’ve sold me. BTW you should do a video on the Seahawks scoring four defensive TDs against the Chiefs in 1984

I remember those Bert Jones years with the Baltimore Colts. Seemed like it was either the Raiders or the Steelers that sunk us in the playoffs. This Monday night game I don't remember. I think because I was in basic training at Fort Leonard Wood in MO or at training in Ft. Benjamin Harrison in IN.

The defending Super Bowl champions traditionally hosted the first "NFL Monday Night Football" game of the season until the NFL decided to begin their regular season on a Thursday night. Since then, the defending Super Bowl champs host the first NFL game of the season on that Thursday night.

You fail to mention the fact that in the final minute of the game, in a last ditch attempt to avoid the shutout, Baltimore had the ball at the Dallas 35 yard line when Kirkland hit a wide open tight end Reese McCall who caught it at the 12, broke a tackle and raced for the goal line, only to get stripped of the ball less than a yard from breaking the plane, fumbling the ball and having Dallas recover in the end zone for a touchback to preserve the shutout. A terrible game for ABC-TV, perhaps. But for those of us living in Dallas at the time who were rooting for the Cowboys, it was a very fun game to watch, and it had a perfect ending. Dallas fans were still steamed, eight years later, over Super Bowl V.

Lost in all this is the fact that as the game went on, Mr. Cosell was served a plate of this dish called "nachos" which up until that point, was a mostly regional Tex-Mex dish), and he kept on referencing them - skyrocketing their popularity, and the rest is history.

Like that you included the Tony Dorsett 91-yard touchdown where the defense was so nonexistent that Dorsett was high-fiving his teammates as he headed towards the end zone--the game was pretty much over right there, IMO...

1) The video does a good job making a blowout half-way interesting, but I think JG9 lets the Colts' defense off far too easily. In the circumstances, everybody knew the Colts offense wasn't likely to do much against Doomsday (another factor I don't think was mentioned was that Lydell Mitchell had been traded away, but his replacement - Joe Washington - hardly played in this game)...but the Colts' D was #11 in points against in '77, and 3rd overall in forcing turnovers. They knew they had to play one of their best games to give Baltimore any hope of staying close, and instead gave up 38 points and almost 600 yards to Dallas. 2) Bert Jones should have been the league MVP for most of the late '70s, not so much in terms of being the absolute best player in the league, but the Colts were like Jekyll and Hyde depending on whether he was healthy enough to play that week (or not). If Jones wasn't playing, odds are you'd have an easy time against Baltimore...but if he was, look out. From '77-'79, the Colts were 15-6 in games Jones started...and 5-20 in games he didn't.

Great video as always, but I’d argue the 2007 “Mud Bowl” between Pissburgh & Miami was the worst, with Pissburgh kicking a FG with time expiring in overtime to win 3-0. Ugh. At least watching a blowout is fun for the fans of the winning team. That Mud Bowl was a showcase of ineptitude in all phases of the game.

Poor Bert Jones. He was a great QB who wound up injured more often than he was healthy, particularly in the back half of his career. In an alternate universe, he sets a ton of passing records that Dan Marino ultimately breaks, and the Colts remain in Baltimore.

There were people that picked Miami to win the East that year. SI had them playing Dallas in the Super Bowl. Also, some people picked the Raiders go to back to the SB that year (LOL! That was a team that was getting older).

Nice job, but it's important to note that the 1977 Cowboys actually led the NFL in Total offense AND defense. The Cowboys also outscored their playoff opponents 87-23, not 86-23.

The Irsay Colts were a joke. All they had was Bert Jones, and when Bubba Baker ended Bert's career with a cheap shot in preseason, the Colts were exposed as frauds. As a Baltimore resident I'm much happier with the Ravens.

I heard that the worst Monday Night football game was in 1983 between the Giants and Cardinals in St. Louis. Both teams played horribly and the game ended in a tie.

This game was played the night before my first day of high school. I remembered Bert Jones being injured and everyone expecting the Colts to lose big. But I’d forgotten that the second stringer was also out and that the Colts had traded away Lydell Mitchell, their top rusher for each of the previous 5 seasons. That ripped the guts out of their offense, although the player they got for Mitchell. Joe Washington, was pretty damned good and led the Colts to a huge upset at 17.5-point favorite New England in a Week 3 Monday night game. (Washington didn’t play at Dallas.) I still don’t know what happened to the Colts’ defense, which hadn’t been their strong suit since the early 70s, but was positively dreadful in 1978. I do know Bob Irsay was one of the worst owners of all time.

I've seen some massive blowouts in all the times I've watched MNF, but I never heard about this one. It took place a few years before I was born. As for Mike Kirkland, I wonder why the Colts drafted him given how bad of a passer he was at Arkansas.

I was pumped up for the 1978 season because this year the league went to a 16 game schedule for the first time, so I remember this game very well, how bout them Cowboys 🔵💙

Addiing to Mr. JG9's comments, in a sort of 'Butterfly Effect', Kirkland and this game l led to a bad 1978 season, which led to the down fall of the Baltimore Colts, which led to the Baltimore Colts struggling to get a new stadium, which led to Jim Irsary moving the team to Indy

This was the start of a long tailspin that would see the Colts go 38-98-1 over a nine-year span and move to Indianapolis. Just think, if Bert Jones doesn't get injured in the 1978 preseason, maybe the Colts are still playing in Baltimore today.

Granted, Maryland Legislature had a lot blame upon themselves for calling Rosenbloom's bluff until Irsay came into the picture (trading teams with Carol) then the bluff blew up in Baltimore's face. They had a dome stadium in the works but were playing coy and it inevitably bit them in the ass as the Colts left overnight -- we all know the story. We (Baltimore) almost lost the Orioles in 1989 had Camden Yards not been approved. Bert Jones played a small role but his presence and consistency of leading that team would have led to Maryland fessing up the money to build that dome in Downtown. But... I'm basing this off assumptions and sources. I was born in '93 and couldn't care less for the Colts. Ravens & Orioles ALL DAY!

Artifical turf is like concrete. He got slammed onto his shoulder on that play... Also, Andrew Luck reminded me a lot of Jones.. Both played for the Colts and both retired much too earlier due to injuries

The Colts defense was showing cracks even in 1977 as the sack pack wasn’t performing as well. Combine that with no Bert Jones and the Colts were toast.

The problem for ABC is that Monday is a school and work night, and there’s no other live game to switch to if the Monday Night Football 2nd half is dull. On any night, they lose a lot of viewers in the eastern and central time zones by midway in the 3rd Q. On this night, even Don Meredith’s singing couldn’t keep people watching.

As a Ravens fan, I was born in '93 and have no connection with the Colts outside of the archives for being a natural-born Baltimorean. Seeing the Colts be great from the 50s-70s then falling off a cliff after Carol Rosenblum sold (or traded) the team to Irsay is heartbreaking cos we all know the inevitable fate for my beloved Baltimore's team. I imagine the Colts stay in Baltimore had Maryland not called deny Irsay's bluff and built that damn dome stadium. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Couple things. #1, the Colts were coming off of one of the best playoff games of all time, a 37-31 overtime loss to the Raiders in the now famous Ghost to the Post game. It seems they didn't recover from that loss. They started off 1978 losing 38-0 to the Cowboys in this game then the following week lost to the Dolphins 42-0 so in their first 2 weeks they were outscored 80-0. They went on to go 5-11 and wouldn't have another winning season in Baltimore again. #2, as for the Cowboys, they were coming off of their dominating Super Bowl win over Denver but 1978 would kind of be the last hurrah for the Staubach led Cowboys. They would win the NFC East and return to the Super Bowl eventually losing to the Stealers. After playing in 5 Super Bowls in the 70's, they wouldn't go to another Super Bowl until the 1992 season. Oh, and fun fact: The Cowboys once themselves were on the losing end of a 38-0 MNF loss then to my beloved Cards in 1970.

Don Merideth couldn't believe what he was watching in that MNF Cards-Cowboys game in 70. I believe that game was one of 3 straight shutouts the Cards defense had that season. Jim Hart, MacAurthur Lane, John Gilliam, Jamie Rivers, Roger Wehrli and the great Larry Wilson. With Jim Bakken kicking.

Bert jones really never came back from that injury. The two teams had played a great game in 76 won also by the cowboys.

I remember it well, and loved Every minute as a Cowboys fan! ... although it did lull the Cowboys into thinking they were that great and could sleepwalk through the season. They eventually came around finishing the season strong with eight consecutive wins going into Super Bowl XIII.

I grew up in Baltimore, and remember the local Sports press generally looked at Marchibroda as too conservative, and reluctant to be creative in exploiting the strengths of his players. So I have to wonder, in hindsight....if another coach had lost their #1 and #2 QBs, might they have tried a radical, 'why-not' game plan of options, run-pass options, mixed-in with plenty of straight-ahead low-risk fullback runs to maintain a good time-of-posession? I remember a Patriots game early in 1994, wherein Coach Parcells shocked the 49ers with an unexpected game plan that held San Francisco scoreless for the first half....all due to the Patriots' resourceful defense, Parcells' game plan of using what he had, and Bledsoe playing a good script to beat the 49ers for the first half.....until an equal genius in George Siefert adjusted and won the game in the second half. I simply wonder how a coach today would compensate or adjust for the Colt's unfortunate injury situation in this one against Dallas. Coach Marchibroda eventually was given the respect he deserved, but I wonder how a more resourceful and creative coach than him would have compensated to rally his underdog team to beat Dallas...like a Shula, Knoll, Phillips or Walsh.... ?

the '22 colt/boys fame was one of the worst on snf. noys scored that many pts. in the fourth quarter alone. and colts back then were garbage when bert jones was injured. which was alot.
