My husband died at the age of 35, 9 month after our wedding. Freak accident and I was completely unprepared for the grief. I appreciate and applaud you for talking about it. We as a society need to normalize it. It is the only thing we are guaranteed in this life-death. It’s something we ALL will experience and the more we can normalize the crazy rollercoaster ride grief is the better. I am so sorry for both of your losses. I still speak to my Mum everyday even though we lost her 2 years ago, take your time and deal with it at your own pace. People will mean well and tell you it gets better/easier etc but do things in your own time in your own way. Sometimes you want to cry 24/7 sometimes you feel absolutley empty and that’s normal. She will always be with you and talk to her out loud when your struggling it provided me comfort. Shoulders back bro, you got this ❤

I lost my dad when I was 17 years old, just before I graduated, so I understand what it's like to lose a parent. It's the worst thing that could happen. 20 years later, I still miss him.

Lost my Dad three years ago, and it was tough. My Mom has been living with us since. Life and loss are tough. Be grateful for the time we have.

I lost my Dad to pancreatic cancer in 2012. 4 months and 4 days from diagnosis to death. It was so hard to watch him waste away so quickly. My heart goes out to you, Eric. Cancer sucks!!!!!

We have come close to losing my mom a few times (breast cancer and congestive heart failure), but I cannot fathom losing her. 2023 was definitely not a good year. We lost a sister and a cousin last year. The only bright spot to 2023 was my daughter getting pregnant with my first grandchild and my mom's first great grandchild. We just found out today that she is having a boy. I hope that 2024 is a much better year for all of us.

My mom went into surgery just before Christmas, and never recovered. She died on January 3, 2011. She is greatly missed, and it gets easier, but never goes away. Cherish the memories. Prayers for you and your family, and for your mom. May she rest in peace and her memory be eternal!

I’m so sorry for your loss Eric and Alisson. Losing a family member to cancer is horrible, I suddenly lost my father to oesophageal cancer in 2019. So I’m really glad you had the time to spend with your mum knowing it was coming holding those precious moments tight in your heart and forging memories, as I have done so too despite how short it was. Life is full of ups and downs, sadness is part of the price of joy and I am greatful that you shared the sadness with us, too - as you said, it's comforting to know you're not alone within it. I am so sorry that you are in this hard place right now. My dad passed from Pancreatic Cancer in October and it's horrible and painful and unfair. I hope that both of you have more days where both of your mum's memories are more blessing than pain, and there are more friendly cats and beautiful meals and gorgeous days to lift you up when you need it.

Happy 2024 to you both. I also lost my dear dad in June 2023 after a short battle with bladder cancer and a misdiagnosis sadly. I'd just turned 40 a couple of weeks earlier, so it is particularly memorable and I'll keep his final ever birthday wishes text forever. The first Christmas without them is pretty tough. Mine was awful so I was really looking forward to January and the release from the pressure to be happy. Yes, it's coming to us all and it may be sooner than you expect. So sorry to here about Eric's mom, guys. 😢 Anja lost her dad to cancer a few years ago. I've also lost family members to cancer. This year, the day before Christmas, we lost our cat to cancer as well. I'm sure for many people, that seems like an outlandish comparison (and I'm obviously not trying to compare). I had that cat for 15 years. Through some of the best, and worst times of my life. As a traveler, we have rarely seen our friends and family...but personally seeing my little soul mate deteriorate day by day, was absolutely soul crushing. To us, she was our family. Cancer effing sucks. I often think about this kind of stuff as well. Being on the road, we're not always around for big life events. I always worry about things going terribly wrong, and not being able to make it home on time. The older we get, the more loss there is. The sad reality of getting older, I guess. Don't apologize for being real, and showing emotion. Sometimes life is sad, and sometimes it's morbid. I guess we've just got to do our best to balance out those sad parts of life, with the happy moments. I'm really glad you got to spend those last happy memories with your mother.

Y’all truly never have to apologize for being a “downer” or being emotional. For some reason 2023 was rough for so many people and a lot of losses around the holiday. I agree with Eric, grief really can feel so internal and facing your own mortality is a bit unreal. I’m sorry both of you have lost your moms, and with a hard road that led there. I almost lost my mom this year and it was terrifying. I am glad y’all have each other and other family for support. I hope 2024 is better for all of us.

I lost my mum in May, after my dad passed away September before (72 hours after being diagnosed with acute leukemia)...followed by more relatives throughout the year.
