I'm sorry but this is a flawed way of thinking. It would appear the level of ignorance seems to be with regard to their understanding of a culture foreign to them. However, I would also argue that there is a level of ignorance (or intentional blindness) on the critic's part. I rarely see people viewing the situation through the lens of the person who's made the mistake. What was the context and factors at play when they made the mistake? Was the thing they did out of the norm of the society they were in? If not, then should the conversation then be saying that said society's views are bad? However, people don't want to come out and say it like that, out of concern of coming across as being ignorant or racist themselves. Rather, it's far easier and safer to target and pile on an individual celebrity who isn't actually doing anything out-of-the-norms within their community.

I don't understand it either! Don't they watch news and all the celebrity from US getting called for 0.o. Like some Koreans even study abroad at least some of the should know it is wrong other than the artist. Hmmm, Maybe they like it because they get exposure even if it was for negative reason. The fact that they don't apologize to foreigners, but do apologize if they offended Koreans for small thing rise questions too.

Or worse, they are actively being malicious - looking for an excuse to bash idols - and/or are cowards when it comes to actually expressing their values. Notice how these complaints are generally from Westerners; with these not being treated as an issue back in Korea? Or the neighbouring countries where K-pop has a bigger audience/is more mainstream compared to the West? That's because these things are not seen as being "bad" or "unacceptable". As such, the people critics should really be angry at is Korean society as a whole (as well as possibly Asia as a whole), but those critics choose not to; instead going after the easier and safer targets of idols. Personally, at least insofar as CA is concerned, I can see both sides of the coin. Hence, I'm not as annoyed when a Korean idol emulates other cultures (because the society they live in don't see it as a de facto bad thing), compared to if a Western celebrity did. Similarly, I'd be less annoyed or angry if a Western celebrity neglected their parents (or otherwise showed a lack of filial piety), compared to if an Asian celebrity did. As such, it comes down to what's within the norms of the society the person who did it lives in and whether I can understand those values. And where don't, to call out the society as well +/- the individual in question.

I still love and support many artists, but being new to this, it’s like stepping on landmines finding out one did blackface or said/mouthed the n-word. My approach to it is just to judge it on a case by case basis. If they have a history behind doing racially/culturally insensitive things, than it’s time to jump ship. If this the first/second time and it’s something like wearing a doormat or mouthing the n-word, I’m more inclined to be forgiving.

That problem is a little different than most of these cases, but still inappropriate, because even western artist do the same. In those cases, it’s because they’ve generally have no one to voice an informed opinion on Islam, they just see it all as the same. That’s especially true in S. Korea with their tiny Islamic population, who most likely do not have a big presence in the K-Entertainment industry. It really wouldn’t hurt them to hire people and have things checked by outside sources, but that is an extra step and those controversies don’t usually hurt their core demographic. Same thing happens with Desi and Indigenous American cultures. On the other hand, as a lot of the industry takes from Black culture and many producers and talents they work for are Black, they really don’t need to work hard to find someone to check then on that. But again, other cultures and religions are very much underrepresented in the K-entertainment industry and it looks like that won’t change much any time soon.

We often talk about cultural appropriation, which is really disrespectful, but when societies across the world are increasingly secular, no one talks about religious appropriation and sacrilege. I'm a Christian with nothing but love for my Muslim brethren, and I hate when people misrespresent and misinterpret religious practices. DAY6 is my all time favorite band, but I still can't appreciate that "Oh my Jesus" is a part of the lyrics to one of their songs. But it's so normalized in society that we can't really speak up about our misgivings as religious people.

The main issue here is with idols or celebrities taking from black culture and not paying it any respect or paying homage. They put on cornrows and durags without shouting out the culture it comes from, instead treating it like a costume. On the other hand, if you are wearing another cultures clothing with a friend's blessing and using it to share the culture with others, it's coming from a good mindset and will be very welcome :)

Example being cultural dress and hairstyles. School-aged and working people are sent home, not given a job, or fired due to their appearance, in terms of clothing worn and, again, their hairstyles. A black person can wear a hairstyle synonymous to their ancestral lands and be told they are "unkept, dirty, and too mature", causing further fallout and a repeated cycle of particularly prejudicial beliefs against people in authority. So I'm just going to briefly tell you why cultural appropriation is horrible. So let's take BlackPink Lisa's recent cultural appropriation scandal thingy as a small example. So basically Lisa had something really similar to box braids in her Money music video. Now, if you didn't know, box braids originate from African- American/Black culture. Box braids have a deep history and are quite an integral part of Black culture. Lisa wore these braids without knowing about their history and without crediting the people and the culture where they originated from. So that's her appropriating a culture and not appreciating it. Like she basically only used a culture for "aesthetic purposes". Moreover, black people are always criticised/oppressed for wearing braids but when a non-black person does it, its suddenly pretty or aesthetic. This is basically why black Blinks were very angry about this. I really could go on and on about cultural appropriation in the k-pop industry but that would honestly take me too long. I'm glad that Blinks educated Lisa about this tho. Also the way Lisa actually took time to listen to the Blinks and ACTUALLY apologized was really good to see. I hope to see her change in the future. Yeah it was a decently formatted apology but was it genuine? (Rhetorical question, don't answer that) in that video she had no problems stating how "disrespectful" he was allegedly being and how the officer deserves respect SOLELY bc he was a police officer but in her apology she said it angers her how he was singled out due to being Black. Since her apology, she has also donated several times towards BLM and mentioned several times throughout the past couple of years how much she has fcked up and how much she regrets it. Of course no one has to accept her apology, but she has definitely been putting in so much energy into educating herself rather than just putting it aside and hoping one day it will be forgotten like many others seem to attempt to do.

She asked if he'd already been warned about eating on the platform and if there were signs, that's the only reason she said he deserved to be arrested. Twitter took one clip, labeled it "Amber says this man deserves to be arrested because he's black" then spread it. No one would listen to anything else and the JKNews channel took the vid down when they should have left it up so people could get the actual source material What she said was ignorant but not racist and she didn't have all the info.

@@Bom13 she didn't say she forgot racism existed, and she was watching the vid at an angle. So while what she said was ignorant and didn't take his race into consideration, it wasn't racist. Her apology wasn't great but I haven't read one that is. At least she made the effort to apologize twice and to people reaching out to her on Twitter as well as to take steps to educate herself afterward and during black lives matter. She didn't just throw out an apology and hope for the best. She took steps which is a lot more than others did.

I agree and a lot of this is old and recycled news.

Firstly there's enough blame to go around even the company and staff are at fault. Secondly, I'm pretty sure mamamoo have brains and know right from wrong so don't sit there making excuses and trying to justify their controversies. Thirdly, the artists are usually the face of the company so whatever they do will reflect badly or in a good way and much focus will not be put on the company or staff. That's why this idols need to use their brains and think before commiting to doing certain things and a bit of research goes a long way 🤷🏽‍♀️

I totally get what you mean. The difference is appropriating another persons culture versus appreciating it. Appropriation is using someone else’s culture as a costume or aesthetic and not understanding the history or meaning behind it. Cultural Appreciation is the opposite, understanding why a piece of clothing or hairstyle is important to a culture and respecting it. Black hairstyles is a complicated one because they were mocked so heavily by white people for so long. So wearing dreads or braids is just seen as disrespectful because of how they were treated for them same hairstyles in the past.

@@laravio Who decides when it is appropriation and when appreciation though? Sámi people(minority in nothern Europe) are really divided on this. Some of them say that non-sámi people should never wear anything from their culture even in private. Some of them say it is okay to wear them in private and some are okay as long as you don't modify and/or sell them forward. At the same time people making and selling the clothes and accessories are mad at the others because now they can't sell their products because people are scared of being considered racists. None of those groups care if people know the history or meaning behind the clothes. There is no winning. Whatever you do someone will get angry.
